Apollo Cafe - Brady Street

This is the last place I "dined out." Don't know that I should call it dining out, as the atmosphere is casual, bus your own table, almost "fast food" kind of place, but the quality of the food is amazing, and the decor is just beautiful. Soft earthy tones, a touch of Greek gold, ceiling painted with clouds, lots of windows for people-watching. Simple but interesting tables, nice open atmosphere, plenty of seating, and very friendly service (the owner is usually running the register).

Per dad's advice, I've gotten the same thing every time I've been there. The Vegetarian Combo, which, for $5.50, is really hard to beat for the quality of food. A fresh Greek salad - dressing on the side - with big chunks of feta (easy on the onions, though!!), warm pita bread, 2 small rice-stuffed grape leaves which are unique in such a casual place and I can never keep from eating first. Finally, a slice of what is possibly the spinach pie I've ever had!! Flaky but tender filo dough crust that you can cut with a fork, filled with the most perfect blend of spinach and feta!!  If I had my way (I never do), I'd have less salad and more of the other stuff, but... :-) I took my dad to the Apollo one night when we were heading to the symphony but running out of time for a "good" dinner. I said "I know just the place!" We got in, were served very quickly (dad had a HUGE slab of lamb that he was very impressed and overwhelmed with, for a minimal price). We were able to eat somewhat leisurely and made it to the symphony with plenty of time.
