Best Video (joint winners, presented in no order): Must Be Dreaming by Corn_Child (Award) Serenity/Firefly - gen/character study - River Obsessive24: This vid is a revelation, with breathtaking editing and beautiful movement (both internal and external) all the way through. I love the physical representations in visuals to match particular points in the audio, such as entering atmo at 0:06, the somersault at 0:46, the flaring of lights at 1:37 or the turn at 1:50. Image masks/effects are utilised beautifully and it is a touching look into River's character and motivations, particularly with the incorporation of Firefly footage. Txlsplash: An absolutely wonderfully edited video that provides insight into River's character while being extremely enjoyable to watch! The clips of River from the beginning that are interspersed throughout the bar fight scene are beautifully arranged with the music. I especially like at 1:20, the clips inside the screen, and the Firefly clips that intermittently show up throughout the last bit from 2:24 to 3:02 are brilliantly placed. The clips at 3:27 are very impressive. Final Fantasy by Zero Nephilim (Award) Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - gen/action Obsessive24: This is an amazingly well-edited video, and everything is rendered with pinpoint precision. I particularly liked the pacing and the meticulous attention to internal movement, even in the extremely fast-paced action sequences. I particularly liked the "brushes" effect, for example starting at 0:46. It's an innovative touch and looked beautiful. 2:07 is another personal favourite moment, though it was very hard to pick out specific details from a vid full of incredible moments! Txlsplash: One of the best videos I have ever seen. The editing goes perfectly with the music (and the music is great itself). The footage is beautiful and is utilized extremely well throughout. There are so many segments that I love, so I'll just list a few of them here: I'd say my favorite part is Cloud's strut at 1:34 (how could anyone not like that strut? Plus it works perfectly with the music there). The beginning is wonderful with the buildup of the music, and then it being shot off into the sky. The segment with Aeris starting at 0:46 is beautiful, and again at 2:06. I love the red bars at 3:12 and the huge buildup that follows. I could keep going... *** Best Action: Final Fantasy by Zero Nephilim (Award) Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - gen/action Reviewed above. Best Action Runner Up: We Want Your Soul by Martouf Marty (Award) Stargate Atlantis - action/humour Obsessive24: I love the off-beat cutting! The vid is very fun to watch, and what I love about the comedy is that the scenes aren't usually intrinsically funny; you made them funny through the constant clever lyric-clip matches, and I felt that really went to the heart of comedic vidding. The ending made me laugh out loud. There's also really great internal motion - I particularly liked 1:17, 1:51 and 1:53, but there are many more similar moments all through and really shows the amount of effort you put into this vid. Txlsplash: A very well edited and funny video. The lyrics really drive it forward, using smart and imaginative matches with the video footage. The action clips add a lot to the flow of the video. The ending to the video was unique and effective. *** Best Mood Piece: Ever After by Becky (Award) Smallville - character study - Lex Obsessive24: The mood and colour effects are gorgeous. It's always lovely to see instrumentals done well, and this was an absolute joy to watch, with lovely editing and great internal motion all through. The slow-burning tension is carried out fluidly, and I loved the seamless comparisons and contrasts through various stages of character development. The voiceover added a lot of depth and rounded the vid off beautifully. A fantastic and chilling character study. Txlsplash: An excellent character study with a very creepy tone, giving the video a dreamy feeling. The clips used are excellent and beautiful. The delayed overlay effect used in many of the clips makes it seem unreal. I really liked how the clips gave the video an angry and confused feeling. The clips of Lex in the rain are very effective in setting the mood. I love the dialogue at the end, and how screaming clips showing raw emotions are used in between. Best Mood Piece Runner Up: Don't Cry by Foomatic (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - tearjerker/shipper - Willow/Tara Reviewed below. *** Best Narrative: Don't Cry by Foomatic (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - tearjerker/shipper - Willow/Tara Obsessive24: This is a beautiful and heartbreaking shipper vid. I love how the music offset the visuals, it caught some of the most amazing emotional moments such as the sequence beginning at 2:11. The overlays are gorgeous, especially in the interlaced shots toward the end. Txlsplash: A beautiful look at Willow and Tara's relationship. There are some very nice effects and cuts to the beat. I especially like the black and white clips at 1:48 before the chorus kicks in and at 2:57. Also, the effect where with Willow's red eyes at 2:22. I love the effect used at 4:00 with the black and white flashing clips. Best Narrative runner up: Jupiter by Elvira (Award) Lord of the Rings - AU/narrative - story of Eowyn Obsessive24: Clip choice is consistently gorgeous in this vid, and the colouring really made for a beautiful mood. The AU setting is extremely convincing and I loved the time taken in using atmospheric shots, such as the sequence at 1:30. Txlsplash: The scene is set beautifully in this video, and the clips flow together in a very coherent way. There are some lovely shots throughout the video, such as the flowers at 1:43 which really add to the story. *** Best Shipper: Don't Cry by Foomatic (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - tearjerker/shipper - Willow/Tara Reviewed above. Best Shipper Runner Up: Too Lost in You by yorkshirewench (Award) Hornblower - shipper - Horatio/William Obsessive24: This vid was masterful in arranging a selection of incidental footage to make an engaging and convincing slash shipper. The song choice, though a little surprising at first, ended up working very well in context. I especially liked the clip choice at 1:03, it was very evocative. The sequence starting at 2:39 is particularly lovely. Txlsplash: The clips and music are put together in such a way to make the relationship seem convincing. It doesn't seem like the footage has a lot of suggestive clips, so keeping the video seeming real is impressive. *** Best Insight (joint winners, presented in no order): Must Be Dreaming by Corn_Child (Award) Serenity/Firefly - gen/character study - River Reviewed above. Ever After by Becky (Award) Smallville - character study - Lex Reviewed above. *** Best Overview: Doesn't Remind Me by Ryan (Award) Angel/Buffy the Vampire Slayer - general Obsessive24: The thing that struck me most about this vid is how well the clip-lyric matches lined up. Some are context-based while others are cheekily literal, and really showed off an in-depth knowledge of source material. A lot of intuitive confidence comes through in the editing, and I particularly liked the build-up of pace and emotion in the bridge with the guitar solo. Txlsplash: Wonderfully edited! The video encompasses so many aspects of both Buffy and Angel, and it's a great reminder of why I love both shows. I especially like the segment starting at 3:42, with all of Angel's alleyway experiences. I like the part starting at 2:50, because it highlights so many great characters. Best Overview Runner Up: We Want Your Soul by Martouf Marty (Award) Stargate Atlantis - action/humour Reviewed above. *** Awards for Excellence Awarded to videos that did not win awards in the conventional categories, but both judges thought were outstanding. Presented in no order. Anxiety by Shoopdancer (Award) Tru Calling - general - season 2 Obsessive24: This is a great overview of the season, with thematic/plot elements presented in neat, ordered sections. Excellent cutting to an unconventional beat pattern. I particularly liked how you cut between two shots to compare and contrast between different agendas and plot points, such as the Carrie sequence at 1:30, or the Jenson sequence at 1:58. Txlsplash: I really enjoyed seeing the lovely rivalry between Jack and Tru established in this video. I liked how many different characters were highlighted in the video. The black and white flashes at 1:00 were well placed. Play Dead by Little Heaven (Award) Firefly - character study - River Obsessive24: A insightful look into the character. Gorgeous use of overlay effects, you really brought the "play dead" idea to life and I loved how beat-oriented it was. I particularly enjoyed 1:17 and 2:21. The "city of fear" lyric match is excellent - the two shots you used for it brought out the themes extremely clearly. I also loved the walking sequence starting at 0:43. Txlsplash: Very nice look into River, with lots of great effect used. I like the zoom overlays that come up often. River's dancing at 1:51 goes very well with the music, especially when it slows down at 1:53. My favorite part is at 2:01, with the beautiful shot of River through the grate, and the overlay works beautifully. Alone and Colder by Anne (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel - character study - Faith Obsessive24: This vid has a beautiful mood, and I really liked the old-school clean style of cutting with minimal effects. I love the movement at 0:47, and the ensuing shot of the blood is incredibly evocative, as is the shot with the sheet at 1:36. I especially loved how you managed to get multiple beat-oriented internal motion within one clip, like the shot with the blood, or the shot starting at 0:54. Txlsplash: I really loved the tone of this video, I thought it fit perfectly for a creepy Faith video. The dream sequences worked with the music in a wonderful way. I love the buildup at 1:35. The shot at 1:48 of Faith in the red jacket goes very well with the lyrics, as does the shot at 2:20. *** Awards for Achievement in Vidding Judges' picks from videos that did not win awards in the above categories. Presented in no order. Obsessive24's Picks: Ding Dong by Shazzer (Award) General Hospital - character study - Carly I loved the fast cutting between stills at the start, and the irony in the clip/lyric associations, especially the sequence starting at 1:16. Lovely on-beat editing. One Sweet Day by Uruviel (Award) Lost - character study - Shannon I really enjoyed the clean cutting in this, and how it was arranged into two distinct sections thematically. The music was very appropriate and the POV changes in particular were handled extremely well. Txlsplash's Picks: Bliss by Queen Selqet31 (Award) Stargate Atlantis - general/action - first half of season 2 The great thing about this video is that it manages to stay interesting, even though it is very long, by varying the effects and editing. The space action clips and the ground battles are scattered throughout the video, and keep the video engaging. I like the effect used at 2:26. |
