190801 >> an experiment in terror

listening to | fantomas \ the director's cut
feeling | incredible despite the extreme amount of pressure i am under
surrounded by | many miserable looking train commuters

i met mike patton!

he shook my hand!

i saw fantomas play at city live in sydney last night and they were simply incredible!

for those who have never heard of fantomas, take mr bungle, remove the melody and lyrics, then multiply the weirdness factor my 100. now you are getting close to understanding their concept.

tania and i got to fox studios an hour before the doors to the gig opened so we could explore a little and get some dinner. i was very tempted by the extensive range of buffy merchandise. i am going back later to buy a buffy tank top and spike figurine.

at 8.30pm we met up with tania's friend tom and his friends chaz and angus. i had met chaz last time we saw fantomas and thought he was a spunk then. he was looking even better last night. however, angus definitely took the cake! *reow*! what a hottie!! and he kept touching my shoulder. *yum*

city live is a very cool venue. it has three levels. tania, angus and i watched the bands from the very top level that looked down on the stage, while tom and chaz were down in the mosh pit area.

the support act was a band named mu meson. they were insane! apparently they are from sydney and have been around for like 15 years. they were the perfect fantomas support!

first of all... they had a bum in the band! i'm not sure is he is a permanent member or if they just picked him up off the footpath on the way to the gig. i am leaning toward the latter, i think.

the guy had no idea what was going on. he took all his vocal cues from the other singer. the second vocallist looked like that really bad comedian, maynard, on acid. the drummer looked like a goth chick, but was actually a very effeminate goth boi (angus was perving on him till he realised he was a he). there was a guy playing an instrument i cannot identify. it kinda looked like a bass, only without the body. but it didn't sound like a bass. anyway, he plays with viscious hairy mary and after he took off the bizarre mask he had on i realised he looked like that michael mancini character who was in melrose place.

mu meson played lots of covers. highway to hell was my fav due to the bum's throttle revving hand motions.

shortly after mu meson finished, fantomas appeared on stage and the 3000 strong crowd went mental! the next hour and a half was simply awe inducing, jaw dropping, insane musical genious. OMG! i was even more impressed than i was the last time i saw them! dave lombardo (classically trained jazz drummer, ex slayer) drummed faster than i thought possible. buzz osborne (the melvins) and trevor dunn's (mr bungle) hands were a blur. and mike patton (ex faith no more, mr bungle, peeping tom, tomahawk), well he produced the most indescribable, incredibe sounds with his voice!

i am completely dumbfounded as to how this band play night in, night out. dave lombardo must have biceps of steel. mike patton has got to have the most incredible vocal control to produce the sounds he does, and to not lose his voice each night. he is trully the most underrated vocalist of the past decade. the man produces the most beautiful melodies (yes, the new album actually contains a little melody), then immediately contrasts this with a blood curdling, ear shattering scream, then he will make the most alien clicking sounds. if you listened to them for the first time on cd, you would trully believe the sounds he makes are not produced by a human.

after mike introduced the band as "from cuba!... che guavera on drums! and all the way from boston... li'l bow wow on bass! and! the notooooooriouuuus b.i.g. on guitar!!" they played one more song, came back for an encore, and were gone.

after the gig it appeared that we had lost angus. we could not find him anywhere. we had waited around for about 30-40 minutes and were just talking about leaving when i turned around and spied a huge side show bob style 'fro about 10m away. it was buzz! i exclaimed "OMG! it's buzz!" then realised who was standing with him! "OMGGGGGGGG! MIKE PATTON! tania we have to over there and say something!"

so tania and i made our way over to where the guys were standing. i patted buzz on the shoulder and told him how great i thought the set was and shook his hand. he then thanked tania and i for buying t-shirts. he was really old and ugly. lol. then mike turned toward me. i stuck out my hand and told him how impressed i was with the band. his hand was really soft. he is soooooooo sexy! *reow* even with all that disgusting brill cream in his hair.

so now tania and i have decided to clone mike. we are going to take his dna from my hand and make ourselves a mini mike each. then we will give them accelerated growth hormones so they mature a little quicker. hehe. *reow* some more.

of course, for the next half an hour all i could say was "OMG! i touched mike patton!" i have realised that he is the most famous person i have ever met. he is also one of the musicians i respect most. i have considered thom yorke to be the most creative musical mind in the world for the past few years, but i was wrong. it is mike patton. i have no clue where he gets his ideas from. they are almost too bizarre to be human.

plus he has a commercial outlet for any musical urge that could possibly overcome him. mr bungle is the weird freakish outlet, fantomas is where he channels his insanity, peeping tom will be his mainstream pop avenue, while tomahawk is his rock outfit. and the guy tours/will be touring and records with all these bands. incredible!

ok, well i should probably end this entry now before i start drooling all over the keyboard.
