After spending 10 years as a telecommunication’s engineer, Mike went back to school and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and a Massachusett Standard Teacher’s Certificate in Social Studies for grades 9-12 at Bridgewater State College. He also received his Masters at Bridgewater as well, and most recently another Masters Degree in Military Studies at American Military University. He currently teaches Social Studies at Weymouth High School in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

As Exectutive Director and Chief Instructor of Uechi-ryu America. Mike is a 7th Degree Black Belt in the art of Uechi-ryu awarded to him by his teacher Sensei Robert Campbell 8th Dan. He is also a 4th Degree Black Belt in the art of Nihon Jujitsu. Starting his martial art’s career in 1976 in Weymouth, MA., he has studied and taught at Uechi-ryu America since 1983. He holds the title of Kyoshi and Shihan (Master Instructor) from the International Uechi-ryu Karate Federation and the Uechi-Ryu Karate Association-Hong Kong.

Mike is the "2000 and 2002 Uechi-ryu Black Belt Forms World Champion and 2nd place finisher in Dan Kumite". Mike is currently a registered member in good standing with the Uechi-Ryu Karate Association-Hong Kong, Uechi-ryu Karate Association NAC/SOKE, Okinawa, Japan, the Kokusai Budoin, Tokyo, Japan, the United States Martial Arts Association, and the United States Judo Association. In addition, he is a certified State Examiner for the United States Judo Association and United States Martial Arts Association, and a certified State Referee for the American Karate Association and International Uechi-Ryu Karate Federation.

In August of 2004, Sensei Murphy was accepted as a student of Sensei Robert Campbell, 8th dan Kyoshi from Hong Kong. Sensei Campbell is one of the most highly respected martial artist in the world. He is the only person in the world who has two charters from Grandmaster Kanei Uechi (one in Taiwan, and one is the Philippines). Sensei Murphy received his 6th Dan Rokudan-Renshi, as well as his Shihan (master instructor) from Sensei Campbell in August 2005 and his 7th Dan Nanadan Kyoshi in September 2007. Sensei Campbell has since created the Uechi-ryu Karate Association Hong Kong in which our Uechi-ryu America dojo now belongs.

In his years of training, Mike has had the very good fortune to study and train Uechi-ryu Karate-do, Nihon Jujitsu, Japanese Kobudo, and Budo with some of the most renown Japanese/Okinawan, and American masters here in the United States.
