Having a predisposition to elevated blood pressure, coupled with a stressful profession as an ATC Flight Service Specialist with Transport Canada, my BP was WAY up there. 195/95 for about 20 years of my adult life. Every annual medical checkup ended with " We should look into your BP soon". I finally confronted the MD, as he was completing the required forms for my employer, "Lets look into it NOW!"
A cardiologist the following day chastised me for not seeing him 25 years earlier! I was put on an ace inhibitor which I couldn't tolerate beyond one pill, then switched to a Beta blocker 'atenolol' 50mg Tenormin (tm).. My cardiologist left town shortly there-after and I regulated my BP with a personal monitor daily, settling on 25mg in the morning and 12.5 mg in the evening. This served me well for the next 10 years. My BP ranged at 145/80, pulse of 58, which was still above the upper limit of normal, but much better than 200/110 pulse 90 at the time of my first visit to the cardiologist.

After retirement, some weight gain, and not having a family doctor for 7 years, I noticed my BP on the rise once again. I was prescribed a "water pill" , a thiazidide, ? along with maintaining my Tenormin regemin now increased to 25mg morning 25mg evening, daily. This brought things back to acceptable levels once again.
Further research uncovered a study from Great Britain that the combinition of Atenolol and hydrochlothiazide had shown that mortality after the FIRST heart attack was much higher in patients using that combination of drugs.
I dropped the "water pill like a hot potato".
Within the past year or so, the medical profession lowered the bar as NORMAL BP from 140/80 to 130/75. I wanted to acheive this level and my doctor prescribed Lipitor, a statin drug.
At 20mg dosage daily, within 4 days, I felt like I had just been through an episode of "Survivor". I ached in muscle and joints, my mind unable to stay focused, my sleep was turbulent to say the least. I cut back to 10mg and began to do some research!

I fear that time will show that dementia will be prevalant in our ageing population if the use of statins continues unabated.
