Photos above were taken during the February meeting/workshop, which was conducted by Mr. Bernie Gadd, florist extraordinaire!  Photos provided courtesty of Ms. Frances Wilson.

Bernie demonstrated some of the new 'European influence' floristry trends and explained how these are created and then adapted by integrating many facets of design in Europe.  Such trends include respresentatives from architecture, floristry, homeware manufacturing, and paint companies combining their efforts to provide European customers with a streamlined home decorating experience. We could learn a lot from this!

Bernie demostrated the latest floristry trends, including a 'beehive' styled bouquet; a 'country hedgerow' arrangment using field grasses on the exterior of the vase and a truly romantic 'fan' created from wire and then enhanced with flowers.  All of these designs were well received, extremely thought-provoking and highly imaginative.  Thank you Bernie for a great day!

OUR HISTORY

Flowers and horticulture have a fascination to women. Flowers  are a symbol of something special.  The success of the Society's Shows and social affairs have been enhanced in no small measure by the dedicated work of women.

At the June, 1943 General Meeting of The Royal Horticultural Society of NSW members were very pleased to take advantage of the supper so kindly arranged by the newly formed Ladies Auxiliary.  Such a crowd attended these meetings that supper tickets were issued at sixpence each and were availabe from the Honorary Treasurer of the Ladies Auxliary.

The Ladies Auxiliary was as busy then with Flower Arranging as they are to-day. Demonstrations of  formal and informal designs were held at the monthly meetings. The group was successful in gaining second place at a flower show held at the Anthony Horderns Department Store in Sydney; and were unfortunate to lose by one point for first place. In 1955 the Ladies Auxiliary, as usual, were responsible for the Royal Horticultural Society's Annual Ball, which was held at the Commonwealth Bank Chamber in Martin Place Sydney. Tickets were seven shillings and sixpence per person.

The change of name from Ladies Auxiliary to the Floral Art Section took place in 1958 in the hope that this change may interest men in coming along to their meetings. One of the highlights of the year was when the first display at the Royal Agricultural Society Easter Show staged a non-competitive exhibit to represent the various countries of the world. This exhibit caused so much favourable comment from the public that it became an annual event for many years. The Floral Art Section staged a display recognising the Australian Bicentennial Year at the Royal Easter Show in 1988.

In 1974 the Floral Art Section changed there meetings from nights to day time meetings, which saw an increase of members attending the day meetings.

The Floral Art Section was invited to decorate the St Andrews Church of England Cathedral, Sydney, with Floral arrangements and floral ropes.  They also decorated the Archbishop's Chair at St.Mary's Cathedral Flower Festival, which was a prelude to the Australian Bicentennary.  The Floral Art Section staged a delightful non-competitive display in the Royal Horticultural society display at the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Today, attendees to the monthly meetings of the Floral Art Groups are encouraged to 'have a go', by attending workshops, participating in the monthly show schedules for floral art categories; to learn how to become accredited judges of Floral Art; to meet other like-minded people and to generally share their love of flowers with others.  Meetings are informal, lots of fun and very informative.  Both genders are extremely welcome!

Meetings start at approx. 10am, for a cuppa and a chat.  This is then followed by a short formal meeting.  The meeting can then be followed by either Floral Art demonstrations, prepared  by members, or a guest speaker.  Audience participation is recommended!

So, why not come and spend a relaxing, yet informative morning with us?  You'd be most welcome!
