EASTER

Reverend Donald O'Keefe

Posted: March 2008

It is an awesome and wonderful day meant to memorialize the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Thank God, our Savior lives!!!

The significance of his resurrection escapes many people. They do not understand what it means. They fail to grasp the immense importance of this event.

Easter is not about bunnies, candy, colored eggs, parades, or new clothes. Easter is far, far more important than such mundane trivial matters. Easter is about deliverance from death and hell. Easter is about the hope of everlasting life in heaven.

Let me explain what Easter really is and why we celebrate that day. It is about God conceiving a son to serve as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. It is about the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, a death suffered out of love for you and I. At Calvary Jesus paid the price for our sins. He bore the penalty for our transgressions.

When he died the battle was not over. At Calvary Jesus paid for my crimes, but one thing more was needed to bring complete victory and deliverance. He must conquer the devil's power over the souls of men through death and hell. Jesus must conquer the power of the grave.

After his crucifixion he was buried in a rock tomb. The tomb was sealed and a guard was set. All of heaven's angels, the saints of old, yes, even the demons of hell were held in anxious suspense as they waited and watched. Will Jesus win? Will he conquer the grave?

I don't know the minute or the hour, but at some moment early on a Sunday, Jesus rose up from the grave as victor over death and hell. He lives! He lives! Angels danced in Glory Land. Demons screamed in anguish and defeat. The chains of death were broken. And all of this was done for whosoever might believe.
See John 3:16.

You see, he conquered the grave to deliver you from its hold on you. Easter is about celebrating our hope of everlasting life, a hope made possible by the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And Easter is about having a living Savior available to me in prayer.
