Chapter three

To Live, To Die, To Breath

In the morning, when they woke, the first thing they thought of was food. They decided to split up and search for food, water, and shelter. Em went off to look for shelter since she insisted that she didn’t need a boy to look out for her. Paul, saying that if Em could go alone then so could he, went in search of water. That left Sarah and Peter to search for food.

Paul left in absolute absurdity, going into the darkest part of the woods, looking for water that would be found somewhere different. Just as he thought that he should call for help, he saw a crow. He thought to himself, “/how strange maybe if I follow it, it will lead me to water or at least out of this forest.” /He followed the bird past a stream and into a thicket, where he found a lagoon with enough water to last a life time. So he thought that perhaps he should make a trail with stones and sticks so he could find it later.

As Em walked on, thinking of having to go into the woods with that Paul, well, that.... She thought that the best place for shelter would be somewhere by rocks, maybe a cave or an alcove. She had seen some rocks over on the left side of the island, so she headed off that way. It took her about an hour or two just to get to the rocks, and then she had to get to the high rocks which were on the other side. It was after 3 p.m. when she got to the taller rocks. She was so tired that she decided to lay by the only tree that was in the rocks. When she lay down, she noticed a trickle of water coming down like a tiny waterfall, and thought if she could find where it came from she could probably make it into some kind of pool.

Just then, she fell asleep. Em was tossing about in her sleep. She was having a bad dream. It was one that she always had about her walking on water. Then all of a sudden, she dropped into the water. Just as she’s about to drop, she heard a crow call. She sat straight up and whacked her head on a ledge. Em looked around and saw a hole under the roots of the tree. As she started to climb in, she realized that it was a cave, and a pretty big one at that. She decided that it would be better to wait for light. She climbed out as fast as she could. She can’t wait to tell everyone what she found. But she decided that she should try to find the source of the water and try to make a dam, so that when they came back they would be able to drink from her pool.

Peter thought that the best way to get food would be to make a net to catch fish. He told Sarah that the best way to do that would be to use reeds and then wait for them to dry. So they started the long process of gathering the reeds and tying them together. After a while, Sarah said, “Peter you’re no good at this, why don’t you go and look for some fruit and I can finish. Don’t worry, I will be fine. It’s not like I’ve never been alone before. Besides, I’m sure the others will be hungry when they get back and this will take a lot longer than fruit will”.
