The School was incepted as Department of Materials Science in the year 1983.
It started functioning in S B College Changanassery with 3 students for the
M. Sc. (Materials Science). Prof. M. A. Ittyachen was the founder Director of the department. Later the dept was shifted to Pulikkan's Complex, Kottayam, then to Viswamatha Auditorium, Athirampuzha, then to the remote Cheruvandoor Campus, then to the University Guest House and finally to the present beautiful building which is its own. Meanwhile it was renamed as School of Pure and Applied Physics, offering M. Sc., M. Phil, and Ph. D. courses.
