The Roman Arena
Many popular ideas about the Roman arena were formed in the nineteenth century from popular images and accounts. The influential artist Jean L鯮 G鲴me used genuine gladiatorial art and equipment from Pompeii as models for his paintings of ancient Rome and the arena, but he also invented freely in dramatizing his scenes. Movies from Quo Vadis to Gladiator have drawn on such works to depict a world of strangely armed gladiators, Christians nobly awaiting attack by lions, and "thumbs down" death-gestures by emperors and rabid crowds. Actual Roman images of the arena are quite different: crowds and emperors are rarely shown, we are not sure which direction the thumb actually pointed in the famous death gesture, and victims of attack by big cats were certainly neither dignified nor noble.

ARCHEOLOGY September-October 2007
The magnificent gladiator sculptures recently recovered by Italian authorities are now displayed in a museum near their findspot, Fiano Romano, north of Rome. Here we bring you not only the abstract of our September/October 2007 cover story about the sculptures, but also an exclusive photo gallery of the frieze panels, which once graced a first-century B.C. tomb, and an interview with the archaeologist assisting in the investigation of those responsible for looting them. To put the Fiano Romano finds into context, Shelby Brown, currently vice president for education and outreach of the Archaeological Institute of America, provided us with an overview of the basics of the Roman arena, along with a gladiator glossary and a bibliography for those who want to know more about the games. As a bonus, we've brought back our reviews of recent gladiator productions.

"But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. ɯwyn I am, ɯmund's daughter.
You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless!
For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him!"
The Ride of the Rohirrim - Merry noticed that Dernhelm had left his place and in the darkness was moving steadily forward, until at last he was riding just in rear of the king's guard.
The Battle of the Pelennor Fields - But Th鯤en was not utterly forsaken. The knights of his house lay slain about him...
Yet one stood there still: Dernhelm the young, faithful beyond fear; and he wept, for he had loved his lord as a father.

Sword of Meriadoc Brandybuck
Merry's sword played a crucial role in the War of the Ring. The sword came from a barrow on the Barrow-downs that may have been the grave of the last prince of Cardolan, who was killed in battle against the forces of Angmar in 1409. The Hobbits were trapped in the barrow by a Barrow-wight and when Merry awoke from the Barrow-wight's spell, he had a memory of a Man who had fought the Witch-king of Angmar long ago.Tom Bombadil rescued the Hobbits and gave them blades from the barrow. The swords had been made for the war against the Witch-king of Angmar by the Men of Westernesse. They were long, leaf-shaped daggers damasked with serpents in red and gold, and they had black sheaths of light metal set with fiery stones. Pippin's sword, "Troll's Bane" was the nickname of the blade he received on the Barrow-downs.
Merry used his sword in Moria and at Amon Hen, where he managed to cut off the hands and arms of several Orcs before he and Pippin were captured. He laid the sword on the lap of King Th鯤en of Rohan when he became his esquire. But the final and most important time that Merry used the sword was at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. As ɯwyn confronted the Witch-king and was nearly slain, Merry pierced the sinew of the Witch-king's knee, causing the Nazgul to stumble forward. Eowyn then thrust her sword between the Witch-king's crown and mantle and he was vanquished. Afterwards, the blade of Merry's sword disintegrated.
So passed the sword of the Barrow-downs, work of Westernesse. But glad would he have been to know its fate who wrought it slowly long ago in the North-kingdom when the Dunedain were young, and chief among their foes was the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king. No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will.

Tess of the Storm Country was the fifth film Mary Pickford [1893 ? 1979] made for Famous Players, and its prime significance is that, beyond any other single item, it was responsible for making her the most famous of all screen actresses, a distinction she retained unchallenged throughout the rest of her career.... Without Mary?s brilliant performance, Tess would have been just another film.
The picture was released by Paramount on March 30, 1914, 5 reels. With The Mark of Zorro, Douglas Fairbanks? thirtieth feature and his fourth for the newly formed United Artists, the Fairbanks film career made a drastic change; Fairbanks the all-American boy became Fairbanks the swashbuckler.
The Mark of Zorro was the prototype for the Fairbanks features of the Twenties, such as Robin Hood, The Black Pirate, The Gaucho, and The Iron Mask. As such, its importance cannot be overestimated. In the chase through the village toward the close of the film, Fairbanks displays all the stunts, climbs, leaps, and rope swinging that he was to repeat in different costumes and different time periods in all the films to come....
A Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corporation production. Released by United Artists, December 5, 1920. 8 reels.-Anthony Slide and Edward Wagenknecht, FIFTY GREAT AMERICAN SILENT FILMS 1912-1920

Arda states: The Wizards arrived in Middle-earth after the end of the first millennium of the Third Age. They were sent by the Valar to aid Elves and Men, but none knew this but Cí²¤an the Shipwright, Lord of the Grey Havens where their ships put in. Saruman was, at that time, acknowledged leader of the Wizards; Cí²¤an saw that Gandalf was in fact the greater, so he secretly gave him the Red Ring Narya.
