The Carnival History [Venice] The oldest document pertaining to the use of masks in Venice dates back to 2nd May 1268. Masquerades homepage: Various groups were distinguishable by the multicolored embroidered stockings that their members wore. The groups were given fanciful names (Cortesi, Ortolani, Sempiterni), which had to be accepted by the group members by way of a statute. The aim of these groups was to create and prepare the entertainment and shows during the carnival. Between 1487 and 1565 there were 23 different groups throughout Venice.
Harry Potter's Wizarding World is, by necessity, concealed from the eyes of those who live in the Muggle World. Likewise, Brigadoon in Scotland, Rivendell and Lothlorien, the hidden Elven retreats in Middle Earth.
The sterling super hero and super heroine must also have their secret retreats. Batman, Robin and Batgirl have the bat cave, Superman has his Fortress of Solitude in the frozen north country, and Zorro has the underground sanctuary. Transmediums Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus go to their [last] human city, Zion in The Matrix.

Isis herself is said to have established the first temple of the Mysteries, the oldest being those practiced at Memphis. Of these there were two orders, the Lesser to which the many were eligible, and which consisted of dialogue and ritual, with certain signs, tokens, grips, passwords; and the Greater, reserved for the few who approved themselves worthy of being entrusted with the highest secrets of science, philosophy, and religion. For these the candidate had to undergo trial, purification, danger, austere asceticism, and, at last, regeneration through dramatic death amid rejoicing. Such as endured the ordeal with valor were then taught, orally and by symbol, the highest wisdom to which man had attained, including geometry, astronomy, the fine arts, the laws of nature, as well as the truths of faith. Awful oaths of secrecy were exacted, and Plutarch describes a man kneeling, his hands bound, a cord round his body, and a knife at his throat, death being the penalty of violating the obligation. Even then, Pythagoras had to wait almost twenty years to learn the hidden wisdom of Egypt, so cautious were they of candidates, especially of foreigners. But he made noble use of it when, later, he founded a secret order of his own at Crotona, in Greece, in which, among other things, he taught geometry, using numbers as symbols of spiritual truth.
From Egypt the Mysteries passed with little change to Asia Minor, Greece, and Rome, the names of local gods being substituted for those of Osiris and Isis. The Grecian or Eleusinian Mysteries, established 1800 B.C., represented Demeter and Persephone, and depicted the death of Dionysius with stately ritual which led the neophyte from death into life and immortality. They taught the unity of God, the immutable necessity of morality, and a life after death, investing initiates with signs and passwords by which they could know each other in the dark as well as in the light. The Mithraic or Persian Mysteries celebrated the eclipse of the Sun-god, using the signs of the zodiac, the processions of the seasons, the death of nature, and the birth of spring. The Adoniac or Syrian cults were similar, Adonis being killed, but revived to point to life through death. In the Cabirie Mysteries on the island of Samothrace, Atys the Sun was killed by his brothers the Seasons, and at the vernal equinox was restored to life. So, also, the Druids, as far north as England, taught of one God the tragedy of winter and summer, and conducted the initiate through the valley of death to life everlasting.

The O2 reunion on December 10th, a sweet gift for The Ahmet Education Fund, begs a reunion tour. ?Immortals who walk among mortals? is a favourite theme in legend, mythology, and religious study. Stonehenge manuscript discovered by Christian Heck

....Medieval representations of Stonehenge are extremely rare. For generations we have known of only two, dateable to the earlier 14th century. Further views do not appear until the second half of the 15th century, after a complete break in both the spirit and form of imagery. I can now describe, for the first time to the English-speaking world, a newly-discovered medieval drawing of Stonehenge created in the 1440s.
....It is the first known design to represent Stonehenge not just as a symbolic image, but with precise observations on its form and construction techiniques. It bridges perfectly the worlds of medieval myth and Renaissance observation. The discovery provides an opportunity to reconsider the two previously known drawings....
....The manuscript had been listed in catalogues published in 1841, 1846, and 1878, but none of those noted the Stonehenge drawing. It is on folio 552, that is the front side of sheet 55.
....In the chronicle, the drawing lies between the years 480 and 486, consistent with the earlier records. Stonehenge is written immediately above. Below, the Latin text reads:
Hoc anno chorea gigantum de Hibernia non vi sed arte merlin est derecta apud Stonehenge juxta amsbery
Translated, "That year Merlin, not by force but by art, brought and erected the giants' round from Ireland, at Stonehenge near Amesbury".

The masquerade presented many of the ideas that are recognized by scholars as the heart of the eighteenth century. One such concept represented at the masquerade was the idea of the self. A reason for the popularity of the masquerade was because the masks worn there obscured people, allowing them to be something else. This was a very attractive idea to people during this period, due to rigid social restraints. Masqueraders commonly dressed as their opposites--the noblewoman dressed as a milkmaid and the footman dressed as a king. Harlequin is always dressed as a humble serf or a porter as in Carlo Goldoni's "Servant to two Masters". Check the Invisible Circus @ Immortals and The Mattacino, linked with Trump 0, as is the Harlequin figure. The modern deck usually refers to the 'Wild Card' as The Joker. The associate word "mattinate" (matin饳) originally meant a production staged by young patricians in convoys of boats, performed in spring and summer.

In the love duet 'which becomes a kind of microcosm of the whole opera' the tension between disguise and disclosure is concentrated: Amelia is persuaded to confess the feelings she has tried to bury. She is then literally unveiled after Gustavus heads off in his disguise, yet the revelation is deceptive. And the special combination of pleasure and danger that is peculiar to Ballo's color becomes a tour de force in the final scene when Oscar is tricked into giving up the king's masquerade.

Pippin retreived one of the legendary crystalline Palantiri after the Ents brought an end to the reign of terror waged by the great wizard Saruman. These powerful crystal spheres enabled their users to communicate and witness events over great distances. Seven of these seer globes were brought to Middle-earth by Elendil.
The 'Stones of Seeing' entry in Arda Encyclopedia: There were originally seven palantiri in Middle-earth (there were evidently others in Aman, too). Three were definitely lost or destroyed: those of Annﭩnas, Amon Sﬠand Osgiliath. The Stone of Elostirion in the Tower Hills was taken back to Aman on the Ring-bearers' White Ship. The Anor-stone and the Orthanc-stone [above] both survived into the Fourth Age. These seeing stones are discussed @ Saruman the White and Supper at Weathertop.
Gondolin, 'The Hidden Rock', secret city of King Turgon surrounded by the Encircling Mountains, is linked to Gondor, 'Land of Stone'.
