WOMENS' COMMUNITY DRUMMERS
WITH BUFFY STE. MARIE
Two years ago, I had the pleasure of drumming at Toronto's Native Canadian Friendship Center with the Women's Community Drummers for nominees of the Native American Music awards. I would like to say Miigwetch to Baapenoo Kwe (Shandra Spears), for this opportunity.
It was during this drumming that Buffy Sainte Marie surprised us with a visit. Even though we had been instructed to only play ONE song - we were allowed to sing THREE. We were so delighted to be playing for her, that none of us had the prescence of mind to turn on a tape recorder.
Afterwards, Buffy spoke with us individually. I waited awhile, then approached and chatted with her. I shared with her that I am a First Nations Grandmother living with AIDS. I told her how I appreciated all she has done for us as First Nations People - of how she has always been a role model for me. I thanked her for her care and compassion towards those of us living with HIV/AIDS and for her wise words. She autographed my choice of posters for me. This Poster, and the words below hold a very special place in my heart and my home!

"LIFE is our most sacred gift from the Creator. As the First Peoples
of this land, it is our obligation to protect and cherish that life
for the sake of our children, our communities and the future
of our peoples. One of the most important steps that we must
take to preserve our lives and the lives of others is to inform
ourselves and our communities about the dangers of HIV and AIDS.
This disease is perhaps the greatest threat to our efforts to reclaim our
place as sovereign peoples and to make our invaluable contributions to
the future of humankind. This is my personal plea to you to be informed
as to protect yourself, your loved ones and your communities from HIV and
AIDS. Our future is so bright and rich with possibilities...
let's be there to see it, together."
