The Characters
The Higher Chain of Command:
Major Matthew Elliot
Just an ordinary, quiet little glorifed cannon fodder soldier working for the most powerful man in the military. Until I got my hands on him that is. Constantly near a nervous breakdown, prone to occasional "hazy" patches and the proud owner of the worst hand-eye coordination in recorded history; Elliot never wanted to be a soldier. But, after a night involving too much tequila, he woke up and found himself in the army. He's not too fond of it, but just hasn't got around to quitting yet. Has always worried about Hein's state of mind; more so in recent weeks. However, it's sometimes difficult to concentrate on someone else's problems when you're losing grip on your own sanity.
General Douglas Hein
Once a scowling obsessive willing to do anything to be rid of the phantom scourge, now a happily babbling shadow of the man he once was. Certain events (and certain anti-depressant drug combinations) have finally taken their toll on our dear general, who seems more than content to inadvertantly make Elliot's life a living hell. Currently banned from ever allowing chocolate, alcohol or super anti-depressant Dihuldrin past his lips, Hein doesn't deal with addictive substances well. You thought he was obsessive before; try prying a half-scoffed bar of candy out of his hands. Probably completely mad, but has no chance of being replaced at this point in time - the council can't be bothered thinking of an alternative.
Major Reese Hershey
She may seem cute, innocent and completely sane on the outside, but inside lurks a heart of... Well, let's just say she's a tad twisted. Brought in occasionally to temp as Hein's second in command when Elliot has one of his "hazy" spells, Hershey is a fine, upstanding human being. But then she comes off duty and all hell breaks loose. Her incredibly cute nose and innocent smile can get her out of any kind of trouble - as long as she's in trouble with a male of the species. She has a few "interesting" hobbies and a crazed obsession with a certain soldier. Elliot tries to stay away from her as much as possible, but once she wiggles that nose...
The Deep Eyes:
Captain Gray Edwards
Tall, dark, handsome, noble... And completely sickening. Gray is the poster boy for the army; "Be all you can be" is his motto. He looks pretty, he looks after his squad, he's smart. Hell, he even helps the old lady next door take out her garbage. But everyone has their evil streak and Gray is no different. His alter ego is "El Diablo" - the mysterious prankster who'll stop at nothing to make the higher officers look bad. It all started with an innocent box of spiked candy bars, but El Diablo has bigger, brighter, more dangerous ideas...
Sergeant Ryan Whittaker
Another brave, noble one. Ryan is so loyal it's painful. He'll do anything for his captain, his squad, his country, his world. He'll always be the first to protect someone else, and will gladly give his little life for someone else. He's always in the background, waiting to be useful. In fact, that's what he hates; forever being stuck in the shadow of the cuter, more reckless, higher ranked Gray. Ryan may be willing to do anything to help his captain, but he always looks out for opportunities to take that shiny badge for himself. If it means making Gray have an uhh... "accident" then so be it.
Corporal Jane Proudfoot
Gung-ho is probably the best way to describe Jane. Gung-ho and a tad jealous. Will career into a fight regardless of who her enemy is or whether she's outnumbered because the rest of the squad don't want to be killed. She gets possessive very easily; touch her gun and expect to have a few bones broken. She also hates it when another female "intrudes" on her "territory". Though she'll never admit it, she likes the fact she's got three strapping (alright, two strapping and one slightly weedy) male soldiers around her all the time. So when Aki makes an appearance, she makes an enemy. And trust me, you do not want Jane as an enemy.
Corporal Neil Fleming
The only man who can have a fanatical following of girls he doesn't know, and yet have every girl he does know hate him. Neil is a geek; there's no way around it. He's not happy unless he's taking apart some vital piece of equipment, making it "better" and then putting it back together. He longs for a girlfriend, but alas his geekiness always gets in the way. He's also discovered that being a soldier does not pay well, and he's been forced to get another job; moonlighting at the most popular bar on base. Of course, he's managed to hide this from his squad-mates for some time now - after all, having them find out exactly what he does might be an embarrassment - but every secret is just waiting to be discovered...
The Scientists:
Dr Aki Ross
After being given that ever-so-expensive hair by those lovely programmers, Aki seems to have taken her looks to heart. Forever preening, "doing her hair" or generally making herself look good, she doesn't have much time for science anymore. Oh sure, she'll turn up to the lab to "supervise" everyone else, but when it gets down to it she just won't do the dirty work anymore. She's more worried about breaking a nail than saving the planet, but her narcissistic ways have made her a hit with the men. Content with being the one feminine woman on the scene, Aki and her pretty face is not happy when Hershey appears; flashing her cute nose and innocent smile. Maybe she won't do anything strenuous for the planet, but for revenge?
Dr "NoFirstName" Sid
Sid is definitely one smart cookie. Creating the barriers, thinking of the Gaia theory and searching for spirit waves is pretty good for someone who should have retired years ago. Years of common sense have stopped him from going completely crazy like everyone else, and at times he appears to be the only person in touch with reality. If you're in trouble, you can always rely on Sid to appear and either save you or make wisecracks about your predicament. And hey, we can't just leave the old guy out, can we?
