scifi/Hack1/intro

/intro tries to explain just what is going on here. What's the point? And who the hell am I to write all this? Is my ego that big? The answers are, in order:

  • The point is to create a web site full of articles on how to write science fiction. This includes articles on science (what's plausible, what's stupid, etc.) and on writing (what's plot, what's dialogue, etc.). My goal is to help myself by writing out what I've been trying to learn. If I write it out, I tend to internalize it more. Oh, and helping other writers. Yes.
  • I am the stereotypical amateur science fiction author. I can call myself an author because I've been published (sort of) in Quantum Muse, Far Sector, and in the anthology Tales of the Serendip. None of these are considered "professional" publications by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, so I haven't broken out of amateur status. Which is fine by me. Don't want your crummy Nebula Awards ballot anyway. Bunch of arrogant SOB's.
  • My ego has swollen so large, it has reached the theoretical edge of the universe. It has woven itself into spacetime, and is therefore both incredibly large and unbelievably small. It's a Zen thing.

About me

Yes, yes. Me time. During the day I'm a high school administrator who tries to helps students to decide for themselves what they'd like to do with their lives. I have never recommended being a science fiction writer, because I like these kids too much. I live in Chicago with a beautiful wife (no, really) who is very supportive of my writing (no, really).

When I'm not working or writing, I play as many video games as I can afford and I brew my own beer. It's very tasty, thank you. And it's cheaper than buying imported beer, which gives me more money for video games, which gives me less time to write. Oh.

I love American football (that's because I'm American), especially fantasy football and college football. See? I like sports too. That means I'm not an ubergeek, right?

Why "scifi/Hack1?"

scifi is short for Science Fiction. If you didn't get that part, then I hope English is not your first language.

/Hack has two meanings. First, hacking is taking apart computer networks or programs to see how they work (at least that's one definition). This site hacks the literature of science fiction to see how it works, in order for some of us to write it. Second, a hack is a poor amateur who can't get it right. That's me.

The "1" is so I could get a free site on Geocities. I'm a cheap bastard.

Send me an email so I can feel important.
