Best Video: Californication by Sweetie (Award) LOST - general - season 1 Obsessive24: What a wonderful overview of the whole season. The vid is extremely well-edited, and you demonstrate great confidence in applying effects to drive your point home. I was especially impressed by the adept lyric matches to the clips. My favourite is the "control the population" line, followed by "Cobain can you hear the spheres". I especially loved the way you focused on each character subplot in turn, and brought them all together toward the end. My favourite bits were the shaky effect to the drum fill at 1:00, the split-second compare-and-contrast frame of Boone at 1:45, the close up of Sawyer at 2:09, and the transition between the two clips at 3:27. A fabulous vid all around! Txlsplash: An amazingly well edited Lost video. I am thoroughly impressed with Sweetie for managing to fit so many different aspects of season 1 in such a short time without making everything seem rushed. That's very difficult to do, and it was executed brilliantly. The lyric-clip matches are also excellent (the song and the show are difficult to match, but it was pulled off very well). The effects used are powerful and well-placed. I really like the segment at 1:03, with the zooming-in shot of Walt throwing the knife. This is a very strong overview video of the season, seamlessly going from beginning to end. Best Video Runner Up: The War is Over by dragonchic (Award) Spider-Man 1 & 2 - general/action Reviewed below. *** Best Action: The War is Over by dragonchic (Award) Spider-Man 1 & 2 - general/action Obsessive24: I love the fast-paced cutting in this vid, especially the jump cuts in the sequences starting around 0:32, and again in the running sequence at 0:42. The action is fabulously timed, with great dynamics, movement and lyric matches. I especially loved the intercutting of the two scenes at 1:14, the "eyes are haunted" moment at 1:37, and again at 2:25. A wonderfully entertaining action video! Txlsplash: A very fast and exciting Spiderman video that tells his story in a coherent way. The lyrics fit very well with the clips. I like the segment at 0:40 a very nice clip choice for a change in dynamics, and also the running sequence that follows it. The clip at 1:55 is also well placed, and at 2:06 also. Best Action Runner Up: Setting Sun by Martouf Marty (Award) Stargate Atlantis - general/action Obsessive24: Incredibly on-point editing with fabulous internal motion, and I especially love how the sound mirrors certain visual elements, such as at 0:43 or 0:50. My favourite is the clip at 3:05. The reverse motion clips, such as the ones starting at 2:19 and at 2:35, are very cool and suited the music well. Txlsplash: A very impressive general action video that manages to hold my attention throughout. The clips are very well selected with excellent internal motion such as at 0:22 and 0:30. I like the static at 0:43 it fit very well with the mechanical feel. The reversal effects work well with the music. The explosion at 3:05 goes perfectly with the music. The waking up clip at 3:47 was also great. I loved the abrupt ending to the video. *** Best Mood Piece: Colorblind by whereistheluv (Award) Veronica Mars - character study/narrative - Veronica Obsessive24: This vid boasts some extremely impressive color effects - it had a very specific purpose and really drove the vid along thematically. I loved the piano-driven editing: the subtle changes in dynamics are caught nicely in your alterations to cutting speed, and I loved the pace and internal motion, especially at 1:43 after the quietness that came before. On top of that, the clip choices and correlations are great; I liked how you focused on individual subplots one by one, which presented a beautifully coherent narrative through the show. Txlsplash: "Wow" is what I say to the colors in this video. I can tell a lot of time and effort were put into creating the colorblind effect that worked so well with the video. The video is a nice insight into Veronica's character as well as a story on its own. I like the clip at 0:38, where the camera zooms around Veronica and she becomes colored as it progresses while the background people in black and white are sped up. Best Mood Piece Runner Up: Modern Myth by Nicole (Award) Brokeback Mountain - narrative/shipper - Jack/Ennis Reviewed below. *** Best Narrative: The War is Over by Dragonchic (Award) Spider-Man 1 & 2 - general/action Reviewed above. Best Narrative runner up (joint runners-up, presented in no order): Modern Myth by Nicole (Award) Brokeback Mountain - narrative/shipper - Jack/Ennis Reviewed below. Colorblind by whereistheluv (Award) Veronica Mars - character study/narrative - Veronica Reviewed above. *** Best Shipper: Modern Myth by Nicole (Award) Brokeback Mountain - narrative/shipper - Jack/Ennis Obsessive24: I love the clear narrative structure of this vid, the way the strong emotional story is told in an extremely tender way. Very well-timed editing and attention to changes in dynamics. I especially liked where the music changes at 0:48 and the voice track comes back in, it was extremely evocative. The slow-burning build-up of emotion toward the end was gorgeous. Txlsplash: Beautifully selected clips throughout create an emotional story. I really like the progression of the video, going from the early, new love to the end, with flashes back to the beginning. The black and white clips give the clips a reminiscent feel. I like the segment beginning at 0:35. The dialogue adds power to the narrative. Best Shipper Runner Up: So Beautiful by Foomatic (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - shipper - Willow/Tara Obsessive24: A tender and well-edited mood piece. I really love the way you take close-ups of certain moments, it really lends the vid a sense of gravity that would not have come across so well otherwise. The added external movement is gorgeous. Txlsplash: I really like the way the video is structured: the dialogue at the beginning of the video sets up the mood for the rest of the video it's like Xander is asking if Willow is ready to revisit her memories of Tara. The interspersed clips of the graveyard scene serve to emphasize this point: that she is remembering from that time. The clips are very touching and well chosen. *** Best Insight: Colorblind by whereistheluv (Award) Veronica Mars - character study/narrative - Veronica Reviewed above. Best Insight Runner Up: She's a Rebel by Shoopdancer (Award) Dawson's Creek - character study - Abby Morgan Obsessive24: I love the quick and precise cutting style in this, it worked well with the character. I also really enjoyed the quick ending; it felt quite whimsical and was appropriate for the overall feeling of this vid and the character storyline. Txlsplash: Very fast, upbeat editing. A video that gives a very nice look at a lively, rebellious character who seems fun to watch. I especially love the drum fills those can never steer you wrong. *** Best Overview: Californication by Sweetie (Award) LOST - general - season 1 Reviewed above. Best Overview Runner Up: Setting Sun by Martouf Marty (Award) Stargate Atlantis - general/action Reviewed above. *** Awards for Excellence Awarded to videos that did not win awards in the conventional categories, but both judges thought were outstanding. Presented in no order. Memento by Frivolity (Award) Memento - general Obsessive24: I love the editing in this vid, the mix of long and short clips and surreal images made for extremely compelling viewing. The use of text is inspired. Txlsplash: I've never seen Memento, but the video did a very good job of intriguing me. I was impressed by the clarity of the narrative, especially because the movie is supposed to be confusing, and I could understand what was going on somewhat. I was a bit hypnotized. Batman Begins Trailer by Kristin (Award) Batman Begins - trailer Obsessive24: An extremely professional-looking trailer that evokes a great tense mood. The insightful selection and use of voiceovers is very driving and gives a tight and focused narrative of the film. The last quarter, with the increased pace and beat-driven editing, is my personal favourite bit. Txlsplash: A very well-edited, exciting video. The progression is wonderful - building up tension throughout with very well placed voiceovers until the Pompeii climax kicks in. I like the flashes of bats at 1:06. I also like the shot at 1:34. *** Awards for Achievement in Vidding Judges' picks from videos that did not win awards in the above categories. Presented in no order. Obsessive24's Picks: Pullo & Vorenus by yorkshirewench (Award) Rome - relationship study - Pullo & Vorenus I loved the internal motion and how well some of the visuals echoed the nuances in the music, such as at 0:22 or 1:24. The clip choice at 1:22, in particular, is very apt. The editing in this vid is wonderfully subtle and worked well with the source content. Txlsplash doesn't have any picks for this round. |
