Togashi Yoshihiro - Artist and Creator of Hunter X Hunter |
![]() |
Togashi Yoshihiro, the creator and artist of Hunter X Hunter, is also the creator/artist of the hit series Yu Yu Hakusho. Togashi is one of my favourite artists. He has a really weird sense of humor, and also a great imagination, it’s his imagination in Hunter X Hunter attracts me. Togashi Yoshihiro: Birth date: 1966. Birthplace: Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Hobby: Bowling. Favourite Movies: Joyu-rei, Dawn of the Dead. Place he had been: Turkey, Egypt, Spain, etc. 1986: Wins the famous Tezuka Award for manga artists. 1988: Starts of Tende Showaru Cupid 1989: Starts of Okami Nante Kowakunai! 1990: Starts of Yu Yu Hakusho 1994: Yu Yu Hakusho ends 1996: Starts of Level E 1998: Starts of Hunter X Hunter 1999: Marries Naoko Takeuchi, creator of Sailor Moon. And somewhere between 2002-2003, he had a son. Togashi started drawing when he was only in grade 1 or 2, his works were influenced by horror movies and science fictions. He is really into those scary stuffs. Togashi was on the top list of tax paying during the hit years of Yu Yu Hakusho. (you can see that from all the places he’d been to… he’s RICH!) The materials he has been using for manga drawings are drafting ink and turnip pens, and Mac for some colouring. The theme in Hunter X Hunter, which Gon is searching for his father, I think it’s related to Togash’s son. But of course he must have planned the whole story way before that, still, he might know that he is going to have a son sooner or later, so the story is actually perfect made for his son. (Except it’s rating Teen…) Togashi has this amazing ability to draw you into his manga. His thought for making manga is like “if I draw ‘good for kids’ growing and health’ manga, would you read it?” Togashi, as a shonen (youth, teen) manga artist, he doesn’t write or draw mushy friendship things. For those of you who watch YuGiOh, you’ll know that in a shonen manga, the theme is friendship/adventure, so those points must be shown. And in YuGiOh, there are a lot annoying babblings just about friendship, empty talks. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m a yugioh fan, but just those talks make me grow goose bumps.) But in Togashi’s manga, there aren’t many talks like that, but yet you can feel the theme around the manga, always, and you can really understand how a good friend can change your life. Togashi has the magic, he can make invisible things go into your brain without annoying you or notice it. Especially the part where Kurapika feels confused and emptied, there aren’t talks about it either, but the feeling is irresistible and you just go into characters with the manga gangs. But I guess that’s how his shonen mangas are so popular, it’s really guyish. Without those girls’ “sister” talk, it’s a guy’s style of showing friendship. Anyways, I still have the interview of Togashi Yoshihiro on my Shonen Jump, I’ll try to put it up on the site, later, but I already put up some important stuff that appeared in the interview. |
"That's their wedding picture when Togashi married the creator of Sailor Moon, Naoko Takeuchi, 1999." |
