Kanshiwa Bunkai

Kanshiwa Bunkai is a student’s bunkai. Below, I will label the attacks and defenses that I use and teach my students; I will not try to teach or discuss the bunkai in detail. Remember, these may vary from dojo to dojo, this is just one variation.

 

Tori   Performs first three punches from the kata
Uki   Throws a left punch to the head
Tori   Turns, blocks, and punches to the ribs
Uki   Walks around to the other side and throws a right punch to the head
Tori   Turns, blocks, and punches to the ribs. Demonstrates the last punch once again.
Tori   Performs the two kicks (sakuto geri)
Uki   Throws a right middle punch
Tori   Blocks and throws a side kick to the attacker’s hip
Uki   Walks around and throws a left middle punch
Tori   Blocks and throws a side kick to the attacker’s hip. Demonstrates the side kick once more.
Tori   Performs the left side kick one more time
Tori   Steps into a right fighting-stance and performs the empei and uraken strike, and then turns (miwatte). Then he/she faces the opponent.
Uki   Throws a fight overhead shuto
Tori   Blocks high and steps into the opponent, throwing a right empei to the ribs followed by a right reiken to the top lip. Demonstrates empei and uraken again and performs the three wa uke block/strikes and turns to face the tori
Uki   Throws a right, middle punch
Tori   Blocks with the left hand and strikes with the thumb knuckles (bushikens)
Uki   Throws a left, middle punch
Tori   Steps into the attack, blocks with the right hand and strikes with the thumb knuckles. Turns and demonstrates the last move again, then performs the shuto, reiken technique and turns to face the tori
Uki   Throws a right, middle punch
Tori   Blocks with the left hand, steps into the attack, and throws a right shuto to the neck and a back uraken to the top lip. Demonstrates the shuto, uraken once more, then turns and performs a left block and front kick.
Uki   Throws a left, middle punch
Tori   Blocks with the left hand and throws a left front kick to the tori’s hips. Demonstrates the block and kick one more time and then, shows the last move of the kata, the left block and shoken punch.
Uki   Stands in a left fighting-stance
Tori   Slides into the uki, blocks the left hand down and throws a right shoken to the solar plexus. Demonstrates the last move again and bows out to the uki and the sensei.
