Best Video: Go With the Flow by Cec and Kaycee (Award) Equilibrium - general/action Obsessive24: The use of effects and transitions in this vid is absolutely wonderful, and I can't imagine the amount of time and effort it must have taken! The action sequences are great, and I loved the composition of the overlays/image masks, especially at 1:14 and 1:29. I also really enjoyed the use of reverse motion, such as at 1:22 or 2:44. An incredibly well-edited and surreal vid. Txlsplash: An incredible video! The editing is superb. I love the diversity also - the tons of different styles and effects used throughout the video. The video is very re-watchable, and manages to keep my attention until the end. The clips are very beautiful and are placed in such a wonderful way. The overlays are extremely well done. And the way the very cool fighting clips are placed adds a lot to the intensity. There are so many sections of this video that I just love: the introduction until the title screen, the bit at 0:22 with the photographs, the bit at 0:48 (the cuts in the fighting to the beat are just wonderful), and the following part at 0:50 (very intense), at 1:10 with the mirror, the soldiers at 1:25, the gunplay at 2:20, and the ending. Best Video Runner Up: Haunt You Every Day by Beasley Jr (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - relationship study - Buffy/Spike Reviewed below. *** Best Action: Go With the Flow by Cec and Kaycee (Award) Equilibrium - general/action Reviewed above. Best Action Runner Up: Temptation by Andrea (Award) Angel - thematic overview/action Obsessive24: I really liked the flow of images in this vid, the way you used source movement in such an interesting, dynamic way. It really made for a mesmerising vid visually while driving the theme home. I particularly liked the pacing of the Darla sequence beginning at 1:34, and the classroom sequence beginning at 2:26. Txlsplash: A very good action video that is also insightful. I like how the mood shifts for the dynamic changes. The action clips are well placed. I love the Darla bits. I like the punch at 0:20. I like the clip of the lawyers at 0:51 - very intimidating. The parts from 'Conviction' work very well, especially the classroom fight scene. *** Best Mood Piece: There are no award winners for Best Mood Piece in this round. *** Best Narrative: Unrequited by foomatic (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - AU/shipper - Willow/Tara Obsessive24: I enjoyed the AU narrative of this vid, and the flow of the editing to the soft-sounding song. It's intensely romantic and very sad, while at the same time extremely enjoyable to watch! Txlsplash: The narrative of the video is simple but effective. The AU clips are well done. I especially like the section at 0:50 with the flashes to the beat. The clips at 1:41 are placed very well - Tara's facial expressions are very convincing. Best Narrative runner up: There is no Best Narrative runner up in this round. *** Best Shipper: Haunt You Every Day by Beasley Jr (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - relationship study - Buffy/Spike Obsessive24: The use of effects in this vid just blows me away. There are so many things - internal and external motion, overlays, stills, time toggle and split screens, all used with purpose and meaning and it made for a wonderful viewing experience. I particularly loved the intercutting between two very similar scenes at different times and places, such as the sequence starting at 0:42 or 0:45. The speeding up and then slowing of the clip at 0:52 was really effective, and I loved the zoom-in starting at 1:14. A fantastic relationship study. Txlsplash: An excellent look at the Buffy and Spike's relationship. The effects used are just right - neither excessive nor annoying. They add to the narrative. I especially liked the split screens. When the chorus kicks in, the sped up screaming clips are very effective. My favorite part is when Spike jumps on the coffin during the final chorus - a great clip to use for a sudden change in dynamics. Best Shipper Runner Up: I'm With You by yorkshirewench (Award) Pride & Prejudice - shipper - Elizabeth/Darcy Obsessive24: There's such a fabulous sense of movement in this vid. I love the composition and use of overlays, especially where you utilise two sides of the screen at different times such as the sequence starting at 2:08, echoed at 2:38. I also really liked the subtle moments of internal motion, such as at 2:17 or the entire dancing sequence starting at 2:40. Txlsplash: An excellent relationship video. The major plus of this video is the placement of clips and internal motion. I really like the beginning; it sets the mood very well. I like the clips at 0:29 in the rain. The cutting between the swing clip and the others are effective at 2:23. *** Best Insight: Haunt You Every Day by Beasley Jr (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - relationship study - Buffy/Spike Reviewed above. Best Insight Runner Up: Personal Jesus by Brad (Award) Firefly/Serenity - character study/overview - Book Reviewed below. *** Best Overview: Personal Jesus by Brad (Award) Firefly/Serenity - character study/overview - Book Obsessive24: This vid is incredibly innovative in its use of effects. I particularly liked what you did with time toggle, and I loved the sense of movement, particularly the push and pulls you put on the stills. The moment at 0:55 is lovely, and I loved the jump cuts starting at 1:16. I also really liked how you used visual motifs to carry clip transitions, such as the flame at 1:04 or Mal walking at 2:31. This vid conveys a very complex idea in an accessible and elegant way, and is a joy to watch. Txlsplash: A very insightful Firefly video told from a unique perspective. The premise works very well - Book as an observer of the ship. There are some excellent effects used. I love how the beginning of the video establishes the Western mood with the horses and the bars, etc. The lighting in some of these clips is highlighted by the grainy effect of the video, like at 1:26. The switch to color is also very awesome. My favorite part of the video is at 2:56, when Simon reaches for Kaylee and the color changes, but when Book interrupts it changes back. Very clever! Best Overview Runner Up: Temptation by Andrea (Award) Angel - thematic overview/action Reviewed above. *** Awards for Excellence Awarded to videos that did not win awards in the conventional categories, but both judges thought were outstanding. Presented in no order. Lonely Day by Basketkase543 (Award) LOST - character study/shipper - Jin, Jin/Sun Obsessive24: I love the use of subtitles in this vid, it gave a very strong narrative element and really helped develop the character through dialogue, which is something not often seen in vids. I liked the on-beat internal motion at 1:22 - 1:25, and again with the walking at 2:35 - 2:40. The intercutting of the scenes between 1:50 - 1:58 was lovely and really suited the music. Txlsplash: A great overview of the Jin/Sun relationship. The subtitles really work to the video's advantage - an effect that is rarely done well. The dynamic shift at 0:48 goes wonderfully with the clip. I like the interspersed clips at 1:51. The bit with Jin's father is very touching. *** Awards for Achievement in Vidding Judges' picks from videos that did not win awards in the above categories. Presented in no order. Obsessive24's Picks: Perfect Situation by becca (Award) The Office (US) - shipper - Jim/Pam I really liked the use of the handheld source footage in this vid, it fitted the music really well. The cutting is clean and extremely well-paced, and it's a very enjoyable vid to watch. Black Balloon by Elvira (Award) Lord of the Rings - relationship & character studies - Aragorn, Arwen, Eowyn I liked the subtle external motion in this vid, how it adds a lovely sense of flow to the visuals. I also really enjoyed how the pace picked up in the second half. In particular, I liked the similarity in composition linking the two clips at 3:01, and how the sequence beginning at 3:03 had the same directional movement through all the clips: the sense of motion really flowed through your clip choices and gave rise to a sense of understated and sophisticated editing. Out of Reach by whereistheluv (Award) Veronica Mars - episodic/relationship study - 1x16, Betty & Veronica I really enjoyed the way you utilised the full potential of the interesting camera movement in the source footage; it made for fabulous motion and connection. The music has quite a unique sound to it, and the interesting rhythm structure played off the editing in an effective way. This is a great episodic vid. Txlsplash's Picks: Tainted Love by Kristin (Award) Queen of the Damned - character study/overview - Lestat A very dark and sensual video. The vampires look very badass. I like the old movie effect at the beginning, very old-school vampire. The flashes on the beat are well done. I like at 0:18 the flashes of the crowd and the misty effect starting at 1:00. The flashes of red are very nice. |
