Mykono’s Gyros and Cafe Van Buren Street

Mykono’s Gyros and Cafe (pronounced MEE ko nos) – Don’t let the word café fool you. This is fast food, Greek style, a step or two up from “cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger!” Not a place to sit and dine leisurely while reading… This is a nice open space with quite a few tables situated pretty closely together. It was a little loud at times, especially when order numbers are called out. There’s a pretty Greek coastal landscape painted along the entire north wall. (They also have an outside wall painted for al fresco seating in the summertime.) You order at the counter, and wait for your number to be called. Dine-in is served on the typical plastic tray/plastic basket. I got carry out. Veggie Pita, no onions, no olives (I know – what is the POINT!?!?! It’s Greek food! Sorry.). Nothing too difficult, and it was pretty yummy, huge, and messy. Wonderfully large and fresh pita with big hunks of slightly salty feta, fresh tomatoes, lettuce, some green pepper, and great gyro sauce (is there a name for that?) to pour (lightly) on. Definitely not the type of food you order in the early stages of a relationship!! :o) It was all over the place. Fries were the "regular" kind (not steak fries or wedges) that have a little bit of skin still on ‘em, and they were abundant. (I didn’t need fries, but I had a cold I believe in feeding a cold!!) Total was about $6.75 (sans drink) which wasn’t that bad. But for quick, cheap, Greek, and unique, Apollo Cafe wins.
