My father Andrew Kotakis and I attended the 50th anniversary of the Kytherian Society of California over the weekend, and learned about your beautiful website at the celebration. Bravo!
My father's mother (Stavroula Galakatos) was from Christoforianika and emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri (U.S.) in 1917 at the age of 17.
We were very happy to see a slideshow presentation of beautiful Kythera at the 50th anniversary celebration here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and those in attendance completed detailed forms for a Kytherian Directory. It is exciting to read the entries here on the website. Thank you to the developers of this fine website for making such a special place for us to visit.

Stavros Arabatgis, born in Potamos, 1911, imigrated to the United States. Resided in Detoit Michigan. Was a chef in several large restaurants in the Detroit area. Was maried to Helen Kapsanis, 58 years of marriage. Family from Agyia Pelaghia The Kapsanis family resided in Ashtabulla Ohio area. One son John, one grandaughter Stavroula. We have lost another wonderful man that somehow is related to all of us "Tsirigotides". May God rest his soul!

I went to school in Athens as a child in 50's and lived with yiayia and papoo in mytata in the summer.
I returned to Kythera in the 60's and most recently gave a lecture on art at symposium at the University of Athens 1995.
I have not been back to Kythera since then..60's.

Thank you very much for your informative website. About 15 years ago, my wife and I were on the boat from Crete to Gythion and met a fellow traveller who said that he had been to all the Greek Islands and that Kythera was his favorite. Ever since then I have had a wish to go back. I am wondering if there are listings of houses to rent by the week or by the month. We are planning to go in the spring of 2001. No camping due to the fire at Myrtidion but great room in Daponte, great car from Panayoti, great food in Kalamos, in Kapsali with Poppy and at Magos, in Milopotamos with Caliope and at the "Calm Cafe" under the trees at Skandia. No wonder we made an album of songs about the place.

I enjoyed seeing the sites on Kythera. I visited Kythera three years ago with my family and we cannot wait to return again. The beach at Diakofti is unimaginable! My father was from Mylopotamos and my mother was from Areous. I remember visiting Kythera as a child and it has surely changed. Back then, we had no electricity, only lanters. We did not have running water, we got water from the wells. We did not have a bathroom, we went out to the field to go to the bathroom. There was only a handful of years at that time, certainly no taxis or rental cars. These things have changed but the essence of the island still remains; the beautiful beaches, villages, people.

Wonderful job on the website! Being a second-generation Greek-American, I have been doing reseach on my family's history for several years with little success (all I knew that they came to America from Smyrna just prior to the Turkish Holocost). I happened to stumble across your website a few days ago and, after e-mailing some of the site's contributors, I have discovered that my ancestors came to Smyrna in the 1800s from Kythera.
If any of you happen to be descended from the Semitecolo, Semitekolos, Simitopoulos, etc. family, please e-mail me. I would love to learn as much as possible and share all the info I have.

Our family had a large estate in Pitsinianika. Sadly, due to a lack of cooperation from the neighbors and the government, my father surrendered the property to the church. I was there as a young boy and remember an old victrola in a great big white house with records scattered over the floor. I wonder what happened to the property. It had a large olive grove and an impressive wall which bounded the property on one side. I often go to greece but have never been back to the island since '75.
