5-Day Flinders Ranges and Arkaroola Monday 25th to Friday 29th September Monday September 25 Departing city at 7.30 am, touring through to Burra on the Barrier Highway, a hearty morning tea at Tarlee or Burra, then through the old railway towns of Hallett and Terowie to Orroroo for our lunch stop at the hotel. Explore the tree lined street and restored 1870’s buildings before we continue through the little towns of Carrieton & Craddock, the occasional deserted homestead or cottage, a stark example of where many early farmers found survival so hard without more plentiful rains. A short stop at Hawker for a look around the town and visit the Jeff Morgan Gallery to admire the stunning “Wilpena Panorama” painting and sundry other handcrafted wares in the gallery before we arrive at the world renowned Wilpena Pound Resort, our stay for the next two nights, and dinner tonight at Captain Starlight’s Restaurant. Phone 8648 0004 Tuesday September 26 After breakfast, board the 4WDrive for a half day tour with our local guide, take to the tracks in the Pound and learn much more about this fascinating and ruggedly beautiful area. There is also the opportunity of a spectacular view from the air in a flight over Wilpena. Otherwise, just relax and explore your surroundings, springtime wildflowers, native bird life and fauna, short hiking trails, and you can join a shuttle bus service with regular visits into the pound from the motel. Purchase your own lunch at the Resort, and dinner again at the motel after an adventurous day. Wednesday September 27 Majestic Mountains, tree lined gorges and stark landscapes with those special hues particular to the Flinders Ranges, all the way from Wilpena to Arkaroola. An early start today to be at Arkaroola just after lunch so that those who wish may join the exciting Ridge Top Tour, an unforgettable and breath taking experience in this unique terrain, or just enjoy a leisurely stroll around the complex before dinner tonight in the Restaurant. The evening’s highlight (optional) is the Astronomical Observatory to observe the star-studded night skies so brilliant in this idyllic setting. Phone 8648 4848 Thursday September 28 Winding our way back down the track to Blinman today, with lunch at the Wild Lime Café & Gallery, and time for a look around this old copper mining town before continuing through the winding gorge road to Parachilna and down the western side of the Flinders Ranges to turn off onto the winding Moralana Scenic Drive, the spring wildflowers should make this a stunningly beautiful journey. Dinner and overnight stay is at the Hawker Motel tonight. Phone 8648 4102 Friday September 29 Visit the historic Kanyaka homestead ruins on the way to Quorn, morning tea and time for a look around town, then down through the southern Flinders Ranges townships of Wilmington, Melrose and Wirrabara to Stone Hut for our lunch stop at the bakery. We should be arriving back in Adelaide at approximately 6.00 pm.
