("Widespread torture and ill-treatment", par.2)

Amnesty International has been concerned at dozens of reports that women, in particular human rights activists and female relativies of suspected opposition members or supporters, have suffered cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment at the hands of law enforcement officials, including in detention, for the purpose of forcing them to reveal the whereabouts of or to incriminate male relatives.

Department of State
(section 1.f., par.1)

Security agencies routinely monitored telephone calls and employed surveillance and wiretaps in the cases of persons involved in opposition political activities (see Sections 1.d. and 4).

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
(page 1, par. 1)

According to the report, the police and security forces continued to use torture, harassment, illegal searches and wiretaps, and arbitrarily detained or arrested opposition activists and other citizens on false charges.
