We can recycle.  We can make more informed choices about what we wear, eat drive, clean with and so on.  We have lot's of choices.  We also have allot of control over what we do.  This does help to bring about change and understanding.

Unfortunately, we have allot of things that are not in our control especially as MCS sufferers.

Test your knowledge about this important subject take  ENN's recycling quiz.

We can do all sorts of things to help in the fight against MCS.  It is important to be environmentally conscious.  Think of the products you must use, make educated choices.  READ labels!  Become familiar with chemical names.  It is important to avoid toxic and harmful chemicals, whether you are healthy or NOT!  We must show as consumers we Do NOT want these items.  We want ECO-Friendly choices.  It's all about Supply and Demand.  Learn that you must research on behalf of yourself.  Don't automatically assume that something is safe because it is used in your food, drinks and even in the clothes you wear.  There are so many chemicals being used right now that and their safety is very questionable.   It should also be known that these chemicals are not tested properly individually and also in combination with other chemicals.

REVOLT AGAINST THE EMPIRE

WELCOME TO THE GREAT BOYCOTT

This is a boycott against the eight biggest pesticide companies in the world, but it is much more than that. It's a boycott against THE POWER and against a way of life represented by all the gigantic multinational corporations, which every day extend their control over the planet. By the time you finish reading this material you'll realize how destructive their power is, in detail. You'll understand more clearly why these simple stark things need to be done:

  1. Stop buying these corporations' products.
  2. Don't buy their stock on whatever exchanges they're traded;
  3. Demand that others including institutions sell their stock in these companies;
  4. Don't work for these corporations;
  5. Find a way to personally pass on the word.

This is definitely a PASS IT ON thing.

The eight corporations to be boycotted are:

  • Dow
  • Du Pont
  • Monsanto
  • Imperial Chemical Industries
  • Novartis
  • Rhone Poulenc
  • Bayer
  • Hoechst

A MUST DO !!!!

Look into a replay of the Bill Moyer's Special on Chemicals March 26th.  Trade Secrets. Or Possibly order a copy.

 You can NOW send letters to the President, Vice President and other Legislators on this very matter.  Click here now and get busy!

A groundbreaking investigative report on the chemical industry by Bill Moyer's is part of PBS's new programming slate, as well as a cutting-edge series on the arts around America, an in-depth look at the astonishing life of Ben Franklin, and an intimate portrait of a Protestant congregation.

Americans say corporations should have the burden of proving chemicals are safe. The majority of citizens believe most chemicals are already tested for safety, and that the government is protecting them against harmful chemicals. But what is the true story? In TRADE SECRETS: A MOYER'S REPORT, premiering Monday, March 26 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), correspondent Bill Moyer's and producer Sherry Jones uncover how our health and safety have been put at risk and why powerful forces don't want the truth to be known.

This investigative report, accompanied by a PBS.org Web site, is based on a massive archive of secret industry documents as shocking as the "tobacco papers." In the 50 years of the chemical revolution, over 75,000 chemicals have been released into the environment. What happens as our body absorbs them? And how can we protect ourselves?

Moyer's Report on the U.S. Chemical Industry Prompts Call for Congressional Hearings

A recent investigative report on the chemical industry by U.S. journalist Bill Moyer's has spurred calls from a wide range of U.S. groups for immediate congressional hearings.

The video documentary Trade Secrets, which aired March 26 on the U.S. Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), details several decades of effort on the part of the chemical industry to hide clear scientific evidence showing dangerous health effects of exposure to various chemical products. The report is based on secret documents released by the industry in response to a wrongful death lawsuit in Louisiana. The suit was brought by the wife of Dan Ross, a worker who died of a rare brain cancer after working in a vinyl chloride production plant. Click the link above to go to the PANNA (Pesticide Action Network) website and see what we can do!

As an added extra check out the Mothers and Others for a Livable Planet website.  It has a good article with references to products that contain (PVC) Polyvinyl Chloride.

Improving Your Environment and Your Health

Things you can do to help aid in healing process.

  • Create an environment in which you can heal or begin to get well.  Start specifically with the bedroom as you spend so many of your  regenerative hours there. Get ALL cotton bedding. Organic Cotton is recommended.  But some individuals cannot use Organic Cotton.  100% cotton seems to work very well for allot of the Chemically Sensitive individuals as long as it is not dyed with a deep saturated dye (stay away from dark colors.)  Usually a neutral or natural color is best. If something is white- make sure it has been dyed with hydrogen peroxide based bleach  Catalogs of Environmentally-Friendly Products  also read The Safe Shopper's Directory for building materials at HERC's site.
  • Seal off your mattress use Denny foil, heavy aluminum foil- shiny side up, layers of ALL cotton bedding.
  • Use a GOOD room or house air purifier.  We use the IQ Air Health Pro Plus and the GCX  Multigas Units and have been very happy with them. There is some smell in the new filters- so keep that in mind.  It does calm down after a while and is tolerable.  The GCX units are recommended for people with chemical sensitivities or new homes that are off-gassing.  There are lots of really good systems available.  See product listing for more sources.
  • Take out any chemicals from your home such as perfume, hairsprays, perfumed deoderant ,shave gels, soaps, household cleaners, scented candles, potpourris and scented products etc.  Dry cleaned clothing- if recently cleaned can off-gas chemicals.  Dryer sheets, laundry detergents and especially moth balls.  You can substitute these toxic choices with safe/safer alternatives.  Click here here for some really good examples listed on the EPA's website. They have lots of good information about indoor air quality.  Here is also another source of safer alternatives. Or another great site I like for healthy information/alternatives and products is Care2.com.  Go there now and check it out! Here is a link to the Healthy Home section at Care2.com.
  • Allow fresh air in your home if possible. For some of us with MCS that is an impossibility.  But if you are in a stage in your illness where you can still allow fresh air in, do so.  Indoor air quality issues are more alarming that outdoor issues. Most people only know about or are concerned about outdoor air quality, but you would be amazed at the indoor quality issues and concerns.  Quote from EPA's site "Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can damage their health but many do not know that indoor air pollution can also have significant health effects.  Environmental Protection Agency studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor levels of pollutants may be 2-5 times, and occasionally more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels.  These levels of indoor air pollutants may be of particular concern because most people spend about 90% of their time indoors  Read more here.
  • Also Read Tool's for School's- advocate for safer Indoor air quality in your child's school.- Quote from the EPA's Website:"Twenty percent of the U.S. population, nearly 55 million people, spend their days in our elementary and secondary schools.  Studies show that one-half of our nation's 115,000 schools have problems linked to indoor air quality.  Students are at greater risk because of the hours spent in school facilities and because children are especially susceptible to pollutants...Read More..."
  •
  • Get rid of carpet and drapes.  Each one of these has Formaldehyde and other nasty chemicals.  There are safer alternatives if you don't want to give up these items.   Use ALL cotton draperies.  You can by them or make your own.  Hemp carpeting and carpet padding that has been made from
  • Work on your diet and nutritional needs.   Get rid of bad habits now!  Diet is essential in dealing with any illness.  But is very important in dealing with chemical sensitivity.  Most people who are chemically sensitive have loads of food allergies.  These food allergies help to further the problem.  Food allergies help to compromise Immune System.  Candida and Leaky Gut Syndrome go hand and hand, as does Candida and chemical sensitivity.  These two items would be good to read up on.
  • Opening a window is a great way to help improve your indoor air quality.     Provided you can do this.  So many of us that are chemically sensitive cannot do this.
  • You and your child can work together with other families to implement Integrated Pest Management on your school grounds or at home. See the Your Child’s School page for information at the EPA's website.
  • Seek and buy Organic foods. This is a great statement and also wonderful for your health and well-being. Look for more information at the Organic Consumers Association's website.  A nice source for Organic fruits and Vegetables sent to you if you have no access near you is: Boxed Greens They will send you goodies right to your doorstep.  They are very good I have tried them personally.
  • Start an Organic Garden so you can have fresh vegetables and fruits whenever you like. A few nice websites with loads of information are: All Thing's Organic and Organic Gardening.com

A few things to keep in mind are:

  • The Ozone levels in your area.

  •  How close you are to a major road, freeway or polluting business.  Check some stat's here at:

  • Does your home have gas, propane or other

Ways to help your environment

  • Get an air purifier or other air cleaning device- These DO NOT reduce the pollutants.  You must take measures to reduce the toxins that are being released into your air.      See  www.airpurifiers.com

  •  To reduce indoor toxins you must begin to educate yourself about what is IN your perfumes, beauty products, cleaning chemicals,  laundry cleaning aids, furniture etc..   You must also get familiar with the clothes you buy and how they are to be cleaned.

  • Mechanical or Electrical filters may be installed into your heating/air conditioning ducts.  Your regular flat filters that you get at Home Depot or the nearest target are not enough.  They do trap large particles but do not trap the small particles efficiently.   The do not remove gaseous air pollutants and VOC's.

    You can install a Electric Filter that create an electrically charged field or ionize particles to trap them more effectively. Some use electrostatic precipitators, which are charged plates that collect the particles before they are attracted to something else in the room.

    A better choice would be a :High Efficiency Particle Arrestance (HEPA) filters, are claimed to be 99.97 percent efficient.  These are mainly used in a portable fan type unit and not in the air conditioner/heating system of your home.

    Which ever type of filtration you choose you MUST keep your filters cleaned!

    For the Chemically Sensitive you should eliminate perfumes, chemical cleaning products, unless made specifically for the Chemically Sensitive such products like:

    Read the following booklet:    This is a MUST read!
