Best Video: System by Kristin (Award) Queen of the Damned - character study/performance music video - Lestat Obsessive24: An expertly constructed video with a charged, hypnotic atmosphere. The pace is excellent, and I especially loved the composition and movement of overlays. A fantastic editing job - this video looks extremely professional and is a joy to watch. Txlsplash: Wow! This video is so well done and very professional looking! I don't know where the source footage for the overlays came from, but they were expertly placed. The way the singing is combined with footage from the movie looks very professional. The whole thing reminds me of a very twisted and dark music video you might see on TV. The continuous flashing and flickering of the overlays and color on top of the internal motion make this a very intense video. Best Video Runner Up (joint runners-up, awarded in no order): Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Brad (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - character study/action - Spike Reviewed below. World on Fire by Sweetie (Award) Tru Calling - overview Reviewed below. *** Best Action: Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Brad (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - character study/action - Spike Obsessive24: This vid is replete with great internal motion and clip associations. Flow of movement from one clip to the next is expertly done. My personal favourite thing about it is how well the pace fits with the stop-and-start feel of the rhythm pattern; it's incredible how well the visuals fit the audio nuance. Clip choice is fresh, selecting some fantastic little-vidded moments over more conventional clips, and that really gave an organic feel to characterisation and development. Txlsplash: An expertly done action video. The effects aren't consuming or distracting, but done in a very subtle way that adds to the flow of the clips. I especially like the transition to the fight scene at 0:48. I also really like the bits involving the Amy/Buffy rats. They are an interesting contrast to Spike, but connect through the song. I LOVE the cutting between the fighting clips starting at 2:43. Best Action Runner Up: Zombie by afterThought (Award) Firefly/Serenity - action/character study - River Obsessive24: I really liked the concept behind the video, and the interesting techniques employed such as the use of text, overlays and stills. I liked the cutting, especially the well-timed intercutting in the sequence beginning at 2:25, and there are some great moments of internal motion, such as 1:55 and the fight sequence around 3:00. The clip association at 4:01 is wonderful, and I love the way it ended. Txlsplash: The way that this video was approached was very interesting and well thought-out. The quote at the beginning is awesome! And I like the use of the River interrogation scenes. I love when those scenes are overlays of Simon and his parents. I also love the cutting between the cartoon advertisement and the fight scenes. I've always thought that those cartoons were really creepy and they were used excellently here. *** Best Mood Piece: System by Kristin (Award) Queen of the Damned - character study/performance music video - Lestat Reviewed above. Best Mood Piece Runner Up: World on Fire by Sweetie (Award) Tru Calling - overview Reviewed below. *** Best Narrative: The End by whereistheluv (Award) Veronica Mars - event overview - the bus crash Obsessive24: I really loved the structure of this vid, it gave an emotional recount of the last two seasons in a very lucid way. The clip connections are beautifully done and there's a lovely fluidity to the overall flow. Editing to a song without a defined rhythm section can be a difficult exercise in pace, and I thought this vid carried it off in a wonderfully unassuming fashion. Txlsplash:A very well put-together video. I haven't seen the last couple episodes of Veronica Mars, but there was still a lot I could draw from this video. It addressed things from both seasons, like the Lily Kane murder, and tied it in nicely to the end of the second season. Best Narrative runner up: Hard Times by Shazzer (Award) General Hospital - event overview - virus in Port Charles Obsessive24: Despite not knowing the source I got a really good feel for the storyline from the vid, and I thought that really spoke to the clarity and structure of the narrative. There's a great sense of emotional timing throughout, and the use of keyed colouring really added to the overall story told. Txlsplash: I thought that this video was very well done, despite the source being more difficult to work with than most others. The narrative is clear, and the focus shifts through numerous characters and their problems. *** Best Shipper: Into the Dark by Aimee (Award) The O.C. - shipper - Seth/Ryan Obsessive24: What a fun, light-hearted video! This vid really embodies all that is cute and adorable about the pair, whether in a platonic way or otherwise. The editing feels very organic and well-paced, and the lyric matches fit nicely without being overly literal. Txlsplash: You wouldn't guess from the title, but this video is very upbeat and fun. I have never seen the show, but I can see a strong friendship between these two. Looks like lots of good times were had, and this is the focus of the video. The minimal use of effects works very well in this case. Best Shipper Runner Up: Hey Pretty by Martouf Marty (Award) Dr Who - character study/shipper - Rose, Rose/Doctor Obsessive24: A fun vid marked by excellent pace and internal motion. The keyed intro, and the shot with the phones at 2:07, were my favourite parts. Txlsplash: A very fun, uplifting video! Obviously, there's lots of adventure in the world of Doctor Who, and this video makes it look like so much fun! I like how it's seen from Rose's perspective, and the lyric matches throughout are excellent. I especially like the intro, and how the first part is a story. Girl wakes up on a regular day, until she stumbles into this other world. Very well done! *** Best Insight: System by Kristin (Award) Queen of the Damned - character study/performance music video - Lestat Reviewed above. Best Insight Runner Up: Bullet With Butterfly Wings by Brad (Award) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - character study/action - Spike Reviewed above. *** Best Overview: World on Fire by Sweetie (Award) Tru Calling - overview Obsessive24: The thing I love most about this vid is how well clip connections are carried out, and how much they add to the overall mood and themes. It gave a wonderful emotional aspect to the overview of the show, showing how much Tru's friends and family stand in the way of harm and how she must always try to save them. The connections at 0:18, 0:33, 0:47, 0:54 and coming back to full circle at 2:45 all speak very eloquently. The gun sequence starting at 1:36 is my favourite. The editing is beautifully timed with a great sense of flow; I particularly liked way the camera movement followed through at 2:01. The colouring and close-cropping of some clips also helped the mood immensely and gave it an intimate feel. Txlsplash: A very nostalgic look at Tru Calling. Makes me want to rewatch the show from the beginning! The parallels drawn between the clips are impressive, and add to the overall flow of the video by creating clever transitions. I love how everyone is included in the narrative, and they are all tied together by Tru. I think my favorite segment starts at 2:33, with the zooming of little Tru and big Tru, and then the out of focus overlay in the next shot. Excellent work! Best Overview Runner Up: Blurry by Leanna (Award) Veronica Mars - overview Obsessive24: A sensitive overview of the series to date. My favourite thing about this vid is the lovely connections between clips, for example the violence at 1:29, the hallway at 3:05, and the turning at 3:06. There are also some great spots of subtle audio-cued movement: my favourites are 2:21 and 1:48. I also thought the ambiguous ending was very cute! Txlsplash: A great overview video of Veronica Mars! It's different from most of the other Veronica Mars videos I have seen in style, and it works very well here. The use of overlays and zooms and color effects are well placed. I especially like the blurry effect at 0:27, I like the lyric matches starting at 1:08 and 1:45, the chorus at 3:42. *** Awards for Excellence Awarded to videos that did not win awards in the conventional categories, but both judges thought were outstanding. Presented in no order. I Woke Up in a Car by Ringwench (Award) Supernatural - "character" studies - Sam, the Impala Obsessive24: I love the movement in this vid, especially the subtle external and internal motion on the beat, such as the push-ins on 0:23 and 0:25 or the hand at 0:27. The vid is full with little moments like that and it really added to the overall flow. Connections between clips are excellent, for example at 1:02 and 1:05. There's just a wonderful sense of "togetherness" about this whole vid, and a great sense of developing narrative and structure. My favourite moments are how the movement corresponded to the guitars at 2:33, and the drumming at 3:07. Txlsplash: I like how this video comes together around the car. Lots of other things are explored, but mostly in the context of traveling in the car. I love that some of the segments are portrayed as dream sequences because in the ensuing clip, the main character wakes up (like at 1:56). It's all tied together very nicely. Brother, Let Go by Di (Award) The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - character/relationship study - Peter & Edmund Obsessive24: This vid is an uplifting journey through two separate character storylines, which then merge in a very moving way. I love the flashback at 3:35, the emotional timing was excellent and really brought the whole narrative structure together. I also thought the refrain was done really nicely. Txlsplash: I love that this video encompasses both sibling rivalry and brotherly love in a very moving way. It seems that the clips are cut at just the right times, so that there is a lot of internal motion, but the clips don't go on too long. The ending is great, too! Donnie Darko by Khris (Award) Donnie Darko - overview Obsessive24: A snappy and well-edited vid. I really liked the colour effects and intercutting on the guitar riffs, it looks distinctive and very stylish. The lyric matches to the Jim Cunningham section was excellent. The dynamics in cutting back into the chorus at 2:28 was also really well done. Txlsplash: Very well done video. The quick red and white flashes go along with the electric sound excellently (and they look very nifty!). I love the flashes at 1:00, and the repeated stabbing segment. *** Awards for Achievement in Vidding Judges' picks from videos that did not win awards in the above categories. Presented in no order. Obsessive24's Picks: Remember When It Rained by Alexus Luthor (Award) Smallville - shipper/narrative - Lex/Lana I'm unfamiliar with Smallville, so I didn't know whether this was an AU story or one grounded in canon, but either way I thought the narrative was very well carried out. Clip associations are nicely done, for example at 1:28, 2:54 and 2:59. Source movement was used well with a great sense of flow throughout. I especially liked the flashing on-beat at 2:25. Someday by kevin (Award) Tru Calling - episodic - 1x02 "Putting Out Fires" A great fast-paced episodic vidlet. The cutting is excellent: I especially liked the quick intercutting between clips at 0:25 and 0:49, and also how the source "zooming transition" was used at 0:41 and the end. Too Sexy by SamanthaJackson (Award) Veronica Mars - character study/humour - Dick Casablancas I really enjoyed the beat-oriented cutting in this vid, and some of the lyric matches had me laughing out loud. The added external motion also worked well in context. A wonderfully fun spotlight on a supporting character! Txlsplash's Picks: Nemo by Zohar (Award) Angel - character study - Illyria A wonderful look at Illyria. I love the coloring effects throughout, and the overlays look wonderful, especially at 0:10 and the chorus at 0:47 (which is a really amazing backdrop, from another source I think). I like the zoom at 1:00, and the ending rounds everything off nicely. Chasing Cars by Cec and Kaycee (Award) Angel - shipper/relationship study - Angel/Cordelia A very sweet, nostalgic look at the Cordelia/Angel relationship. They had lots of good times together pre-season 4, and those are really shown very well in this video. I like the clip at 0:42, the effect at 0:50, and the globe shot at 0:55. Most of the clips in the video are rather obscure. This is the right way to go, because all of the little moments build up to create a very new, emotional feeling that isn't captured by the huge events. The clip at 1:49 is a great lyric match, and the one at 2:21 captures Cordelia so very well. |
