Quarterly Newsletter September 2008 Well this summer and fall have been extremly busy for us. This fall we say good-bye to Shayna Verhelst who is on maternity leave for the next year while she cares for her new baby boy. We are very happy to have Lee-Anne Newsham take the position of Residential Program Coordinator for this year. House on South Railway Our camping trip to Lake Pelletier was a big hit with this group! Hats off to Lee-Anne who is our camping expert! These guys also went on walks, picnics, picking berries, lots of drives and even a trip out to a farm at harvest where they got to sit in big trucks and tractors. House on Walsh Trail Most of the people in this house also went on an overnight camping trip which was a real hit. Another favorite was the day trip to Moose Jaw. The summer students were a great addition to our staff over the summer. Supported Living Program We have had 2 clents move to our "Inactive" list, which means they don't require regular supports. Congratulations Matthew and Wanda! A few of the guys went on a camping trip this year, a first for this program. Many of the individuals on this program enjoyed time off to visit family and friends. We have a waiting list of individuals who have been accepted onto this program but must wait until we have funds in our budget to provide supports. We continue to make the government aware of our needs. Supported Employment Program We had a very quiet summer with this program and hope to see things pick up in the fall. Cognitive Disabilities Strategy We continue to administer this program for the Swift Current area. We look forward to working with mroe families in the fall. Congnitive Disabilities Strategy We continue to administer this program for the Swift Current area. It is a samll but very worthwile program. Day Program We are very pleased to announce that CLD is now funding us for a 8-space full time community based day program. We started on September 15th and things have been going very well. Thank you to all our community partners who have been so willing to provide a meaningful work and recreational experience for the clients. It is awesome! Lana Empey is our Community Programs Coordinator and she has done an amazing job of getting this program up and running. Affordable Housing Project We were part of a big media release with the Premier of the Province and the Minister of Social Services on hand to make the offical announcement of the start of this project. This is a large investment and a new direction for our agency. We are very excited about the opportunity to serve the community in this way. It will be a very positive move for the individuals who will live in this building. We have several renovations to do so our tenants can move into a clean and fresh apartment.... it will be very exciting! If you are able to receive an electronic version of this letter, please send your email address to us at: swhome@sasktel.net and we will add you to our list Sincerely, Susan Eidem Executive Director, Southwest Homes |
