The
Piccadilly line opened in 1906 between Hammersmith and Finsbury Park
with a branch between Holborn and Aldwych added in 1907. The
branch to Aldwych has a lot of interest surrounding it, and this is
examined elsewhere on this site. An extension to Cockfosters
opened in 1933 and the line was the first tube system in the world
to be connected with it's city airport in 1977 when the Piccadilly
reached Heathrow. Heathrow Terminal Five station is due to
open in 2007. The line also holds the record for the shortest
distance between two stations... 0.16 miles between Covent Garden
and Leicester Square. The Piccadilly is home to many of the
networks disused stations, including York Road, which was closed in
1932, Aldwych, which closed in 1994, Brompton Road and Down Street,
which housed Winston Churchill's underground headquarters during
World War Two. The Piccadilly line carried 201.8 million
passengers in 2000, and Piccadilly Circus is the lines busiest
station. The line covers some 44 route miles and in total,
serves 52 stations. 76 trains are needed to run this busy and
important line at peak periods.
