The One Ring was made in the very fires of Mount Doom in Mordor.  It has only one master, Sauron, it's creator, and was created to rule over all the other rings.  During a great battle, Isildor faced Sauron and cut the Ring off his finger.  He was brought to Mount Doom to cast it back into the fires, the only place it could be destroyed, but, instead, kept the Ring.  Isildur was killed and the Ring floated off into a river, where Smeagol, a hobbit, found it.  The Ring made Smeagol act so terribly that he was banished from his own town and fled to the mountains, where the Ring let him live on unnaturally longer and ruined him.  The Ring abandoned Smeagol, now called Gollum, and was found by the most unexpected person, another hobbit named Bilbo Baggins.  Bilbo took it as his own and used it to escape from the very mountains Gollum lived in and from the trolls after answering Gollum's riddles with luck.  The Lord of the Rings picks up from this with Bilbo giving the Ring to his favorite nephew, Frodo Baggins.
