ACTU accuses Austaralian Liberal Federal government of being idle on shorter work hours

Australian Council of Trade Unions secretary Greg Combet says that while France has a 35 hour week and all European countries are setting 48 hour caps on weekly work the Howard/Reith government remains idle on the issue.

The ACTU is running a test case in the Industrial Relations commission to get award guidelines to ensure work hours are ‘reasonable’.

‘Changing the long hours culture can stimulate employ-ment growth’ & reducing the pressure to work unreason -able hours is not only smart it is also fair says Combet.  For most workers longer hours is not about getting ahead, it is about keeping a job.  For further on the ACTU work-time-life campaign see getalife@actu.asn.au or www.actu.asn.au/
