Phuket
For the winter holidays, Ryota and I spent  about two weeks exploring the white sand beaches and limestone cliffs of the Andaman coast.  I was feeling a bit disapointed about missing out on yet another family Christmas.  The turkey, the snow, the PRESENTS....
Well, we did what we could to create a festive mood.  We found a lovely potted plant to transform into a Christmas tree and played carols until our ears bled.
...because sometimes we have to live it like it's fabulous.
Our first stop for the Christmas holidays was the famous Phuket Island.  Long a favourite of tourists the world over, Phuket has plenty to see and do and managed to keep us busy for several days.  The restaurants were a refreshing change of pace from the outdoor food stalls where we normally eat.  Indeed, we devoted a lot of time to the pursuit of eating.  Eating, talking about eating, being sick from eating, etc.  Phuket is justly famous for its fabulous seafood, but we didn't restrict ourselves to local fare.  There are lots of great Thai restaurants on the island, but when Thai is your usual daily fare, Swedish and Italian dishes have big appeal !

Aside from eating, we also dedicated ourselves to beach-bumming.  This is Kata beach, where we stayed.
The most famous (notorious?) beach in Phuket is Patong.  This is where it all happens, baby.  If you want you Starbucks and lots of shopping, Patong does not disappoint.  I haven't seen Patong during the high season, but I have heard that it can be a little hairy.  We went as the low season was winding up, and it seemed to be the perfect time to be there. Lots of discounts and uncrowded beaches.
The Now here's the rub: a peaceful day at the beach means sleeping on chaise lounges and drinking beers and getting burnt to a crisp.  You will laugh, but let me confess that I had NO idea that you could get burned lying in the shade under a parasol.  I was not in the sunlight at all, and check out that burn!
