'port halt Histons winning streak

NEWPORT 1, HISTON 1
By John Hamon of the
Isle of Wight County Press

A BATTLING second-half display from Newport earned them a deserved point and ended Histon's 100 per cent start to the new season.

There could have been a goal for both teams inside the first minute from free kicks. Newport's Danny Hatcher saw his 20-yard effort saved by visiting keeper Lee Hulyer, then Joe McCormack brought off a brilliant finger-tip dive to deny Wayne Goddard from the same distance. In the 26th minute, indecision in the Newport area between defender Jon Holmes and McCormack resulted in a corner. From the resulting flag kick, Louie Farrington headed just wide.

However, in the next minute, Histon took the lead. A cross from Adrian Cambridge was headed back across goal and James ROWE got in front of Pete Tagg to open the scoring.
Histon then got on top and Newport were forced to defend in numbers. Jamie Barker flicked on for Neil Andrews but the Histon skipper shot just over.Rowe and Cambridge both went close before, in the 52nd minute, Newport put together the best move of the match. Good play down the left saw Liam Gearing knock the ball to Hatcher but his shot was brilliantly blocked.

Port began to show their fighting qualities and put the visitors under considerable pressure. Hatcher again went near with a shot following a free kick by Adam Lang.Newport had strong claims for a penalty turned down when Hatcher was clearly impeded by Hulyer. Lee Chudy then found Gearing but the Islander's left-footed shot went agonisingly wide.Histon's advantage was almost doubled but Rowe's effort went over the bar before, in the 81st minute, Newport levelled.

Substitute Ashley Wright was upended after a brilliant turn in the area and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. The ice-cool Gareth KEEPING was rather fortunate with his penalty when it hit Hulyer's legs and crept over the line but it was just reward for a fine second half performance. In the 85th minute, Newport had a real let-off when first Barker smashed a shot against the bar and from the rebound Neil Kennedy saw his effort cannon back off a post, then McCormack did well to save from Neil Coburn.Farrington also had a great chance but shot wide from close range before, five minutes into injury time, Newport thought they had won the three points. A corner from Hatcher was met perfectly by Keeping but the midfielder's header was brilliantly turned over by Hulyer.

"We kept plugging away and got our just rewards," said Newport manager Steve Tate.
"We always had belief in ourselves and controlled the majority of the second half.
"The lads proved today they will be no pushovers this season and, hopefully, we can continue to improve."

Newport Make Hard Work of it at Fareham

ROAD TO CARDIFF - FA CUP 2nd QUALIFYING ROUND

FAREHAM 1, NEWPORT 2

Newport made it difficult for themselves to break down a resolute Fareham before moving into the second qualifying round of the FA Cup against Dr Martens League Premier Division side Tiverton Town.

Newport got off to the perfect start with a goal after six minutes.
A corner by Lee Chudy found Jon HOLMES, who powered in a close-range header. The same combination came close to producing second goal from another corner in the 20th minute but Holmes' header went just over.

From this,  was a matter of minutes before a fluked goal from Peter WOOD who received the ball back from a corner and his floated cross sailed over Newport keeper Dean May, standing in for the holidaying Joe McCormack and into the back of the net.  This inspired Fareham, they  then enjoyed their best spell of the game and put the visitors under pressure. Paul Morby shot over, as did Fuhad Hamado shortly after. Newport were to suffer another scare before the interval Wood broke through the Newport defence but shot wide.

In the 47th minute Taffy Richardson put Gareth Keeping in the clear but his effort was deflected over. Richardson and Chudy then both had shots that went close before Newport had something of a let-off when an unmarked Dave Rowe had a free header from a cross by B. J.Green but somehow missed the target.

Newport responded with saw home keeper Lee Webber do well to keep out a header from Ashley Wright and another attack saw Keeping shot over when well placed. In the 74th minute, Newport at last regain the lead. Substitute Liam Gearing broke down the right and his cross was fumbled by Webber and the ball fell to fellow sub Adam BARSDELL, making his first appearance of the season, who side-footed into an empty net.Gearing should have added a third after a fine move between Barsdell and Hatcher but shot over the bar.

Newport: May, Buckman, Lang, Tagg, Holmes, Richardson, Keeping, Hatcher, O'Rourke, Wright, Chudy.
Subs: Perry, Barsdell, Isaacson, Gearing, Bridges.
King's Lynn  4  Newport IoW    0

Taken from the Eastern Daily Press

King's Lynn starred in their own footballing version of Hurricane Isabel to effortlessly sweep aside one of their Dr Martens Eastern Division promotion rivals. Newport were caught in the eye of a blue-and-gold storm that breached their defence's twice in each half. Dave Staff conjured two quality strikes matched by a couple of flowing passing moves finished by Robbie Harris and Carl Holmes – but the final tally could have been considerably greater.

For just under an hour, Newport struggled to find an answer to the dynamic duo until Jon Holmes wiped out Ndekwe with a bone crunching tackle that earned the defender a yellow card and Ndekwe an early shower nursing a thigh strain. The first half was a stop-start affair, punctuated by some hefty challenges and a refereeing display that did little to help the flow.Three yellows were brandished but the worst incident went unpunished when Jamie March, making his first start since returning to the Linnets, collapsed clutching his face after an off the ball clash with Stephen Richardson. The home side also had strong penalty appeals waved away when Peter Tagg clattered into Ndekwe inside the box.

Lynn wisely settled on the best kind of retribution. With 10 minutes gone Staff opened his account with a free-kick from 25 yards that Senor Beckham would have happily claimed. After Harris was denied by Simon Arthur with his first 'sighter' of the match, Holmes followed up with a snapshot from the edge of the box.The Islanders replied with a solitary free-kick, smacked into the home wall, but were sliced open for the second on 24 minutes – Jack Defty, Harris and Ndekwe exchanging pinball passes before Harris poked home from two yards.

The striker had chances to claim the match ball prior to the break, the pick being a classy pirouette to set up a one-on-one with keeper Arthur, who won the duel with a smothering stop.Danny Hatcher skied a shot in stoppage time to suggest the visitors still carried a threat before Stevie Wilson blocked at the feet of Richardson straight after the restart.

Holmes scuffed a chance to bag the third from Harris' pass before the contest was effectively settled in the 54th minute. Defty, Harris and Ndekwe were again on the same wavelength to tee-up Staff, who rifled home off the underside of the bar.The visitors were treading water by this stage as Lynn threatened to add to the lead with each fresh attack. Richard Woodrow miscued a header from six yards before the fourth came 20 minutes from the end. Again the usual suspects were involved – Defty freeing Harris down the left to set up Holmes to slot in from eight yards.

Morris felt comfortable enough to hand Liam Forshaw his first team debut on 74 minutes. And the 16-year-old was nearly in dreamland when his point-blank header from Staff's corner came back off Arthur's chest – the keeper holding on at the second attempt.

BASHLEY 0, NEWPORT 2

Newport came to match following a 4-0 defeat and must have thought that things couldn’t get any worse until they had to re-adjust their plans having lost to injury Simon Pilcher, ankle, and Liam Gearing, pulled muscle, during the warm-up before the game.  Bashley started brightly and Richard Gillespie got through but Pete Tagg made a great tackle as the home number ten shaped to shoot. Simon Arthur, who was just signed from Bashley, then made a superb diving save to deny Andy Culliford as Bashley were starting to get on top. Moments later saw Tagg cleared off the line from Gillespie.

Newport responded and began playing some neat football and began creating a number of chances. Jamie O'Rourke put Lee Chudy through though couldn’t hit the target and then the same player was desperately unlucky not to score. Newport pressure resulted in a goalmouth scramble, Chudy hammered the ball against the bar. The Islanders saw a great run and cross from Danny Hatcher, the ball fell to CHUDY once more and with a side-step he made no mistake with a left-footed shot.

The second half saw pretty well much of the same, but with the ‘port defending well and always looked dangerous on the break. Chudy almost lobbed the giant Elm but his finger tips saved Bashley going futher behind. A headed clearance from Bashley keeper David Elm only found Gareth Keeping but from 30 yards his shot went agonisingly wide. Newport had a lucky escape in the 65th minute when Auther fumbled and Craig Davis pounced but Adam Barsdell, who had a cracking match, cleared off the line.

In the 71st minute, Newport made sure of the win with a second goal.  Barsdell's corner fell to KEEPING who scored from about 8 yards.

CONGRATULATIONS

HOWES FIRES HOME TIVVY WARNING SHOT
AS O’ROURKE SEALS THE WIN

FA CUP 2ND QUALIFYING ROUND
27TH SEPTEMBER 2003

NEWPORT  2  TIVERTON TOWN  1

Steve Tate started his second year as the ‘port manager as he started the first, with a win.  This time, 9 months after Tiverton Town’s 7-1 mauling of the young Newport side, the youngsters were to repay the faith shown in them by the manager with a gritty and competent FA Cup 2nd Qualifying round win over our Premier League guests at St Georges Park.

As with the 2 previous rounds Newport were to endure spells of pressure from the opposition and Tiverton were to apply this pressure right from the off. The Devon outfit were to signal their intentions within the first 6 minutes, Richard Pears heading wide followed shortly afterward with a shot front former Portsmouth player Jason Rees, which Newport’s Keeper Simon Arther making his home debut, dealt with comfortably.

As the match progressed, Newport were to put the Premier side on to the back foot, after some good play in the midfield, Glen Howes unleashed a powerful shot that went inches wide of the Tiverton goal. The half-hour mark had just been passed as the 'port won a corner, Danny Hatcher took the corner and as it was knocked clear, HOWES standing 30 yards from goal rifled in an unstoppable shot past the motionless Fraser in the Tiverton goal.  The onslaught continued onto the visitors goal, Adam Barsdell put Jamie O’Rourke through and the Newport striker laid the ball to Lee Chudy, Fraser this time making a good save having pushed Chudy wide. Danny Hatcher was to make a great run passing a couple of defenders in the process, his cross was palmed away for a corner. The resulting corner saw Tiverton break clear and a rush onto the Newport goal saw Arther make a vital save, cutting out the pass across his goal, that was destined for on rushing Paul Milsom.

Whilst a few of the 378 crowd were finishing their half-time refreshments in the bar, Danny Hatcher found O’Rourke just inside the Tiverton Halfon the right wing. The Newport striker held the ball up for long enough to lay a pass into the path of Chudy, his diagonal run saw him pass to Barsdell. The Islander’s defence splitting first time pass, was connected by O’ROURKE who beat Fraser with a shot into the keepers bottom right corner of the net. The crowd went wild.

The crowd's joy was short lived as within two minutes Tiverton hit back. Jamie Mudge, the Tiverton substitute collected a throw-in, his cross found PEARS who shot low past
the Newport glovesman.  Newport could have buckled at this point and any thoughts of December 17th were soon banished from the minds of  the Newport faithful, as the ‘port pressed forward in hopes of regaining the brief but welcome two goal cushion that they once had. Adam Lang was to shape up for one of his trademark  free-kick’s, after a foul 3 yards from the Tivvy penalty area on Howes who was brought down as he was head for goal. The goal bound effort was deflected for a corner.

The Devon side were to push forward with desperation, the thought of losing the Ł3,750 prize that was on offer to the winner of this tie, saw them leave  the defence a man short and so  Newport were able  to continue to press the Tiverton goal at every opportunity. Jamie O’Rourke again, was to put Chudy through, having beat the joint challenge of Fraser and one of his defenders, Chudy’s shot with his weaker right foot went agonisingly wide of the empty net.

The tackles were now  flying in and during this intense period of the match, a clash between Hatcher and Winter saw yellow cards for the pair of them. Tiverton had two chance’s  to get level on The first on 74 minutes  saw Chenoweth’s cross finding the unmarked David Steele and his close range header went well wide of the Newport net. The Newport keeper was then called into action 6 minutes later when Jamie Mudge sent a header goal-wards but the impressive home debutante tipped over brilliantly. The Islanders had a chance in the dying minutes to finally  finish off Tiverton, Gareth Keeping getting past  the scrambling Fraser, only to see his shot cleared off  the line.

After the match a delighted Steve Tate said “ Whilst its great to win against a side like Tiverton, it’s the league that I want us to do well in, though to be honest its nice to have a break from it now and again”
