#1 Garden Warriors (Rammers)

The #1 ranked team at the start of the IICC.  They've proven that they deserve their high ranking and currently sit atop the Nordic Division.  They are definitely one of the strongest teams in the IICC and one of the teams expected to win it all.  One look at everything they've accomplished and you'd soon see, these Warriors mean business.  They learned in the early stages of divisional play not to take anyone lightly when they, along with the rest of the IICC were shocked with a loss to the Lulea Wildcats.  They've learned from this past mistake and vow to not only avenge the loss, but to not under-estimate anyone for the rest of the tournament.

Accomplishments: (as of 03/25/04) (Division 5-1-1-1)
Elite Cup Winner, 2 Champions Shields, Beer Cup, 2 Super Cups, World Cup, 8 League Cups, 8 Playoff Cups
Team Name Origin: (his words again)
The teams was originally called Penn Station Warriors and started out playing street hockey near Madison Square Garden in New York. This was in 1999. After a few seasons we thought it was time to hit the ice and join a beer league. We checked around for a few months and found that the only one willing to accept our application was Senior League Hockey.

We came up with the super idea of challenging the New York Rangers into a street hockey game. When they finally accepted in November 2002, we demanded that if we won the game, we should be awarded to play our SLH home games in their practice rink. And since we totally kicked their butts - we had found ourselves a - temporarily - home ground. Our ultimate goal was no less than to become the most entertaining hockey team in New York, and like the Rangers, play our home games in Madison Square Garden.

We joined SLH in the 2002-03 season, when there was an opening in C5-L3-D1. Norwegian Ronnie Miller (rammers) was appointed team manager. This was the first season on Iggy and we started out with 20 games left of the season. We made another bet with the Rangers - they just laughed and said - “yeah right… if you sad excuse for a hockey team, get yourselves promoted into League 2 and winning the playoffs the first season - we will make sure that you lot will warm-up for us in the Garden from season 2003-04. Ha-ha-ha, that was a good one”.

But we didn’t start our SLH career so hot… We tied the #16 ranked team in the opener and then lost our next two games. What to do? Well, since we were lucky enough to get 2000 credits when joining, we could afford some fresh blood. The team was lacking skills in every department, but the manager decided that the best way to spend the credits; was to invest some of it in one new player and uses the rest of the money for some serious pub-crawling. The manager had one of his best moments and got the bright idea - “if we always score more goals than the other team, we should be able to win a few games sooner or later…”.

So the 37-year old Doctor Feelgood, with 70 in shooting skill was picked up from the waiver market for the minimum bid of 800 credits. And little did we now, that when he was put into the #4 slot in our roster, we had hit the jackpot. The next game was against Oslo Kings, who soon enough became our long lasting division rivals on the way up the pyramid system. Doctor Feelgood was flying high and scored all our goals in a stunning 5-4 OT win.

And with the puck-hog Feelgood in the team we had an amazing streak and ended up with a 17-2-1 record that first season. That was good enough to claim 2nd place and promotion. The Warriors cruised through the playoff and grabbed the cup with a sensational 11-0 victory in the final. And when lifting the trophy - the players and fans went completely bananas - chanting “we are the champions, we are the GARDEN WARRIORS!

Doc Feelgood recorded 120 goals in 20 games that first season. And since he was often double-shifted, he soon dressed in jersey #44. Doc had a long and superb career with the team - he played 8th full seasons and scored 1259 goals in 360 games. The #44 jersey is retired.
Coach Says: (actually his words)
After that first season and the promotion to 5-2-4, the Warriors have never looked back. We won both division and playoff 7 times in a row and were promoted to the top level - division 1 premier - before last season. And we clinched the league 1 division 1 title as well in or first outing with the big boys. But was soon to feel the pressure at the top of the pyramid, when we got a good beating at the hands of Nutbush Warriors in the playoff final.

Over the years the team have had some great profiles and has always been pretty well balanced. During the first seasons our main goal were to get good enough to take on and give the best pre-update team on the server, Animated Jokers/Schmed a good fight for their money. Schmed and I started the first ex games tourney on this server, the Iggy Cup, back in 2005-06. The Jokers was totally untouchable, and won the 3 back-to-back Iggy Cups before Schmed left SLH, midway through season 2008-09 (the first season after the update). My Warriors were lucky enough to break the Jokers unbeaten streak of 50-something tough tourney ex games, at the end of Iggy Cup 3.

The Warriors had finally become a force to fear and watch out for. We played four Iggy Cups before retiring after season 2009-10. Our Iggy Cup record is 3-x-2-2-1. And season 2009-10 was an especially good one for the Warriors and their manager. Garden Warriors “stole” all the silverware on Iggy that season; winning the Champions Shield & Elite Cup, Beer Cup, Super Cup, Division & Playoffs, Iggy Cup, clinching no.1 position on the ex games standings and their boss also became the no.2 manager of the year.

After this “monster” season a few veterans and star players seemed to have forgot the team motto “no player is bigger than the team itself”. So even with a team more “stacked” than ever last season, we lost some edge and the team has had some ups and downs. It seemed like the players didn’t “click” anymore. Several key players were also hitting the 7-career limit, so the manager decided to start a much-needed re-building process.

Just recently the Warriors seems to have something good going on again, so we are really looking forward to the rest of the IICC tournament. There are several dangerously talented teams in this tourney, but the Warriors surely have room for a new cup in the trophy case…
