The Crystal Ball; What's up for 2003? Alright.... time to channel the Amazing Kreskin... oh, you don't know who the Amazing Kreskin is? Well, when Johnny Carson was doing 'The Tonight Show'... oh, you don't remember anyone else besides Lenno doing 'The Tonight Show.' ... lord, I feel old. Ok, never mind, here's some predicting stuff for nest year. 1. Even MORE movie toys. Bless 'Lord of the Rings' for not only resurecting the fantasy movie, but the movie tie-in for toys. Ok, ok, actually bless ToyBiz for not resting on it's laurels and putting out some amazing stuff for the movies, and making movies a nice choice for toys again, beyond just 'Star Wars.' Let's see... what goodies do we have.... 'The Matrix', BOTH movies, 'The Hulk,' 'X-Men2.' Sweeeeeeet. 2. 'The Matrix' toys!!!!!!!!!! Hey, Neo with WEAPONS this time, AND done by McFarlane Toys. That sound you hear are toy fanatics drooling at the possibilities. 3. The Return of DC Toys. Bad news, STILL no movies for DC characters. Good news; the new contract with Mattel lets DC actually make figures of their own characters!!!! FINALLY, 'Kingdom Come' figures, as well as a ton o' incredible Batman and Superman figures. Ok, ok, so I bitched about DC Direct falling from grace. Hey, here's the chance to prove me wrong. Good news, that's not all. With Mattel, we have a chance to breath some new life into some great characters, and hopefully Batman and the rest will get the treatment they deserve, beyond just being repainted and repackaged over... and over... and over... and over... and over... and over... 4. Re-issue backlash; I've seen the Micronaut re-issues. Sure, the nostalgia-factor is pretty high, but if I'm going to spend about $8 on something, IT BETTER BE SOMETHING BETTER LOOKING THAN THAT. The reason Transformers re-issues work is the product STILL LOOKS AMAZING, even compared to current pieces. However, take the Luke figure from '77 and compare it to now? Oh lord... let's be frank, the figure looks WRETCHED. Same with Micronauts. Yeah, at the time they were cool, revolutionary, blah, blah, blah. However, compared to what you can create NOW... well, aside from Baron Kaza and Force Commander, they don't look all that amazing. So please, just make NEW stuff, people. |
