With the reunion of the former Elite Four and the first matchups of Kevin and Steve, the 8th Tourney looked to be an exciting one from the starting blocks.  With a few opening melees as warm-ups, the fighting looked to become better than ever.

It really wasn't.  Kevin became the millionth person to prove the "the louder they talk, the faster they lose" theory, this time at Steve's expense.  For all the trash-talking and intimidation messages Steve sent Kevin's way, Steve put up a poor inital showing for it, getting clobbered in their first match.  Although Steve became the only person ever to end up winning the opening series, he still got smashed his first time around.

Steve wasn't the only one getting smashed, however.  J.T.'s uncanny and normally beneficial ability to alter his playing style to counteract his opponents' led him into trouble.  Normally, he could shift from opponent to opponent over the course of about 100 damage, and then enact a fitting revenge.  But now, with the onset of so many new and skilled opponents, J.T. found himself dazed and confused (and dead) trying to keep up with the wash of new styles.  The result was a series of despicable losses to the likes of Kevin, Corey, and even Caro.  He did make up the losses against Corey, but Caro didn't give him a chance for a rematch and he didn't even try to rematch Kevin in is current state.

But if the trials and tribulations of that half of the former Elite Four were bad, then there were no words to describe the trouble that Bill ran into.  In what can descibed in no other words than a fall from grace, Bill was stomped by all of his former comrades plus Kevin in informal matches, leaving his one-time allies conversing in low tones about his demise.

Regardless of anyone else's troubles, Steve found himself in a very good position.  With Bill's drop from the contention and J.T.'s little stumble, the only gaps Steve has left to worry about now is the still-increasing one between himself and Eric.  Add that to the wash of new targets for the likes of J.T. to tangle with, Steve has no other target left to pursue but Eric.
