Squirrels present a special problem. They are not particularly hard to catch - once they are on the ground! Squirrels like to run in trees and along your roof and often find refuge inside your attic. They can access any hole more than 1½” in diameter (red squirrels in particular), love to store nuts and seeds in great quantities all over the garden, and make nests in trees and attics. You'll know if you have squirrels in your attic, they will make quite a racket as they run around in the daytime and early evening, dashing to and fro. To keep squirrels out of your attic, make sure that there are no trees which provide access to your roof, screen all roof vents and don't feed birds (and thus squirrels) in your yard If they have made a home of your attic and it is January or May then they are probably nesting and will have young squirrels soon. After the end of June the youngsters will also be out and about and may be humanely trapped and relocated to a nearby greenbelt. |
