AnneLarsdatterKvelloaunet_7_th.jpg (5949 bytes)

Johanna Uglem's mother, Anne Larsdatter Kvelloaunet, born March 18, 1835 - died February 18, 1898. Wife of Per Paulson Uglem. Mother of Johanna Pettersdatter Almaas Uglem and her siblings, Sigrid, Mali, Brynhild, Paul, Paul, Lars, Kari and Petrine. This photograph was probably taken around 1885.

About 1885... Johanna looks very young in this photo. I am thinking she looks less than 23 years old. She was 23 when she came to America. So this may be a photo of Johanna before she left Norway, and before she married Torsten. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who thinks they know how old she is in this picture, or where or when it was taken.

Brynhild_Almaas_7_th.jpg (9594 bytes)

Johanna's sister, Brynhild Almaas (Lilleroen), mother of Kari (Almaas) Rodvold. Brynhild lived her life in Norway. Members of our family here in the United States never knew her. But she was a beautiful and gentle person like her sister Johanna. Her story is in the memoirs section of our website.

Torsten's sister Brynhild Ericsdatter Svendgaard, born November 2, 1851, died 1901 in Grove City, Minnesota, pictured here with her husband, Peder Peterson Svinaas, around 1880.

Sigrid_and_Bernt_Kvello_7_th.jpg (7882 bytes)

Johanna Almaas Uglem's sister Sigrid Almaas with her husband Bernt Kvello. They had seven children in Norway. Their second child was Kari Kvello who married Olai Wigen who went to Shelby, Montana to live and raise their family. The Wigen family is mentioned in Hylma's book.

I have added the complete Wigen family genealogy to our on-line family tree database, as well as the Rodvolds and many other branches that were heretofore unknown.

Torsten and Johanna and their three oldest children, John in the middle, Peter on his father's lap, and Emil in babyclothes on his mother's lap. About 1891.

Mabel Uglem, born Feb 21, 1904

Esther appears to be five years old so this photo was taken in 1913 or 1914. Top Row: Emil, Calmer, Sylvia, John, Tena, Peter, Julius. Standing between Sylvia and Tena: Mabel.

Front row, seated, (except for little Esther), left to right: Bentena, Esther, Papa Torsten, Hylma, Mama Johanna and Anna. Thanks to Sonia Kundert for this photo.

Johanna_and_friend_L_th.jpg (9769 bytes)

Johanna and her friend Sigrid Draxten, Torsten's sister. For a long time I wondered who Johanna's friend was, but no one seemed to know. Then I sent the photo to Esther and she knew who it was immediately. She says she may have the original in her home somewhere.

We  know it is Calmer in the middle holding his daughter Melva, and on the far right is Johnny Nelson holding his daughter Bethel, so that dates the photo to late 1928 or early 1929. Uncle John is on the far left. The fellow second from the right looks like Julius. But who is the second from the left?

Sylvia_and_Mabel_in_wheelbarrow_th.jpg (7868 bytes)

Sylvia and Mabel in the wheelbarrow. Johnny Nelson at the helm. Abt 1926. They knew how to have fun.

The Uglem children were raised well. When you look at them in the old photographs, even the everyday photographs like the one above, you see them wearing good clothes, you see them laughing and having fun. They have love in their hearts. These children went to church every Sunday and they did well in school. They respected their teachers, their neighbors and each other. They turned out to be readers, writers and some of them taught school. They raised strong, healthy, intelligent children of their own.

John Magnus Uglem, about 1930

1926_TorstenandJohannas_family_L_th.jpg (9657 bytes)

Left to right: Torsten Uglem, Johanna Uglem, Esther Uglem, Louis Shelby holding his son Warren, Sylvia Uglem Shelby with Bethel in front of her, Hylma Uglem, Bentena Uglem Nelson holding Wendell, Tena Uglem.

Interesting photograph... It's the summer of 1926, just shortly before Hylma's marriage to Ike, August 14th... There is a tenseness in the picture... One gets the feeling of how it was when Torsten and Johanna didn't want Hylma to marry and go away to live in N Dakota. Heck, this may be the very day they left! If not, it's sure close to it...

We are slowly but surely figuring out who everyone is in this picture. My mom's version of the names differs somewhat from Jeanne's. But Jeanne's makes more sense in most areas.  On the right is what we have so far.

1938 or1939. Torsten Uglem with his grandchildren. Behind him is his car and Lake Preston High School. The line-up starting in front of Torsten, lower left: Wendell Nelson, Leslie Nelson, Arleen Uglem, Jeanne Uglem, Laurel Uglem, Bethel Nelson. In front of Laurel: Norma Jean McNaughton. Front row from left: Gordon Nelson, Marlys Nelson, Verna Uglem, Herbie Nelson.

Emil_Uglem_around_1950_s_th.jpg (13457 bytes)

Emil around 1950 in front of the mental institution. He looks a lot like Uncle John doesn't he? Look at how neatly he dresses! Otto tells  about back in the 1950's when he and Esther and the girls visited Emil and took him for a ride in their car. When they stopped at a roadside area with a store Emil insisted on buying them all ice cream.

Sounds like Emil was an acorn that didn't fall all that far from the tree after all, when you think about it. I mean it is a human foible isn't it? --To think we already know all we need to know about a relative and have no need of knowing anything further about them. Think of all the good there might be there to know if only we took the time! Instead we tend to simply lock someone away and shun them. Otto and Esther and their children were the first of our family to visit Emil in a long long time. Most of his sisters and brothers would not discuss him or even speak his name aloud. Some of the traits we inherit need reworking...

Who are these children? Virginia sent me this picture. She thought it might be Calmer and his brothers. But it doesn't look like them and it is from a different generation and there is one too many. I thought it might be Wendell, Leslie, Gordon, and Herbert, but then who were the other two? No. Not them. Rodvolds perhaps? (Jeanne wrote and says she thinks the aren't Uglem relatives at all.) Oh well, it is a nice picture of somebody's relatives, if maybe not ours!

unclejohnandhiscar_7_th.jpg (9768 bytes)

Uncle John beside his car in July of 1962, just eight months before he died. All of his nephews and nieces loved him and looked forward to his visits.

I speak with them on the phone and they tell me... John looks slender in this picture. I am sure the best meals he ate were in the homes of his sisters. There were many miles between them, in his old car...
