Categories Vidding is an interactive process, and we don't believe in drawing largely arbitrary distinctions. Therefore we have very few categories. The following criteria will be taken into consideration when judging all videos, regardless of which category it is being considered for: the concept, structure, cutting, pace, movement, selection of clips, use of effects, use of song, emotional resonance (if applicable), and anything else that helps define vidding as a medium. Inasmuch as we can, we will not judge on the merits of the original footage, our knowledge of the fandom, or our own taste in music. If you would like to know more about the judging process, there are additional notes here. Best Video: Awarded to the most outstanding video in each round. Best Action: Awarded to the most outstanding action video. To qualify for this category, there must be substantial action sequences in the vid as opposed to the use of individual action shots. Action is defined as fighting, combat, explosions, etc. Fast-moving/shaky camerawork and/or quick cutting styles do not constitute action in themselves. Best Mood Piece: Awarded to the most outstanding video that focuses on creating a certain mood. This includes (but is not confined to) tearjerker, comedy, angst and nostalgia. Please note that we judge mainly on vidder input into the mood, not the source itself. For example, a "bloopers vid" might be very funny, but it needs very little vidder input in order to be funny, and we take that into account when judging. Best Narrative: Awarded to the most outstanding video that focuses on telling a coherent story, be it canon or AU. Best Shipper: Awarded to the most outstanding video that deals with a particular couple, be it conventional, unconventional or slash. This category may also include studies of an unhealthy or destructive relationship, as long as it is intended to be romantic/sexual in nature and mostly portrayed in a positive light (updated September 2006). If in doubt whether a vid qualifies for this category, we will look to the vidder's intention as to whether a romantic pairing was meant to be portrayed. Best Insight: Awarded to the most outstanding video that is a character study or relationship study (including but not confined to romantic relationships). Updated August 2006: Judges will determine which vids qualify for this category, a vid will not qualify simply by virtue of being character-based. Best Overview (TV fandoms only): Awarded to the most outstanding video that gives a comprehensive overview of the fandom, a particular season or plot arc. and Special Awards for Excellence: Awarded to videos that do not win awards in the conventional categories, but both judges think are outstanding and deserve special recognition. Special Awards for Achievement in Vidding: Judges' picks from videos that do not win awards in the above categories.
