The modern reenactor unit; Company A, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was organized in Atlanta, GA, in January 1984. There were originally five members. Most were transplanted northerners looking to do a quality full-time federal impression. Jeff Mosser was given the task of researching a unit identity. The group wanted to represent a unit which had fought/campaigned in the physical locale where the members were located; namely Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. It was also desired to portray a regiment with a good unit history and a prominent moment in history. Participation at the Battles of Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea, and the Campaign through the Carolinas was a must. Ohio was chosen as the state to represent as this was a region that most of the members could identify with well. Jeff turned to the Army War College in Carlisle, PA, where he had done research for many years and had good contacts with their research staff. The 21st Ohio was finally chosen because it met the requirements of the reenactors and it had a long service, therefore, affording the ability to portray the unit at more reenactments and living history programs. Company A has participated in most of the major reenactments since it's inception: 125th, 130th, and 135th Gettysburg (PA); 125th Wilson's Creek (MO); nearly all Battles of Olustee (FL) since 1984; 130th Cedar Creek (VA); 130th and 140th Bentonville (NC), 130th Wilderness (VA), and the 135th Chickamauga to name just a few. Members of Company A have supported several movies, such as "North and South", "Glory", "Gettysburg", "Andersonville", "The Hunley", and the made for TV movie "The Last Confederate Widow Tells All". Company A has a long and proud history of supporting numerous National Park Service sites throughout the Southeast, by both participating in NPS developed programs and by developing their own programs and presenting them on behalf of the National Park Service. These include Stone's River National Battlefield, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, Fort Pulaski National Monument, and Andersonville National Historic Site. All are sites (except Fort Pulaski) where the original men of the 21st OVI fought or were imprisoned. Additionally, the group supports numerous schools and various Georgia State Historic Sites such as Picket's Mill and Fort McAllister State Parks. Quite possibly the most intriguing "engagement" the reenactors have had was the honor to march in the 2005 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington DC in January 2005. Many of the unit's members, as well as invited associates from Company E, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the various National Parks the reenacting group support, were excited and proud to have participated in that momentous event. It was certainly one that is unique in the reenacting hobby. As we move further into the 21st Century, the members of Company A look forward to continuing our proud heritage of honoring the men that fought to hold this Nation together during the American Civil War.
