Best Video: Closer by Kristin (Award) American Psycho - character - Patrick Bateman Obsessive24: This is an extremely well edited vid that keeps wonderfully in tune with the comic mania of the source. It also boats very innovative use of effects - I really like the sepia filter, as well as the constant zooming in and out. The repetition of clips and reversed clips in the bridge, starting around the 3:00 mark, is fantastic - it's so incredibly detailed and professional-looking. I especially liked how the cutting kept going back to him peeling off the face mask, which really summed up the overall "mask of sanity" theme. Txlsplash: The effects and editing in this video are amazing. The consistent effects used throughout give the video a distinct feel - cold, gritty, old... psycho. The wavy black borders and the old-movie grainy look create an insane clash of atmospheres. I especially like the beginning sequence, the overlay zoom during the choruses, the line at 0:45, the zooms starting around 1:00, the sequence at 1:18. My favorite part of the video starts at around 3:00, with the unique cutting sequences and reversals. The part at 3:13 is very creepy. I like the jump-roping sequences and the video-tape sequences with the strange strand of light. At 4:11, I like the chainsaw part. A truly innovative and scary video, bravo! Best Video Runner Up: Feel Good Drag by Jessie (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - overview - season 6 Reviewed below. *** Best Action: Advent Forces: MOAB by Rick Anderson (Award) Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - action Obsessive24: This is an incredibly professional, well edited action video. The transitions between different scenes are flawless. The internal motion and dynamics of the fight sequences are gorgeously done. What impressed me the most is how you timed the action and pacing so the viewer isn't overwhelmed with visual information at any one time but rather able to keep up with the great flow. That shows incredible mastery of your medium. Despite all the violence, the video is filled with a great sense of elegance. Txlsplash: Yay for epic choir music! The clips are edited with the music so that you get a rush when watching this video. The very impressive thing about the editing is how it goes from one sequence to the next, using a move (like a sliding motorcycle) to transition to the next. Best Action Runner Up: Bodies by Sarah Beth (Award) Serenity - action Obsessive24: Excellent action editing and some wonderful use of effects! The overlay work, in particular, is extremely accomplished. I love how it is the internal motion that drives the beat-oriented editing, as opposed to strictly cutting on the beat. It gives a wonderful flow to the vid, as well as a great sense of "rewatchability". Txlsplash: Very exciting and fast-paced video. There are some great effects and overlays, especially the ones before the chorus kicks in; also at 1:17, 1:24 and especially at 2:40. I'm also a fan of the red zoom-outs that go along with the counting. *** Best Mood Piece: Closer by Kristin (Award) American Psycho - character - Patrick Bateman Reviewed above. Best Mood Piece Runner Up: Sao Paulo Rain by Kari2001 (Award) Harry Potter (1-4) - angst, character - Harry Obsessive24: This vid boasts beautiful use of source footage, and is a wonderfully melancholy study of the films. There are a lot of fabulous clip correlations, and the internal motion is consistently excellent. I love the turn at 2:10, the transition at 2:27 and the lifting of the head at 2:30. From 2:36 onwards the tempo picks up, and the chorus is relentlessly chilling. The bridge starting from the zoom into the eye is also gorgeous, and the nostalgic mood of those clips really serves as counterpoint to the darker overall mood. The clip-lyric matches are very well done, especially considering the difficult nature of the lyrics. I thought "do not disturb this blood red earth/there's giants sleeping beneath" was especially chilling and beautiful. The pace toward the end is simply gorgeous, and the way it ended sent shivers down my spine. A wonderful vid. Txlsplash: I really like the feel of the video; the clips match with the music perfectly. The most impressive thing is the clip choice and awareness of internal motion that is demonstrated. I love the clock sequences – they work incredibly well with the music. Also – 1:20, the dancing at 1:49, the eye-opening at 2:39 and the following sequence. The ending with the quick cutting between clips is wonderful. *** Best Narrative: Lemon by Aimee (Award) Thirteen - character, relationship study - Tracey, Tracey/Evie Obsessive24: This is a very sensitive character study, with a great sense of structure. I love the colour effects in this vid, they add a lot to the mood without being obtrusive to the narrative. The use of source "mockumentary" motion is superb and lends the vid a lovely flow. Even though I haven't seen the film, the mood came across really clearly: the notion of an increasingly destructive relationship and the overwhelming sense of being trapped. Txlsplash: The story told in this video is clear and affecting. The anguish of the protagonist is almost palpable, especially after seeing the good times mixed with the bad. I love how the video starts and ends with the same clip – the girl looking in the mirror. It gives it a sense of completion. The color effects are nicely inserted and make certain things really stand out (pink hair). Plus, it looks like Nina Myers is in there. Sarah Clarke can't steer you wrong. Best Narrative runner up: Because of You by yorkshirewench (Award) Sparkhouse - character & relationship studies - Carol, her father, Andrew Obsessive24: I love the sense of motion in this vid. You use the source camera movement in a way that shows great sensitivity to the flow of music. I also love how the narrative is arranged: even when it's not chronological, and even though I haven't seen the source, the story still came across clearly with a very defined sense of structure. Txlsplash: This video wonderfully contrasts the good and bad of the protagonist's experiences, and it's very satisfying to see her take out her anger on that car... I'm just saying. The narrative is very clear and shows what she has had to put up with in her life. The cutting between her bruised face and getting beaten up is very effective. I really love the ending – the crying people fading out, leaving just the empty house. Very well done. *** Best Shipper: Lemon by Aimee (Award) Thirteen - character, relationship study - Tracey, Tracey/Evie Reviewed above. Best Shipper Runner Up: Thinking Over by Leanna (Award) Veronica Mars - shipper - Veronica/Logan Obsessive24: I really enjoyed the overlay work in this vid, the composition is lovely. There are some absolutely fantastic connections between movement within clips, such as at 1:02 or 1:11. Txlsplash: Insightful video with lots of nice lyric matches and overlays. I love the change of pace at 1:10, and the following color contrast of Veronica on her bed and the overlay. I like the segment at 2:08. *** Best Insight: Closer by Kristin (Award) American Psycho - character - Patrick Bateman Reviewed above. Best Insight Runner Up: Every Day is Exactly the Same by Ryan (Award) Angel - series overview, character study - Angel Obsessive24: Great beat-oriented cutting with excellent internal motion and use of effects. I love the use of static flashes, it's a technique that really draws the whole vid together. As always, Ryan's clip associations are fantastic and shows off an in-depth knowledge of source. My favourite moments are the connections between the clips at 2:12, and also 3:27. I love the way the clip choice builds up toward the end and works itself into a veritable tide of pain; it's incredibly moving. The twist at the end is also cleverly done! Txlsplash: A very interesting insight into Angel's character. The video has an ironic feel. The effects are wonderfully inserted, but the video's main asset is the clip choice and the internal motion. I love the static effect in the beginning and also throughout the rest of the video. I like the "same routine" line around 0:14, and the overlay and static dissolve at 0:18. I like the dream sequence at 0:30, the fire flashes at 0:58, the part starting at 3:00, and the hospital beds bit at 3:46. *** Best Overview: Feel Good Drag by Jessie (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - overview - season 6 Obsessive24: An expertly edited vid with crisp cutting and great structure, sorting the many arcs in the season into discrete elements and then bringing them all back together again. I love how the narrative focus shifted at 1:02, with the connection between the two clips. The overall mood is fantastically chilling, fierce yet emotional. I especially loved the way the pace sped up around 1:50 and continued through to the end. Txlsplash: A very well edited and addictive video. I love the use of effects - the colors are enhanced, and many of the scenes seem more vibrant because of it. The lyric matches are impressive and all of season six's stories come together in a very nice way, creating a great overview of the entire season. The color effects particularly in the beginning and the end are very beautifully inserted; I like the black flashes at 0:14. I also like the segment from 1:03 to 1:13. The Willow sequence from 1:51 to 2:01 is done very well, and the whole bridge that follows it. Best Overview Runner Up: Every Day is Exactly the Same by Ryan (Award) Angel - series overview, character study - Angel Reviewed above. *** Awards for Excellence Awarded to videos that did not win awards in the conventional categories, but both judges thought were outstanding. Presented in no order. Disappearing One by Brad (Award) Firefly - episodic - 1x09 "Out of Gas" Obsessive24: This is an extremely innovative video, employing some fantastic techniques to really bring an idea home. The sense of musicality is wonderful and there is a great flow throughout the whole vid. The "disappearing" transitions toward the end are very original and really spoke to the overall theme. Txlsplash: A very impressive and insightful episodic video! Lots of ideas are explored here. The empty ship is contrasted very well with the memories of the full crew, and the blurry zoom effect is great. The table wipe at 0:53 is very cool. I like the frozen frames, too. Excalibur by dragonchic (Award) Justice League Unlimited - action, series overview Obsessive24: A great action video with a wonderful sense of dynamic! The thing that I love most about this vid is how well you matched audio cues with visuals, such as the zoom out at 0:24 or the way the light flares on the synth at 0:37. Txlsplash: Yay, a cartoon video! I love how the clips are put together. The effects are light, but the action and excitement is kept up through crisp editing on the beat. I love the fall with the music at 0:55. The flashes at 1:13 go very well with the music and increase the intensity. *** Awards for Achievement in Vidding Judges' picks from videos that did not win awards in the above categories. Presented in no order. Obsessive24's Picks: Stricken by Tany (Award) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - action, gen This vid charges along at breakneck speed, with an extremely impressive sense of energy and movement all through. Great editing and fantastic internal motion! I especially liked your sensitivity to audio-visual matches, such as the zooming-out clip at 0:37 or the movement within the clip at 0:50 and 0:53. The wink at 1:52 was a personal favourite moment. Behind Blue Eyes by Estelle (Award) Brotherhood of the Wolf - character - Jean-François de Morangias I really liked the use of objects in this vid, the wolf in the establishing shots, the clip of the swinging cross at 0:10. They set a fantastic mood from the outset, which is echoed all through the vid with shots such as the ring at 1:18, the hand and the dagger at 1:39. I also loved the way you acknowledged subtle audio cues with internal motion, such as the turn at 0:31 with the tilt of the head, the ensuing turn at 0:35, or the gun on the shoulder at 2:11. I'm also a fan of the cutting and pace in this vid - it feels very natural and the flow is excellent. The prolonged tracking shot at 2:29 is a gorgeous touch and echoed the "whistling" audio layer at that point. Forever Young by Zohar (Award) Queer as Folk (US) - overview - season 4 I really like the way the structure of this vid is arranged into clear segments, and provides a clear overview of the season. There are some lovely overlay work, especially around the section beginning at 0:49. The clips you chose for the bridge, starting at 1:09, are very emotional. I also really liked how the movement is matched to audio at 2:05. American Idiot by becca (Award) Dazed & Confused - gen, humour An exciting, fast-paced vid with great cutting, internal motion and some excellent use of added zooms. I really liked the sense of dynamics - 0:10 and 0:58 were particularly awesome. Gone Away by Shoopdancer (Award) Veronica Mars - gen, relationship study - Veronica & Lilly A great opening - I'm a sucker for on-beat intercutting! It's also wonderful to see that same technique used several times later, bringing a sense of cohesion to the whole vid. I also loved the way you used the flashback sequences and the associated colour/effect schemes, as well as some wonderful overlays, such as at 1:27 or 1:54. The rapid fill at 2:50 is so cool! This is a beautifully edited and very emotional video, and a real joy to watch. Txlsplash's Picks: House Rules by Andrea (Award) Angel - humour, setting spotlight - Caritas A very fun video! The lyric matches are very impressive, and there are lots of great connections. I like at 0:54, the "gets high" line with Lorne fainting, the "Angel..." line at 1:39, the attitude line at 1:58 and the great fire scene at the end. Out of Control by Martouf Marty (Award) Alias - action, character study - Sark Ah, Sark is badass. This video shows it. The action sequences go very well with the music, and the cutting is excellent. I like the black and white zooms starting at 1:03 and the white flashes at 1:10. Very effective overlay at 1:14. |
