Geospatial technologies are the umbrella term for all spatial systems gathering data on make-up, nature and surface of the planet earth. Satellites that orbit the earth are what all these technologies use. State-of-the-art atleses and maps would not be around without help from all this technology.
Satellites were made not just made for making maps and atleses. Now we use satellites for GPS to track and locate objects or even people with great accuracy, with only a few feet as the deviation.
Now, even car companies are taking advatage of this technology and are installing GPS-based navigation systems in cars. This takes the trouble away from having to read a map.
Geospatial technologies can now also be used to locate and determine new deposits of natural resources like metal, gas and oil without costly tests drillings and surveys.
Geospatial technologies also help save lives using early warning systems. These can predict deadly storms, tsunamis and floods to warn people days in advance of the disaster.
