AIR SAC MITE
The Gouldian Finch is very prone to these mites. The birds are infected by sharing food, perches etc. where they take in the eggs of this mite which have been laid by an infected bird.
SYMPTOMS
The Finch appears healthy but can be seen with open mouth breathing and a clicking sound when held to the ear.The life cycle of this mite is ca.7-21 days.
TREATMENT
There are several different solutions:-
SCATT this is used widely in the USA,Australia and is applied to the back of the neck 1-2 drops on the bare skin. This does not need to be repeated. It is recommended from the producer to repeat 3-4 times a year.Below is the link to the producer
VETAFARM
BLATTANEX STRIP this is an industrial fly strip. This used extensively in Germany. It is placed in the birdroom for several hours and then removed and placed in a sealed plastic bag. This is then repeated after 7 days to kill off the freshly hatched mites. This strip can be bought in any good DIY shop. This is what I use.
S 76 is a new treatment developed by Dr.Rob Marshall.Check out the link below
Lady Gouldian Finch
This is an American site and the S 76 treatment is describe under Health. This site also sells Gouldian and Finch Health book by Dr.Rob Marshall.
IVOMEC(Ivermectin) add .5cc of 1% injectable Ivomec to 8oz of water and make this the only water source for 24hrs also no fruit or fresh greens etc. on the day of treatment.Repeat after 10 days later if symptoms persist.
.29% FRONTLINE every 2-3 months 1 drop on preen gland(lower back just above the tail feathers).
5% SEVIN DUST 1 tablespoon into a medium sized grocery bag. Then add 1 bird and when it starts flapping the dust is automatically dispersed leave the bird in for 20-30 seconds and then remove to cage.DONOT shake the bag.
CYDECTIN this is used in Australia,it is also used for the treatment of Roundworm,Capillaria and Gizzardworm but not Tapeworm and for Scaly Face Mite.Dosage 5ml to 1 Litre of water for 5 days and repeat 21 days later. There is no stress for the birds and can be administered at any time.It is availiable from Queenlands Finch Society
E-MAIL
I have no experience of this problem but I always hang my Blattanex strip in the room where my birds are every 2 months just to make sure and it is also used when I get new birds along with the normal Mite sprays. As much as I trust breeders when picked up from there homes I always fear the worst. The same is when picked up from a bird fair.
ALWAYS FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON BOTTLE OR PACKAGE TO AVOID ANY UNDUE DEATHS.THESE TREATMENTS DONOT ALWAYS WORK AND DEATH CAN HAPPEN IF THE INFECTION IS FOUND LATE.PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN TREATMENT.
