"I did not lose the weight, I removed it, destroyed it, and terminated it;
not, to stumble, or trip or allow it to find me AGAIN!
This is a liberating feeling: to know that for the next few years
I can rely on wearing ONE size rather than 3 different sizes!"

DAY 1: Friday, December 06, 2002

DAY 1

Awoke to Disc 2: Deleting the "Fat" Program and Installing the "Thin" Program.  Listened to both tracks, twice.

I love the sound of the waves murmuring.  I grew up weekends on a Hawaiian shoreline and the associations were soothingly positive.

Mary Holmes'  calm voice is pleasurably listenable.  Feeling totally relaxed, I drifted right back to sleep on the first hearing.

Who is Mary Holmes?

"For more than nine years, from her clinic in Los Angeles, California, Mary Holmes has been using this method to help people from all walks of life stop smoking, fight off anxiety, help solve marital and relationship problems and lose weight." ~Source

When I did arise from bed, I felt VERY energetic and promptly did a load of laundry, straightened out the house, and had a light breakfast.

I set up this web site as a repository for this information wherever I may be -- here, at work, up in the mountains, traveling -- don't ya love the Web?

I also set up a BLOG for my Daily Eating Diary, again for easy accessibility and convenience.

Thursday, December 05, 2002

The Smart Technique kit arrived today while I was at work and on lunch break and  just as we (Cia, Malou and Em and I) were taking our "before" shots -- frontal and side.  We didn't think to take the back shots.

As I ate what may be my last Ranch Bacon Burger (a Carl's Jr. 99 cent special) with a cup of coffee, I thumbed through the pages -- totally unconscious that I was eating.

Smart Technique Kit

The packaging is attractive and slick, in a good way.  Colorful.  Inviting. Well-organized. And the "before" and "after" pictures were striking and  I showed The Mommies' incredulous and fabulous  before and after photos off to my co-workers.

Like me, they were duly impressed and Cia, Em and Malou will be listening to the introductory disc as I am done with it.  We may be doing it as a team.  Cia and Malou are novice Weight Watchers and this program may work hand-in-hand with it.

"In fact an analysis of 6 clinical studies published in the prestigious Journal of Clinical and Consulting Psychology showed that adding these kinds of techniques to a conventional weight loss plan DOUBLED the amount of weight lost AND helped keep the weight off."

The kit was on the back of my mind all afternoon, and I was just itching to get started.  This is all quite exciting.  Like a new toy.  I am hoping it is far more than that, however.

After a vegetable-heavy Chinese take-out dinner at home with my husband, I settled down to read and review the questions in the accelerator program workbook.

I put it aside briefly to watch Survivor Thailand (I was happy to see that the two older ladies are hanging in, while sad to see Jake voted off) and skimmed the book during the commercials.

Seeing how emaciated the survivors look, I was happy to have this program to lose the extra pounds.  Although I thoroughly enjoy the vicarious experience of living in the wilds of Thailand or Africa or Australia or the South Pacific via the show,  I don't think I'd go too far in the game.

I like my creature comforts too well.  Hot showers.  Long baths.  Wonderful bed.  And my DH and dogs.

After the show, I plopped myself in front of this screen to do the written  exercises.  I rarely hand-write anything these days, as I am far faster--  and infinitely more legible -- when I wordprocess:

DAY 2

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
~ Mark Twain

Last night, DH and I threw off the bowlines and listened to Disc 2: Deleting the "Fat" Program and Installing the "Thin" Program before we fell asleep.

Awakening, he says, "I want to do this with you!"  We may not need that personal CD player with earphones...

This is going to be a wonderful adventure to be shared. Yes!

I checked into the forum, updated my profile including My Story and a new signature, and responded to messages left in reply to my original post.   I appreciated the warm welcome and sharing.

My Story as posted on the forum profile:

"Slim, trim, fit!" "105 and vibrantly alive!" Those are my goals and I need all the motivation I can get , especially in the exercise department. These are in line with my life goals: "Healthy, Happy, One with God."  Follow my Smart Technique odyssey to my goal weight -- here on the forum and (at this website).

My goal weight is 105 and my goal size is 4 -- what I once was 20 years ago. Years of less-than-perfect eating habits and much-too-sporadic exercising have taken their toll.

It's never too late! This program dropped into my awareness out of the blue, and I intend to heed its teachings and become the best that I can be.

Wishing you your goal weight! I am grateful for the company.

I include those replies here, as my participation and interaction with these real-life individuals will be a significant part of this experience.

Talking Re: Welcome!

Hi Kat,

Thank you for your welcome and sharing. Like yours, my life has been dripping with synchronicities. For those scratching your head at that word, here's an apt description of synchronicity that appears applicable for a number of folks here:

My experience discovering the program was a little like yours, Out of the Blue. I usually can't stand infomercials but I ended up watching this one all the way through... and ordering the program at a time when money was tight (and so were my clothes). I was stunned, really. That was back in July and this is one purchase that I haven't regreted not once!!!! I hope you feel the same way.

Yes, a lot of my clothes are now forlornly hanging in my closet with dusty shoulders, as I like my clothes comfortable and not tight. After just one day with the CDs, I'm already feeling the same as you. There's a LOT of motivational potential for me here, as I can't wait to expand my wardrobe with just what I already have.

quote:

KathLynne: This program has helped my sweetie, a good friend and myself change our relationship to food. I have never been into bulletin boards either, but I find myself loving the boards. OOB, Pili will be thrilled with her transformation!!!

My DH right now has no option but to hear it with me at night, as my portable disc with earphones won't arrive for sometime. My co-workers' interest has been piqued, but sustaining that interest, I suspect will depend on my progress (and Pili's).

quote:

KathLynne: Looking back now, I know that I must have a great guardian angel who found a way to get me to watch that infomercial. It works, and I am happier because of the changes that I have been able to make in my life thanks to the SMART technique.

Congratulations to you and your guardian angel on your weight loss. What a team! Yes, I too believe we don't do anything by our lonesomes. The Guidance is there if only we'd stop and be still and not only hear, but listen.

quote:

KathLynne: The sun is shining! As for the holidays, these is a holidays and party CD to help you too!!!

Thanks for the tip, Kat. Is it ok to listen ahead to this one before doing the basics? Next week is party-laden for me and I think it would be... in order (pun intended).

Glad to meet you and for your sharing.

Oh my goodness what a surprise to see someone else from Santa Maria, CA.

You and Kat come from a beautiful area of California. We have friends who live there -- and they have their own personal vineyard and even bottle wine for friends and family. But oh-oh, no vino for me until I get to my goal -- and then, sparingly thereafter! (Aren't I getting this drill down pat !?)

quote:
laserrell: I have been cruising this community since yesterday, 12/1/02. When out of the blue saw two familiar faces of the two mommies and left the station on.

We were alerted to it at about the same time, I see. Last weekend, those angels/guardian spirits must have been out full force, nudging folks up and down the California coast and beyond.

quote:
laserrell: When I found out that these were tapes to listen to and change my habits, I knew instantly that I had to have them! In the past year I have learned all about the power of the mind when I learned to overcome my anxiety and panic attacks with a set of listening tapes that saved my life. I truely believe in the power of relaxation tapes and changing one's behavior by changing how you talk to yourself and the power of positve thinking.

Twenty five years ago, positive-thinking and subliminal tapes helped me/us to achieve academic goals and since then, positive programming has continued to pave our way in achieving our career goals. A voracious reader, I've read and listened to the seminal works of Max Freedom Long, Napoleon Hill, Norman Vincent Peale, et al. They have impacted my life in countless and life-enhancing ways, as I believe Mary Holmes will.

I have full confidence that this reprogramming will be as effective in dealing with this extra baggage. I am not (much) into material riches, and wish to tread softly on this Earth, traveling lightly -- and that includes body weight. These CDs will help me reach that life goal.

quote:
laserrell: I can hardly wait for my tapes to get here, so I am reading all of these great posts! I guess I will be talking to you later! Laura

I was thoroughly impressed with the rapidity of the delivery. I'd ordered the kit late Sunday and they arrived by mid-day Thurday. That's less than 4 days. Hang in there, Laura. In the meantime, keep reading the message board. The stories are impressive and inspiring. Remember that ketchup commercial: A-N-T-I-C-I-P-A-T-I-O-N?

Hi Keliga,

quote:
keliga: Welcome, girls!!!!!!! Glad to have you here.

Thank for your cheery welcome. I'm delighted to be here.

quote:
keliga: I think your stories of finding the infomertial are like a lot of ours. I was down in Biloxi, Miss. at a motor home park one weekend, and we were all getting ready to go to bed one night. I had the television on and was about to turn it off, just flipping through the channels to see if there was anything on worth staying up for, since my hubby hadn't got ready for bed yet, and I saw The Mommies. Now, I can remember seeing these two ladies on tv. They had a "talk show" and they have been in the Palmolive comertials. I LOVE these two ladies. I used to watch their show whenever I could. I didn't even realise what the infomercial was about for a few seconds. I just stopped because of the Mommies. Well, needless to say, I was hooked. I saw the before and after photos of them and watched the rest of the infomertial. As I was out of town, I didn't have a phone to call with, so I wrote the number down on a piece of paper. All weekend, I wanted to go home so that I could call. lol. when I got home, I looked all over for that darned number, and couldn't find it. For 2 days and nights, I browsed through the tv looking for the infomertial again. And I tried every combination I could think of for the web site, but I just couldn't remember what it was. Then, as I was looking for a pen in my purse a few days later, there it was. I was so ecstatic!!!!!!

What a great story! Your subconscious was not going to let go of this for you. And it looked like it was worth every minor setback:

quote:
keliga: I called, they sent it, and 7 weeks later, I am almost 30 ponds lighter. I don't regret spending this money, I think it is the best thing I have done in a long time. I see it as an investment in the future, mine and my children's.

7 weeks...30 pounds. Bravo! I can see that it has already paid for itself for you many times over. Who can put a price on attaining the best thing you've done in a long time? Your enthusiasm is contagious and the lift it gives others, including me, is priceless. So, thank YOU for making this investment.

And think of the positive, healthy example you are setting for your children. Besides, with these tapes/discs around the house, they too have access to their subconscious.

quote:
keliga: I am glad that you have decided to join us here, as I think that these forums are a big part of the program. You can "talk" to other people who are going through the same thing you are, who are just starting out, and who have been going at it fo a while. You can post your successes, as well as your failures, and read those of others all over the place. It really helps to know that there are others out there with the same troubles. So, just jump on in whenever you feel like it, and post away.

I am glad, too. When I am not at my people-intensive workplace, I can be a bit of an introvert . While I like people, large doses of in-your-face encounters drain me and I need to recharge with time by myself. So getting out on to a forum is not the most natural thing to do on my day off, but maybe here, it is a good thing for me. As you can see, I am posting away...

Originally posted by VickeyJust browsing and found this thread it's amazing, that guardian angel was working overtime. If you think about it, late-night and early mornings are perfect times to present this Smart Technique kit. What better time to appeal to our subconscious minds than when we are most receptive -- either falling asleep, drowsy, or just getting up.

Those angels/guardians know how to reach us when we're reachable. Most other times, my conscious mind is so dominant (domineering?) that the "phone" is off the hook and no calls from the subconscious mind are received.

quote:
Vickey:You got to know until 4 weeks ago I didn't even know how to get on the computer only how to dust it had no desire to even learn but now you can't keep me from my Weight loss Buddies. Not only have I lost 13.6 lbs I have learned how to get on here by myself and am becoming a pro.
Good for you, Vickey. While I am no computer expert, the Internet has been a wonderful, ever-changing learning experience for me, as well as being a huge blessing in my life. What a resource!

Chances are that if I did not have a chance to research this product online -- including the fortuitous finding of this forum -- my conscious mind would have blown off the thought to buy it.

My Pili (my pet name for my subconscious) even drove me to do new things on the Internet. To procure the Smart Technique kit, I opened a PayPal account and an eBay account. Heretofore, I had been reticent about using my charge card number online, but somehow this was appealing enough to go ahead and do it anyway. Will wonders ever cease?

Congratulations on your weight loss, Vickey! And besides all the good feelings that comes with that loss (and in such a short time) is that you are now smoothly navigating the Information Highway. You pro, you.

At age 51, I am grateful that I am a full participant of the computer age. I've lived to see the day that computers are virtually everywhere, at least in the U.S. As a kid, this reality seemed like a distant science fiction notion.

And here we are...
quote:
Vickey:Just keep posting away it makes my day a whole lot nicer to know there are others who have the same situations as I do and that I can share my problems with. Thank you all for listening, encouraging and understanding. Vickey
Anyone who says that computers are impersonal hasn't really explored its full potential. Here we are -- wearing our hearts on our sleeves, battling our weight demons together, motivating one another, and making friends.

It's a....wondrous time.

DAY 3

Posts to the forum:

Thread: New here...with a little info on hypnosis to help

Thumbs up

Greetings daknjas!

I wish to express my thanks for your thoughtful and informative messages. I know very little about hypnosis, and I have very much enjoyed your enlightening and lucid explanations.

As a working single mom with two children, you are busy and your time and energy are at a premium. Your generosity is therefore even more appreciated by me.

I wish you much success in achieving your goal.

By marking significant weight-loss achievements, those avatars are effective motivators; they speak louder than words. I love yours. It is virtually screaming at me and I like "the sound" of it.

I agree: losing weight is a process and words of sincere encouragement are a boon. I am buying into the "permanent" part of this program's spiel -- hook, line and sinker. I hope my subconscious is doing the same.

keliga:
My top 5 list......
5. Think positive. I think that has a lot to do with success. Just as if you think "I am not going to like this food", you more than likely won't, if you think" I am not going to do well on the "diet", then you most likely won't.

This is a P.S. to #5. Don't think of it as a "diet". Think of it as a way of life, or a plan. Remember, "diet" is "die" with a "t".

Indeed, the word "die with a t" is a negatively charged word for me, a former yo-yo dieter. "A positive modification in my way of eating" is so much easier for me to accept.

Just this morning, I consciously used your tip. Usually, I drizzle a whole bunch of honey (simple carb) over my oatmeal (complex carb). Today, I put some peach slices over it instead. Remembering to "always eat a protein with a carb,"I also had a piece of leftover chicken from last night. A novel combination to be sure.

"This is easy enough," I thought. "If those Survivors' relatives can eat grubs, a scorpion, and a tarantula out of love for their loved ones, I can do this."

See the Reward Challenge for the grisly details. Enough to kill your appetite.

I ate just 1/2 of my oatmeal and gave the rest to my dogs (maybe thinking of the grubs, scorpion and tarantula did kill my appetite?). The truth of the matter is: I was FINE -- satiated -- with half of my usual quantity! Eating mindfully (and with a positive mindset) does make a difference.

quote:

keliga:
4. Get a plan. I think that just "watching what you eat" isn't enough. At least for me. I tend to "forget" things that I have eaten. And those things tend to add up to hundreds of calories.

Keeping a daily eating diary has already been the biggest eye-opener for me. My Online Daily Food Diary has been a great tool to accomplish my goal to scrutinize my eating in detail for seven days. (The Blog http://www.blogger.com/ is a free service).

I just keep editing -- which is easy to do - as the day goes on -- something I can do here at home or at work. The biggest advantage is that I can read it post-hoc, so I can learn from the entries.

Reviewing the Eat More and Weigh Less booklet as we came up with our grocery list has made a big difference in cutting down temptations. Our refrig is now stocked with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. The pantry is chip-free. (The CDs must be kicking in as I have not had a craving for BBQ potato chips )

quote:

keliga:
3. Drink plenty of water. I have noticed that in the weeks I haven't lost, if I go back in my mind and think, I didn't drink enough water that week.

Good 'ole Water. I love it.

A few years ago, it became patently clear to me how soft drink manufacturers/sugar barons had so insidiously brain-washed us with their marketing and made us addicts.

A fascinating read: : REFINED SUGAR: The Sweetest Poison of All

I was contributing to their ill-gained wealth at the cost of my health. I stopped, cold-turkey. I don't even bother with diet sodas. If "they" are capable of poisoning us with sugar, "they" are just as capable of harming health with all those chemicals.

Pepsi-Cola Slogans:
1960: Be sociable. Have a Pepsi
1981: Pepsi's got your taste for life!

1930s: 7UP - You Like It, It Likes You.

Ever since, water has been my beverage of choice. What did surprise me that I thought I was drinking lots of water -- about 8 oz x 8 = 64 oz daily. While boosting it up to 100 oz has so far been do-able, it is a modification, nonetheless.

A side benefit is I am getting up (and moving) more often to take that trot over to the bathroom. (My dogs love it, as that's when I give them my hugs... I never lack for company in the john )

And that is what I plan to do until I get to my goal weight. I see what good it has done for you and other success stories here to have social reinforcement.

Drum roll, please................................

1. Listen to the tapes/cd's. Every day. Without fail. And if you can fit more than once into your day, do it. Listen while you are doing housework. Listen while you are sleeping. Listen while you are excercising. LISTEN.

It did not occur to me to listen to them other than in darkness, lying down. I will do this!

Again, thanks for valuable tips., Keli. You've been a help to me -- and others, here. Your sharing spirit shines through your words.

Positively yours,
Out of the blue. (ootb)

I jumped on the bed and grabbed the remote... flipping through the "I've seen it", no, no, yuck, yuck, no way... wait go back... what is this? I too grabbed the envelope and quietly called the number.

Ohh, I am sorry to hear about your future father-in-law. I too lost mine from cancer. I made the most of the time we had left (I've written about it here ) and I hope you and your fiancee will do the same.

Like you, I still get flash-backs of that trying time, but in the main, I have recovered from the brokenness of that deep grief. Most of my weight gain happened after my father's passing; so, likely my over-eating was comforting. My doing something about the extra weight with this program is a good indicator that I have mended.

Mended. But I have not forgotten. I like to think our fathers have not forgotten us either, Lisa. Maybe it is they who made sure we paid attention to The Mommies on their infomercial. As you said, "things do happen for a reason..."

Thread: Out of the Blue: A Success Story

Happy Sunday, Sundayze!

Thank you for your generous sharing:

Five Success Tips:

5. Practice your responses to unwanted, unhealthy food. When I am confronted with food from others or worse, myself, I already have responses that were not automatic at first, but through practice, have become automatic. I also tell myself things like "I don't snack between meals anymore" and "I am not a late night snacker".

I'll have a good shot at dealing with the "real world" and all its food temptations when tomorrow comes. I started this over the weekend in a far more "controlled" and "controllable" environment -- my home.

Tomorrow, there's a Christmas luncheon with friends... Tuesday, lunch at the office...Wednesday, a Christmas dinner party... And then there's all the sweet Christmas goodies -- home-baked cookies, fruitcakes and breads -- that our clients bring in this time of year. Oh, boy.

What is new for me with this program is the snacking. I'm not used to having five eating periods -- the 3 meal + 2 inbetween snacks. It's still early on, but I must say the metabolic program is working. I haven't felt hungry once. To think, I've been doing it wrong most of my life. A mind blower.

quote:

sundayze:
4. Find an exercise plan you will be able to maintain for the rest of your life. Exercise needs to be scheduled into our busy lives.

You're absolutely right. I need to MAKE the time. Exercise was my least favorite activity to do. (Notice I am using the past tense) This area is where major reprogramming is in order for me.

I can hear Pili whining: "But I hate getting hot and sticky..."

Yesterday, I started a daily routine doing the 5 Rites earlier in the year, but stopped even if I basically thought it was easy and my conscious mind loved the whole idea. I resumed it yesterday. And to help me stick with it, last night I found a video of it online. Being very "visual," I need to engage that sense to help me along, and so, I ordered it on the spot: 5 Rites: Ancient Secret...

I don't like jangly exercise, so in the meantime, I've pulled out my yoga and Callanetics videos which heretofore have been dust collectors. A gradient sounds like a realistic way of doing this major modification in lifestyle.

quote:

sundayze:
3. Find a food plan you can believe in and stick to for the rest of your life. Water is also a key component. Your foods must be readily available, which will require advance planning and preparation.

Like most things in life: Luck/Success is the intersection of opportunity meeting preparation. This program is the opportunity. Preparation is my end of the bargain.

Ultimately, luck/success is mine to create. My mind knows it. My subconscious is learning to accept it and help me create it.

quote:

sundayze:
2. KEEP A DAILY LOG/DIARY. This is really hard for some individuals to do, but I feel this has many uses. It keeps you actively involved in the weight loss journey. It helps you identify triggers, techniques that worked or foods you should avoid.

I had a whole fresh apple last night. Something I hadn't had in months. And I used to love apples, but somehow it dropped out of my awareness. Writing it down made me realize how much of my past eating was done so numbly -- without awareness. The diary, I can see, is a real key to success.

quote:

sundayze:
Also, daily contact with "fellow losers" on this board is a must. Whether you are having a good day or a bad day, the support here has kept me from going off plan or binging countless times. The boards alone have been worth the cost of the program and it's totally free. DON'T GET ANY IDEAS, MARY!

Fellow losers... a positive thought ...who would have thought! Just my sitting here verbalizing my thoughts in response to fellow losers' thoughts has been part of the "therapy."

The best things in life are free, so the saying goes. So true in this case. And yes, water is free. A good thing. Although I haven't met Mary, I like to think the good she is doing with her tapes/CDs is reward enough for her. We all need to make living, but we don't need to make a killing.

Besides, the testimonies and good words I have read here -- well, they are priceless. The cost of running this forum is more than offset by the word-of-mouth advertising from real people on this forum. I would not have plunked my cash down so readily if were not for those of you who posted here. It is a fair exchange. A win/win.

quote:

sundayze:
1. Listen to the tapes all the way through. When finished, start over by re-answering the questions in the workbook. As you learn more about yourself, triggers, saboteurs, your answers will change and you will grow in your understanding of yourself, your body, your beliefs, your self-confidence, your subconscious.

I am looking forward to re-reading what I've written at the end of the program. The proof of the pudding. Oops, yet another food pun.

In the meantime, I am enjoying the process. I have never shared a weight-loss experience so openly before with anyone other than my DH. This is a novel experience for me. A good, novel experience.

DAY 4: Monday, December 09, 2002

 DAY 4

I felt great.  Over the weekend I followed the program as faithfully as I was learning it.  All told, maybe about 95% in accordance with the Food Lovers Program.

Before I showered, my curiosity would not be ignored. (I was planning to weigh myself just once a week).  Out came the scale.

The following post to the forum after the shower describes that experience:

Thread: Out of the Blue: A Success Story

Greetings to klm1to1 and lizleigh!

Thank you for your tips. I will take your advice to heart: I WILL PERSEVERE!

72 hours ago, I dug the bathroom scale out of the storage closet to start this program. I had underestimated my weight by at least five pounds. After I shuddered, I sat down here to get started on the program. This revelation gave me even more of a boost to do this program and do it well.

I can't believe what I saw on the scale this morning. I lost 4 pounds in 72 hours. I couldn't believe my eyes.

"Can it possibly be?"

I looked again. I wasn't hallucinating. 4 pounds. Yup.

I am beside myself. This program works! Well, I am off to the real world and I will let you know how I fare...until then, let us persevere!

Positively yours,
Out of the blue (ootb)

Now if that isn't proof positive that it pays to get SMART.

Midday, my four "hula sisters"  -- Violet, Virginia, Dorothy, and Dolores, four fellow senior women who join me at my home for weekly hula lessons, took my friend (also our hula kumu -- teacher) and me out for a dim sum luncheon.  Dim sum, which translates to "touching your heart" are little Chinese delicacies with various tastes and styles.  The commonality is each morsel is simply delectable.

The CDs have kicked in. Ordinarily a dim sum tea luncheon is a time for me to indulge -- pig out.  Instead, the restraint came very naturally and instead, I ate the equivalent of a palm-size portion of protein in the form of shrimp and bean curd dumplings, avoiding the pork and deep-fried choices. My carbo was the rice flour wrappings of the dim sum and a small helping of noodles.  My vegetable was Chinese broccoli -- a favorite of mine.

No doubt, the food is flavorful in part due to salt, but in the main, a compensation is that the ingredients are fresh and unprocessed.  I also drank three tall glasses of water and four teacups of fragrant jasmine tea to dilute the salt content.

I felt satiated on just a third of what I may have previously consumed and learned that conscious food choices are the key to surviving the eating out forays with friends.

Later in the day on the way home, I purchased two exercise tapes:  Pilates for Dummies, which has 5 star reviews over at Amazon, and Leslie Sansone's Walk the Walk and a comfortable workout outfit.  As soon as I got home, I got into the workout outfit and walking shoes and went for a three mile walk with Leslie.

This subconscious reprogramming is powerful stuff.

It's evening, and I've spent a good amount of time reading Annie's story and posts at the Provida Forum.  She started the Six Week Makeover Program by Michael Thurmond last October (2001) and has lost 125 pounds.

I followed her saga by doing a search on her posts. Hers is an incredibly remarkable story.

To reach her goal weight, she was clearly focused, deviated little, well-organized, and persevering.  I am so very happy for her as well as for the rest of us who will  learn from her fine example.

She is an inspiration to all and especially to me.

DAY 5: Tuesday, December 10, 2002

DAY 5

So I wouldn't have to go back and forth to the bottled water dispenser to my office with a little Dixie cup, I'd planned to bring a tall 16 oz glass to work. In my haste to pack up my snacks and lunch, I left it on the kitchen counter. But not to worry.  Lo and behold, on the top of the water dispenser was a stack of the same-sized (LARGE) plastic cups that one of our vendors had just gifted us. A timely, but odd gift, wouldn't you say? Likely, synchronicity at work.

"`Aumākua take care!"

After we concluded our business meeting, DH and I told Cia that we wanted to her to have her own kit -- that is, if she was receptive to the whole idea.  Of course, she was. She and Malou have already done very well with Weight Watchers: Malou lost 17 pounds in 4 weeks and Cia, 12 pounds in 3 weeks.  The SMART TECHNIQUE might just kick it up a notch or more for them.

If it works, maybe she will pay it forward to Malou.  It was Malou who raised my own weight consciousness when she joined Weight Watchers (her mother's gift to her).  Then Cia joined her at WW.  I briefly considered WW, but being an introvert -- requiring personal time and space to reenergize -- in a people-intensive work arena , I knew that it was not for me.

And then, SMART TECHNIQUE found me.

Cia, DH and I recessed over to Coco's for lunch and discussed how the unconscious and how it ties in with attaining goals. Cia is one of the dearest people in my life -- the friend is who "reaches for my hand and touches my heart."  She too has several much desired goals and it is my heart's desire that she will attain them.

I ordered Coco's chicken strips appetizer as my protein and chomped on my baby carrots as my vegetable. I realize now that I forgot the carbo.  That explains why I was hungry for the snack in the afternoon -- my metabolic flame was not well-stoked.  I'm still learning my ABCs: A = protein, B = complex carbo, C = vegetable.

Fitting in the two snacks into the work day, much less the bathroom breaks, are challenges. Work is pretty non-stop, requiring unbroken concentration.  Somehow I managed to do both between appointments and without having to excuse myself with a client.

If there is a will, there is a way.

DAY 6

Thread: Out of the Blue: A Success Story

Greetings Lisa,

I heard this on the news: According to the National Health Institute, Americans -- on average -- gain a pound between Thanksgiving and Christmas; the problem is they never lose it.

With SMART, aren't we the lucky ones! With our subconscious minds in our corner this year, we can get through this period with the least amount of weight gain.

And if that pound should be gained, losing it is more of cinch than ever before. No more cumulative holiday poundage. Yeah!

Positively yours, ootb The Power of Commitment

Thread: Walk Away The Pounds

The SMART CDs have so energized me that two days ago (Day 4), I stopped by a store on the way home to buy an exercise video. My body wanted to move to a new groove.

Out of the rows of exercise tapes, I picked Leslie Sansone's Walk the Walk: A Christian Inspired Workout. I'm no zealot, but with the goals I've set for myself -- healthier eating, more exercise and weight loss, I figured I could use all the physical, mental and spiritual help I can get. And this temple of my spirit is in need of some maintenance...

I'm glad I did. That afternoon I did both workouts: a 1 mile walk and then a 2 mile. I found myself slipping into exercise mode with the most ease ever in the history of this 51 year old body. And unlike yoga and Callanetics, it is cardiovascular and non-stop movement.

I didn't even mind the sweating! Could it be the CDs are kicking in -- you know, "easily, effortlessly, completely, permanently"?

It is now the best exercise tape I own. And I own a stack of them from the last time I made a concerted effort in the battle the bulge when I dieted with Nutrisystems and exercised dutifully to the videotapes then (Richard Simmons, Callen, Jane Fonda and Denise Austen).

Today, I actually got up early to use this videotape right after a Food Lovers Program A + B (protein and carb) breakfast for yet another 3 mile walk. My two dogs just stared at me, no doubt wondering what got into me. One even took off out the doggie door and watched me perplexedly through the sliding glass door.

This evening my husband joined me (and liked it as well) for a 1 mile walk. 4 miles in one day. I still can't believe it as I type this.

I also bought Pilates for Dummies, which I quickly previewed. It looks promising, but I save its mat exercises for later. I need to move! (Did I say that?)

Has anyone tried the Mommies' "I Hate to Exercise" tapes? If yes, what is your opinion of them?

Positively yours,
Out of the Blue The Power of Commitment

Thread: What if I've given up?

Greetings Bluehill,

Your message struck many familiar chords with me. Like you I am a busy professional with myriad and sometimes overwhelming family and community obligations. In fact, like you, Raisin Bran and soy milk was my usual breakfast.

And like you, I was once a high energy person. My 50th year on this good Earth was great, but I also noticed that I was increasingly sedentary, no doubt now that it was a metabolism that was now burning at an all-time low level.

On my 51st birthday in late September, I was in bed with the nastiest cold ever. This was followed by another cold in November. And last week, yet another! In contrast, I had only two colds in all ten years of my fourth decade, and both very mild and knocked out with Vitamin C and Echinacea.

This did not bode well for my 50s. What happened to my once robust immune system? What was up with my flagging energy level? Was this the fragility of old age?

I started this program last week feeling physically low, but maybe the timing was actually perfect. As does
AARP, my city designates its citizens 50 and over as senior citizens. Well, I was feeling way too "senior" for my age and I didn't like it one bit. I felt like I had nothing to lose and all to gain at that point.

In less than a week, while the sniffles are still tapering away, I am feeling more energized than I've felt in a long time. See my message on wanting to move my body!

I think this is the result of doing the SMART CDs and the Food Lovers Program together. They seem to go hand-in-hand. And so far I have not missed the raisin bran and the soy milk. Oatmeal with a dash of cinnamon and a piece of chicken isn't so bad. Really.

I hope you'll consider giving the Food Lovers Program a try. It may give you the boost it has given me. My metabolic fires have been dramatically relit. Whoosh! (Do read the passage in the booklet about the small logs and the big logs -- makes lots of sense)

Today, I am feeling 49 again. Maybe even younger.

Positively yours,
ootb The Power of Commitment

DAY 7: Thursday, December 12, 2002

DAY 7

Today is weigh in: my body has permanently released a total of 5.5 unwanted pounds this week.  <doing the happy dance; feel free to join me>

I arrived to the office to find a huge Christmas gift from Dr. Kim on my desk.  A beautiful basket filled with healthy plants.  A perfect gift.  One that I can't eat.

There was also another gift -- a wrapped metal pot filled with assorted Ghirardelli chocolates from C-R.  I passed them to without weight problems (Johnny K and Jennifer and Jeffrey N).

Then, my first client of the day Dorothy W brought in a box of See's toffee.  Add it to the plate of won ton chips and Chinese almond cookies from Virginia F two days ago, a box of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts from Eddie J. last week, a package of arare mix from Helene O and the Hawaiian Candy box of goodies from Sharon U. I certainly appreciate the thoughtfulness of their sweet gestures, but does one deal with such gifts?

During my lunch hour, I caught up with my co-worker, Don, who let me know that the exercise bicycle had arrived, along with a tin of Jelly Bellies from Aileen S, who handles our retirement funds.

Don and I sat and chewed the fat, mainly getting caught up with his life.  He is so proud of his son, Kyle, and rightfully so as he is a fine, polite, and well-raised boy. I completely forgot to have my prepared lunch!

To keep on schedule for my afternoon appointments, I hastily downed the lunch to keep true to the FLP program.  So much for eating slowly and consciously.  It was a packed afternoon and I was not able to stop and have my mini-meal.

Before I left work, I made sure to eat my prepared mini-meal in the parking lot on the way home so I would not be ravenous at dinner.  It worked.

Cia gave me a little bag of baked BBQ chips.  An endearing, thoughtful gesture, as she knows how I've loved them.  But alas, it is processed food and with salt, albeit a small amount.  I will save it for February 19.  In the meantime, I will do my best to stick with whole, natural foods as much as possible.

My workday is pretty much non-stop.  When I am not with clients, I am interacting with my co-workers.  I end my workday, exhausted. I sometimes wish I could re-energize by being with others as extroverts do, but an introvert I am, true blue.

After dinner (DH fixed chicken with Mrs. Dash seasoning), we watched Survivor Thailand.  The survivors were given a mirror.  The gals (Jan 53 and Helen 47) quickly looked at themselves, while the guys hogged the mirror, preening and admiring themselves.  I watched, grateful that I am not having to starve myself to lose this weight, thanks to the Food Lovers Program.

I am surprised to learn that "Gramma Jan" is 53 -- two years older than me.

Tonight, we will be listening to the next SMART disc.
