"Techno the Hedgehog" stars characters from across the Sonic universe. Here's a review of everyone you'll meet along the way:
Techno the Hedgehog Beta
The star of the game. Techno Beta was the second Sonic clone created by GUN, in their attempt to stop Eggman from getting the Master Emerald. His outside appearance is identical to Sonic's, except he has a green hue instead of blue. It's not clear whether Techno is some sort of robot (like Techno Alpha), a scientifically-created lifeform (like Shadow), or an ordinary hedgehog that was implanted with bionic limbs. His only flaw is that he can't execute Sonic's trademark move, the Spin Dash. However, he has two extra attacks to make up for it: the Hoverboard and the Ring Shockwave. Techno can glide short distances using a technlogically-advanced "hoverboard", or shoot Power Rings from his body, destroying any robots in the area.
Shadow the Hedgehog
Created by Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik aboard Space Colony fifty years ago, Shadow was first seen as a threat to GUN. He was nearly killed by GUN and has always been bitter toward them, but in this game they've finally made a truce and now occasionally even work together. Shadow never ages, because he's a robot or something. He has a special attack called "Chaos Control", in which he uses the power of the Chaos Emeralds (or in this case, Super Emeralds) to freeze time or teleport himself short distances.
Shadow and Sonic teamed up to stop the evil BioLizard from destroying the earth, but have always had a bit of a rivalry. However, now that Sonic's gone missing, Shadow's ready to put aside their differences to find him.
Shadow meets Techno along the way, and makes numerous appearances in the game.
Amy Rose
The creepy girl who's head over heels for Sonic, Amy's always trying to find ways to force him to marry her. She too is looking for Sonic, but just seems to get in everyone's way. Amy has a bit of a crush on Techno as well, because of his close resmblance to a certain blue hedgehog...
Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles is the guardian of the Master Emerald, and always has to keep it safe on Floating Island, because without its power, the island would fall into the sea. He gets his name from his spiky knuckles, which he can use to climb walls and dig into the ground. Knuckles can also glide short distances, similar to Techno's hoverboarding ability.
Knuckles is more than happy to help Techno and Shadow find Sonic, and even stars in the level Sky Attack.
Tails
This twin-tailed fox has been alongside Sonic since the days of Sonic 2. His full name is Miles Prower, but he has earned the nickname "Tails" for obvious reasons. He can spin his two tails like a propeller, to attain flight or Sonic-like speed. Tails is also a bit of a genius, with skills rivaling those of Eggman. His most famous invention is the Tornado, a biplane commonly used by Sonic. Later in the game, Tails lends the Tornado to Techno to help him catch up with Eggman.
Techno the Hedgehog Alpha
Meet the original version of our green hedgehog hero. Alpha was the first Sonic clone created by GUN, but was deemed unusuable due to his clunky robotic body, and dumped in the antarctic wasteland. Now he wants revenge, and who better to take it out on that his "little brother", Techno Beta?
Chaos
A mysterious water monster... thing. In Sonic Adventure, he turns evil and uses the negative power of the Chaos Emeralds to become a gigantic monster called Perfect Chaos, but he's now a warmhearted guy again. Until Eggman steals the Master Emerald, that is. You see, Chaos shows up whenever something really bad's about to happen to the Master Emerald, and destroys everything in his path until it's safe again -- and that includes Techno.
Oh, and in case you're wondering: yes, the Chaos Emeralds are named after him.
Dr. Eggman
The big, bad egghead himself, Dr. Ivo Robotnik (otherwise known as Dr. Eggman) has always been Sonic's sworn nemesis. He has an IQ of 300, and is constantly building robots (called "Badniks") and coming up with new schemes for world domination. His most recent plan is to take advantage of Sonic's disappearance to get all seven Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald, so he can become the most powerful being alive. However, Eggman also seems to have a hand in Sonic's disappearing act, and knows the very dark secret behind it all...
Sonic the Hedgehog
Well, here he is -- the star of every Sonic game ever created (obviously). He can move faster than the speed of sound, and is always running somewhere. He has a very low tolerance for evil... especially Dr. Eggman. Sonic's always stopping Eggman's evil creations, whether it's the planet-sized "Death Egg" or his treacherous robot copy, Metal Sonic. But now that Sonic's missing, everything looks bleak... until GUN makes Techno and -- oh, you already know that whole story.
Sonic can use the positive power of the Chaos Emeralds to turn into a super-powered, invincible hero, Super Sonic. In this form, Sonic's blue body turns gold, and he becomes even faster and stronger. However, if he were to ever use the negative power of the Emeralds to transform, he would become the evil Dark Sonic...
Guardian Unit of Nations
GUN is a top-secret military force that was formed to protect earth from the forces of evil. Fifty years ago, they found out that Dr. Gerald Robotnik had created Shadow, and felt the hedgehog to be a threat to the planet. So they stormed in Space Colony (the giant, moon-shaped space station Gerald and Shadow were living in), and attempted to kill him. Shadow escaped to earth, but was captured by GUN operatives and locked in stasis for fifty years. After being freed with the help of Eggman, Shadow wanted revenge on GUN, but the events of this game take place long after a truce has been made and peace has been restored.
After Sonic disappears, GUN makes Techno Alpha and Techno Beta, yadayadayada... you know drill by now...
GUN's main appearance was in Sonic Adventure 2, and they seem to rely heavily on robots and technology, like Eggman. However, unlike Eggman, GUN has always fought for good.
