Possible MSCI stocks (source: The Star 14/3/00)
The Star 13/3/00 - Last Friday, the market was abuzz with speculation of an early reinstatement of Malaysia in the MSCI owing to the resolution of the CLOB impasse. But Morgan Stanley quickly quashed such hopes saying it would stick to the May deadline. Malaysia's reinstatement in the MSCI will come with the inclusion of many new counters and the exclusion of some stocks contained in the previous list. TA Securities Bhd head of Research Francis Tan expects the foreign weightage on Malaysian securities would be more than the targeted 10% after the inclusion in the MSCI. Currently foreign institutional funds' weightage on Malaysia stocks was 4% but the benchmark was 10%. Many research houses expect about RM15billion to RM20billion worth of foreign money to flow back into the stockmarket before May 31. These funds may be short, medium to long term in nature.
