FEBRUARY 24, 2008 -- It was a long, winding road for the Washington &
Jefferson College Ice Hockey team this season. A year of new faces,
nail-biting games, and dedicated effort from all. W&J ended last season
with a tough loss to Duquesne in the CHMA Finals, a feeling that none of
the Presidents wanted to experience again. The Presidents redeemed that
loss with a win over Duquesne last night but sought more today. The
Presidents achieved their coveted CHMA Title today with a victory over
#14 ranked, and previously CHMA undefeated, West Virginia (14-0-0).
W&J's
Craig Frey
and WVU's J.L. Feely took home co-honors for
being named the CHMA League Tournament MVP.
The thrilling 5-3 victory
was deemed an instant classic by all who were in attendance. A mentally
and physically exhausting game provided a full highlight reel that any
hockey fan would admire and appreciate.
On this day, W&J once
again struck gold first, 5:18 remaining in the opening frame, with a
timely goal from
Matt Chapman. The play began as
Chad Talotta
dumped the puck deep to get a change. However, Chapman hustled into the
zone and was quick to pounce on a loose puck that caromed in front of
the WVU net. Chapman promptly buried the biscuit past WVU goaltender
Ratislav Kret for the 1-0 W&J lead.

the CHMA Championship versus West Virginia. |
 |
Dave Bean, Craig
Frey, & Mario Panucci display the banner following their CHMA
Championship victory over West Virginia on Feb. 24, 2008. |
Ryne Savisky,
"Mr. Consistency", scored his 50th goal as a President and spotted W&J an important two goal lead with 2:37 left in the
period. Savisky deflected home an initial shot on goal by
Clint Lang
with credit to
Chad Talotta for the assist on the setup.
W&J's
Mario Panucci
struck big just ten seconds later, on a breakaway with WVU defenseman draped on him. Panucci
picked up the loose puck and was off to the races. Credit to
Clint Lang with a pass from
Mike Guthrie, who started the play in effort to chip it out of the
neutral zone. On the play, Panucci skated in, faked to the
backhand, and roofed the puck top shelf on the forehand past Kret and
hit twine for a 3-0 W&J lead.
 |
Freshman
speedster Brian Doak had a great weekend & looked to add one
versus the Mountaineers. |
W&J struggled this
season putting WVU away, as in their earlier two losses to WVU this
season, W&J squandered away two 3-0 leads in defeat. WVU started the
comeback early in the second period as J.L. Feeley worked his magic, as
he did all tournament. Feeley struck with assists from Kenny Lehmann and
Brendon Hogan to cut the lead to 3-1.
 |
2/3 of the
Parkway Line: Ryne Savisky & Mario Panucci looking for another
goal. |
The game wore on and
several penalties disrupted play. W&J managed to maintain the lead,
despite finding themselves on the two man disadvantage and on the wrong
side of two 5 minute major penalties. Enough can't be said about the
complete team game.
Brian Doak played today despite suffering a
separated shoulder while gifted grinders
Jeff Rich and
Mike Ellis skated tough all day, frustrating the Mountaineers.
Bo Gezzer and
Zach Stryffeler were essential for the penalty
killing and power play units.
W&J lost
Jim Pasquine to a 2 and 10 minute misconduct but he later returned with
a vengeance and skated tough throughout the rest of the contest.
The combo of
Aaron Siegel and
Dan Ford anchored the defense with their stay at
home approach along with some great plays to keep the zone on the
offensive end. Defenseman
Dave Bean
played his most solid game of the season, making some key breakout
passes and helped shut down the potent WVU offense having made some excellent plays down the stretch in
front of goaltender
John Mioduszewski.
The period seemed as if
it would end with the score still remaining at 3-1. However,
Clint Lang capitalized on the power play for W&J with just 1:15 remaining
in the second period. Lang ripped a shot from the point after
Ryne Savisky and
Mike Guthrie set up the play in typical form and
gave W&J a 4-1 lead at the end of two.

Hockey Mid-American Champions |
West Virginia found
themselves deep in the hole but there was a reason why this team was
undefeated in league play this season and they proved it in the third.
The Mountaineers came out skating like a different team in the third
frame and it was J.L. Feeley who scored short-handed with a slick move
to the backhand that sneaked its way through W&J goaltender
John Mioduszewski's five hole to cut the W&J lead in half at 4-2.
The game wore on and
WVU caught W&J's defense sleeping with 5:12 to go with a cross-ice tape
to tape pass from J.L. Feeley to Brent Hart, who one-touched the pass
nicely into the W&J net to send the fans into a frenzy (credit to
WVU's Jeff Poweski with an assist). W&J's lead had
quickly dissipated to 4-3 and had to dig down deep to hold on.
Goaltender
John Mioduszewski buckled in for what seemed to be a marathon ride and
made a huge stop with just over 3:00 to play with a point blank shot by
a Mountaineer forward in the slot. WVU would not quit and found
themselves with Kret pulled and a chance to tie it up. However, as they
have all season long, W&J found a way to win and it was senior
Craig Frey, who suitably sealed the game, as he took a lead pass from
Mario Panucci and promptly buried it into the empty cage for the 5-3
Washington & Jefferson victory.
 |
Jim Pasquine,
Eric Sweeney, & Zach Stryffeler power their way through WVU during
their first shift of the CHMA Championship game. |
 |
W&J's Eric
Sweeney (15) crashes the net as Jim Pasquine (21) and Dave Bean
(6) look on. |
Message from the
writer: It has been an honor writing for the team yet again this
year. It's been a great experience getting to know the team and all of
the fans. I'm glad to know that my efforts with the team are appreciated
by all. It was great to see this team accomplish a goal that they set
out for nearly a year ago at this time. Congratulations to the
Presidents for bringing home the CHMA League Title! Already looking
forward to next season. See you all at the banquet. -Justin

CHMA TITLE |
'1 MORE!' |
PRESIDENTS ADVANCE TO
FINALS -- DEFEAT DUKES; WVU AWAITS |
FEBRUARY 23, 2008 -- W&J's senior class didn't want their hockey to end
just yet as they dug down and put forth a huge effort tonight at the Ice
Zone versus Duquesne. Mr. Cub's and the W&J faithfuls' motto of "Let's
play two!" rang louder after
tonight's game and has since been modified to "1 More". One more game in
the 2007-2008 Season for the Washington & Jefferson Presidents
(21-12-1): the West Virginia Mountaineers.
The Seniors started it off, then some help from a freshman goaltender
and freshmen forwards, mixed together with a dose of the Parkway Line,
and the solution was about as good as it could get. W&J's 7-5 victory
over Duquesne sends W&J to the CHMA Finals for the second year in a row,
as the win was sweet redemption for the Presidents, following
last year's CHMA final loss to Duquesne.
Craig Frey's
4 point
night led the way while
Ryne Savisky
added a goal and 2 assists.
Brian Doak
skated at another level tonight and scored the game
winner.
Mike Guthrie
scored two power play goals, both of which
were momentum boosters.
John Mioduszewski
turned aside 28 of 30
in the final two frames for the win.
Just 20 seconds in,
senior
Craig Frey kicked off the scoring to give W&J an early 1-0
lead as he rebounded a
Bo Gezzer initial shot on goal (with
credit to
Aaron Siegel picking up a helper to get the play
started). The Dukes' Si Bishop (assisted by Millard/Heath) answered back
for Duquesne just three minutes later to notch it up at one. Clearly
this was just a preview of what the rest of this game had to offer. The
Dukes' leading scorer, Holt Hair, scored just two minutes after Bishop
to spot Duquesne a 2-1 lead.
At 8:56,
Jim Pasquine answered, short-handed, as he took a lead pass from
Craig Frey, skated along the right side, and sneaked one five-hole,
on a semi-break, past
Duquesne goalie Brian Adamczak to notch it at two. However, Holt Hair
answered again and gave Duquesne a one goal lead yet again after he took a
pass from Mike Heath and promptly put it into the back of the W&J net.
The goal gave some momentum to Duquesne as they headed into the first
intermission with a 3-2 advantage. W&J goaltender
Jed Michael faced
several first period shots stopping 12 of 15.
 |
Jim Pasquine scores shorthanded to tie the game at two versus
Duquesne in the Semi-Finals of the 2007-2008 College Hockey
Mid-America Playoffs. |
W&J came out quick in
the second [period] and at 16:21
Mike Guthrie ripped a shot from
the point after a power play setup from
Ryne Savisky. The goal
re-energized the W&J bench and brought the crowd to its feet.
 |
Ryne Savisky (left), Craig Frey (middle), & Jim Pasquine (right)
celebrate just after Mike Guthrie's (not pictured) power play goal
that tied it at three at the CHMA Semi-Finals on Saturday night. |
John Mioduszewski,
who replaced Michael at the start of the second period, faced the music
early as well. Duquesne senior, Mike Heath, quickly silenced the W&J
section of the crowd in about 'as fast as you could say Jack Robinson' with
two goals of his own. Heath scored at 15:34 (assisted by Wawrzeniak/Waite)
and 14:30 (assisted by Seifert/Hair) to rally Duquesne and gave the
Dukes the ever-so-important, two goal lead at 5-3. However, this is all
that Mioduszewski would allow as he stopped 28 of 30
Duquesne second and third period shots.
At 13:27 of the second,
Sophomore
Ryne Savisky put on a show with a highlight reel goal
to cut the lead to 5-4. Savisky split a pair of Dukes, turned a defender
inside-out with style, and slipped a low shot past Adamczak. The score
remained the same as the teams battled up and down the ice until the
second intermission.
At 12:58 of the third
period, senior
Mike Guthrie scored his 2nd power play goal of the
night with a shot from the point again to send the W&J crowd to its feet
yet again (following a nice power play setup between
Craig Frey
and
Ryne Savisky. The goal re-established momentum for W&J and
the tide turned yet again. However, this time the momentum was W&J's to
keep.
Tonight, it seemed as
if it simply was
Brian Doak and open ice. The freshman skated
fast, tough, gave fits to the Dukes all night, and scored the clinching and
game winning / shorthanded goal for W&J as he took a lead pass from
Craig Frey.
Frey got rid of the puck just in time along the boards, took a hit, and
sent Doak on his way. Doak went to the backhand and roofed it top shelf
to give Washington & Jefferson a 6-5 lead with just 5:13 remaining in
the game as the crowd erupted.
Just over a minute
later, senior
Dave Bean took a pass from
Mario Panucci and
wristed one from the left side off the glove of Adamaczak and into the
back of the net. The final goal of the night was a true game sealer and
deflated the hopes of a Duquesne comeback.
The win propels the
Presidents into the College Hockey Mid-America finals for the second
year in a row where the Mountaineers of West Virginia await. WVU
finished the CHMA season undefeated at 14-0-0 and defeated SRU tonight
by the score of 7-3.

#18 WASHINGTON
& JEFFERSON vs. OHIO #8 |
PRESIDENTS PREPARE
FOR BOBCATS |
JANUARY
29, 2008 -- Washington & Jefferson (20-10-1) will finish off its regular
season with two games at #8
Ohio University
(18-12-1) on Friday & Saturday (Feb. 1st and 2nd). The #18 Presidents
are looking to make a statement and pull off an upset or two at Bird
Arena in front of the fan faithful, Gang Green. The puck will drop at
7:30 PM for each game.
Western PA
Hockey will be well-represented in this game, obviously for W&J but for
Ohio as well. Ohio has several players with Pittsburgh-area connections
from their high school hockey days and should make for an interesting match-up.
OHIO GAME
NOTES... Ohio's potent offense is lead by senior and Keystone Oaks grad,
Jim Fuhs. Fuhs has tallied 15 goals and 22 assists for 37 points on the
season. Jeff Jepson is the Bobcats second leading scorer with 28 points
(9 goals, 19 assists) quickly followed by Montour grad, Dave Fitzgerald
(27 points) and Pine Richlander, Ryan Tessmer (27 points). Goaltender
Paul Marshall has an impressive 2.29 goals against average with 4
shutouts on the season in over 1300 minutes played.

#18 WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON vs. SLIPPERY ROCK #20 |
PRESIDENTS WIN
ANOTHER CLOSE ONE AGAINST THE ROCK |
WARRENDALE, PA -- JANUARY
26, 2008 -- Most will say its tough to defeat a team three times in a
season. However, the Presidents (20-10-1) accomplished that feat versus
#20 ranked Slippery Rock on Friday night by the final of 4-3. In what has always
been a great game to watch, W&J once again got the best of their CHMA
rival. Each time for the past two seasons (5 games total), W&J and
Slippery Rock have battled back and forth with the outcome being
determined by a lone goal. The Presidents' 4-3 win on Friday night gave
them their second consecutive 20 win season.
Slippery Rock forward
Tim Snyder was up to his usual ways, scoring yet another goal for the
Rock to give them an early 1-0 lead. Trailing 1-0 late in the first
period, defenseman
Clint Lang
(4th) snapped a nice wrister from
the point that found its way to twine with 2:50 remaining.
The second period began
slowly but the Presidents had a different idea soon enough. W&J tallied
three in the the second frame for a 3 goal cushion.
Craig Frey
(10th)
has had a hot hand of late and a true goal scorer's goal as he crashed
the net and cleaned up a
Brian Doak shot on goal to give W&J a
2-1 lead.
Chad Talotta (15th) scored for the Parkway Line after
some nice puck distribution between
Ryne Savisky and
Mario Panucci.
The Presidents finished
off the second period flurry with a nice rush up ice with 3:56 to go in
the period.
Craig Frey avoided a defender and just got a way a
nice cross ice pass to a cutting Doak.
Brian Doak (11th)
went to the back hand and put it past the SRU goaltender for the 4-1 W&J
lead.
However, like in every
other game between W&J and SRU, there is no quit in either team. Tim
Snyder scored twice more in the third period for the hat trick to pull
the Rock within a goal at 4-3. The W&J defense buckled down and played
solid in front of Senior goaltender
Jed Michael down the stretch.
Michael made some key saves for the Presidents as he would not let
another goal by him and earned the win for W&J.
The Presidents will
travel to Athens, OH to play
Ohio University for two next weekend
on Feb.
1st and 2nd versus the #8 ACHA ranked Bobcats. |
#18 WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON vs. PENN STATE #2 |
W&J STALLS EARLY,
SUFFERS DEFEAT |
GAME SUMMARY --
JANUARY 24, 2008 -- Washington & Jefferson (19-10-1) found themselves
behind early and often as Penn State's offensive output was simply too
much. Penn State, the #2 ACHA Division 1 ranked team in all the land,
skated tough en route to a 10-3 victory over W&J on Wednesday night. The
Icers rolled out to a 5-0 first period lead with two goals by Bethel
Park native, Tim O'Brien, as they put 22 shots on goal while limiting
Washington & Jefferson to just four.
W&J got a spark early in
the second and looked like a different team. W&J skated well, generated
offensive opportunities, and got two quick goals from
Mario Panucci
(12th - assisted by
Chad Talotta) and
Craig Frey
(8th) to cut
the Icers lead to 5-2. W&J had its chances in this time frame to
capitalize but couldn't finish off some prime opportunities. Before W&J
knew it, Penn State's Matt Schwartz scored a short-hander and a power
play goal in a five minute span to put the game out of reach. W&J
out-shot Penn State 16-11 in the second period.
Craig Frey (9th,
assisted by
Eric Sweeney) would add his second goal of the game in
the third period with a nice wrister in front while Penn State's Luke
Delorenzo notched the hat trick for the Icers.
W&J went 1 for 12 on
the power play while the Icers went 2 for 5. Shots for the game: W&J 30
PENN STATE: 49.
W&J will travel to #20
Slippery Rock on Friday night at the Bladerunner's in Warrendale, PA.
The puck is set to drop at 10:00 PM.
GAME PREVIEW -- JANUARY 22, 2008 --
Washington & Jefferson and
Penn State will face off against one another
on Wednesday night at 8:00 PM @ the Penn State Ice Pavilion in a highly
anticipated rematch from last year's game for the archives. In last
year's contest Chad Talotta lit the lamp twice, tying the game at three.
However, the Icers pulled out the win versus the Presidents by the score
of 4-3 with a late goal by Jaime Zimmel with 20 seconds remaining. The Presidents are once again seeking
an upset as they make a push
towards Nationals.

PRESIDENTS WIN ON
SENIOR NIGHT VS. TERPS AT ICEOPLEX |
GAME SUMMARY -- JANUARY 21, 2008 -- #18 Washington & Jefferson didn't
disappoint the home crowd on senior night as the Presidents dominated
play for the duration. Senior Craig Frey (6,7) scored twice and
added two helpers while fellow senior defenseman Clint Lang added
three assists.
Mario Panucci scored (11) and assisted on two while
Parkway line mate Ryne Savisky assisted on three. Jim Pasquine
scored twice (10,11), including a nice top shelf shot, as he
picked a corner skating in on the right side. Parkway liner, Chad
Talotta, finished off a sick-looking goal (14) by the
Presidents off some tape to tape passing between Savisky and Panucci.
Freshman Bo Gezzer (9) took a nice centering pass from Craig Frey
and buried a wrister that jump started the Presidents offense and the
Presidents off and rolling. Gezzer also added two assists on the night.
Junior Matt Chapman skated well for the Presidents and made a
nice play to set up Frey's 2nd goal of the game.
Senior goaltender
Jed Michael got the start and picked up the win in net for W&J,
stopping 11 of 12 Maryland shots on goal.
The Presidents will
have to buckle down as they face their toughest test of the season as
they travel to #2 Penn State on Wednesday, January 23 for what is W&J's
biggest game of the season.
GAME PREVEIW -- JANUARY 19, 2008 -- Washington & Jefferson will honor
its senior class at the Iceoplex at Southpointe in the Presidents' home
season finale versus Maryland on Sunday (1/20) at 1:20 PM.
This year's senior class:
Dave Bean, Craig Frey, Mike Guthrie, Jed Michael,
& Clint Lang have been an integral part of the program's success

exceptional hockey players, model teammates, great students, and leaders
by example. They have proven to portray their leadership (both on and
off the ice) and will undoubtedly continue their success post-graduation
from Washington & Jefferson College.

WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON SWEEPS BUFFALO |
JANUARY 12, 2008 -- W&J won its 13th game in a row but had to battle for
a victory on this night as they picked up a 2-1 win over visiting
Buffalo on Saturday evening at the Iceoplex at Southpointe.
After a scoreless first period, Dave Bean (6) scored from the
point on the power play for the Presidents at 15:14 of the second period
for a 1-0 lead off assists from Ryne Savisky and Clint Lang.
However, Buffalo answered 7 minutes later on a goal by Chris Kokkinis
and tied that game at one at the end of two periods of play.
At 11:09 of the third,
Buffalo was whistled for a tripping penalty. W&J went on the power play
and didn't disappoint. Goaltender John Mioduszewski spotted
forward Jim Pasquine open. Pasquine (8th) took the pass,
skated down the left side around a defenseman, and scored over the
shoulder of Buffalo goaltender Chris Holtz. The Presidents held on down
the stretch for the 2-1 final and picked up lucky win #13.
W&J goaltender, John
Mioduszewski
(17-3-0), continued his hot play of late and only
allowed one goal for the second consecutive night. |
WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON vs. BUFFALO |
WIN STREAK CONTINUES
AS PRESIDENTS ROLL IN WIN |
JANUARY 11, 2008 -
ICEOPLEX AT SOUTHPOINTE -- The Presidents (17-8-1) rolled in sync from
the start, not missing a beat, en route to their 12th consecutive win on
Friday night versus Buffalo by the score of 5-1.
W&J once again had an
extra step on this night, creating several offensive rushes that lead to
multiple scoring opportunities early and often. Brian Doak lit
the red lamp twice (8,9) and added an assist while Bo Gezzer
(8), Mario Panucci (10), and Eric Sweeney (2) added
single goals for the Presidents. Forward Jim Pasquine picked up
another multi-point night with 2 assists.
Bo Gezzer dented
the scoreboard first at 13:39, with a wrister, after Craig Frey
and
Brian Doak worked the magic to set up the play. The first period
continued as W&J had several chances to score but Buffalo goaltender
Patrick Jones stood equal to the task. However at 13:17 of the second
period, Mario Panucci scored his 10th of the year on a back
hander, following a nice face-off win/pass from Parkway Linemate
Ryne Savisky.
W&J continued to press
and freshman Eric Sweeney scored from the slot after a nice
centering pass from Jim Pasquine and helper from Mike Guthrie.
Brian Doak struck gold after another helper from Jim Pasquine
and setup pass from Dave "Don't call me Mr." Bean that gave the
Presidents a convincing 4-0 lead at the end of two. That wasn't the last
time we heard from Brian Doak on this night, as he was soon back
for a second helping. Doak scored at 7:31 of the third on a nifty
short-handed, breakaway goal that fooled goaltender Jones, and brought a
nice ovation from the home crowd of the Iceoplex.
Goaltender John
Mioduszewski (16-3-0) is only a freshman but his play can be
described as a well-seasoned veteran. Once again, he and the W&J defense
were up to their old tricks and stifled the Buffalo offense for most of
the night. "Mio" was on yet again and stopped 26 of 27 shots on goal to
pick up his 16th win in the process. W&J finished the game with 37 shots
on goal.
W&J and Buffalo will
take Part II tomorrow (1/12/08) at the Iceoplex at Southpointe. The puck
will drop at aproximately 4:20 PM. |

JANUARY 9, 2008 --
ICEOPLEX AT SOUTHPOINTE -- Washington & Jefferson, ranked #18 in the
ACHA Division I polls and 16-8-1 overall record, picked up its 11th win
in a row with a solid victory over IUP on Wednesday night by the score
of 9-1. Mario Panucci (8,9) scored twice and added an assist
while
Ryne Savisky and Craig Frey each dished out three assists.
Meanwhile, several other Presidents picked up multi-point games. Chad
Talotta (13) scored and added an assist while Bo Gezzer (7),
Matt Chapman (4), and Jeff Rich (3) equaled the task.
Mike Guthrie (7), Zach Stryffeler (4), and Brian Doak (7)
each added singles for the Presidents to complete the scoring. Jim
Pasquine picked up a two point night with two helpers and some nice
work on the power play.
W&J was simply too much
for IUP and it showed greatly in the first period as W&J stormed out to
a 6-0 lead. W&J's special teams has been hot as of late and it showed as
it scored 4 power play goals tonight. Less than four minutes into the
game, Chad Talotta began the scoring with a nice shot from the
slot after setup passes from Craig Frey and Ryne Savisky.
Just four minutes later, Matt Chapman found twine after a nice
centering pass from Mike Ellis after a nice combo with line mate
Jeff Rich, who began the play.
With just under six
minutes to go in the first, W&J found themselves shorthanded as Mario
Panucci stole an IUP breakout pass. Panucci skated in on the break
and slipped it five-hole for the 3-0 President lead. Bo Gezzer answered
just 49 seconds later after some crisp passing between Mario Panucci
and Jim Pasquine.
With 3:23 remaining in
the first, Jeff Rich spotted W&J a 5-0 lead with a nice roofing
shot from the slot after Matt Chapman and Dave Bean worked
the magic from down low behind the IUP net. Zach Stryffeler
capped the first period scoring on the power play with just under a
minute to go after some nice work from Jim Pasquine and Craig
Frey to give the Presidents a 6-0 lead at the end of one.
Freshman Brian Doak
used his speed as he entered the IUP zone and scored his 7th of the
season with 12 minutes to play in the second period off a nice breakout
between Bo Gezzer and Craig Frey, yet again.
Mike Guthrie
scored on the power play with 1:12 to go in the second period off setups
from Ryne Savisky and Dave Bean.
Mario Panucci
finished off the W&J scoring with his second of the night as he scored
from in front after some slick puck movement between Parkway Linemates
Ryne Savisky and Chad Talotta.
Goaltender John
Mioduszewski stopped all 19 shots that he faced in the first two
periods while Senior goaltender Jed Michael stopped 8 of 9 in the
third period. |

W&J EDGES SLIPPERY
ROCK 7-6 |
HATS ON THE ICE FOR
SAVISKY AS THE PRESIDENTS ROLL PAST THE ROCK |
DECEMBER
5, 2007 -- ICEOPLEX AT SOUTHPOINTE -- W&J stormed to its 8th win in a
row in a 7-6, high scoring affair against CHMA foe Slippery Rock on
Wednesday night.
Slippery Rock took an early 1-0 lead at 11:00 as Derek Rusbarsky scored
his first of three on the night with some fine passing between linemates
Tim Snyder and Wes Waldschmidt. With 6:24 remaining in the first,
Chad Talotta (11) had different ideas as he struck back from the
left side with a power play goal for the Presidents off setup passing
between Dave Crockett and Ryne Savisky. W&J scored again
just two minutes later as Dave "Don't call me Mr." Bean (5)
scored on a nice shot from the point with credits to Brian Doak
and Mario Panucci, who were able to control the puck down low to
setup the goal. SRU answered back with a late goal with just 26 seconds
remaining in the first as Mike Conti hit twine to tie it at two at the
end of the first period off a nice pass by SRU's Shane Smith.
The Rock took a 3-2
lead early in the second as Justin Summerville snapped a nice shot off
another nice feed from Shane Smith. W&J's Mike Ellis (3) answered
at 12:20 with a high wrister that beat SRU goaltender Shawn Ketterer
over the shoulder. On the play, Dave Bean and Jeff Rich
worked the puck down low. Rich fed the puck in front and Ellis promptly
buried it to tie it at three. |
Derek
Rusbarsky picked up his second of the game just 45 seconds after the Ellis
goal to re-establish the SRU one goal lead as Snyder and Waldschmidt
picked up the helpers once again. However, the back and forth game
continued and Ryne Savisky (13) scored on the power play after a
setup between Dave Crockett and Mike Guthrie.
With 4:25
remaining in the second, Bo Gezzer (5) gave W&J its first lead from
in front after a centering pass by Zach Stryffeler from behind the
SRU net to make the score 5-4. However, SRU was quick to strike back yet
again as Derek Rusbarsky completed the hat trick after a third assist from
Tim Snyder and tied the game at 5-5 at the end of two.
With a
game that went back and forth the entire night, W&J didn't want to
disappoint for it was its turn to score and respond to the late second
period SRU goal. The Parkway Line promptly did that early in the
third as Ryne Savisky (14) connected for his second of the night
after some crisp passing between Mario Panucci and Chad Talotta
that gave W&J a 6-5 lead with 18 minutes remaining.
Goaltender John Mioduszewski played as about a solid third period
as you can ask, stopping 24 of 25 third period SRU shots. Mioduszewski
stopped 42 of 48 on the night.
With
11:39 left in the game, Ryne Savisky (15) notched the HT with a
slapper from the side after a pass from defenseman Clint Lang. SRU
responded yet again with a goal from Ryan Deloplaine with 8:12 to go but
could not pull any closer. SRU had a late chance with 1:30 to tie with the
man advantage and a face off deep in the W&J zone. However, SRU chose not
to pull goaltender Shawn Ketterer until there were 30 seconds remaining
and W&J pulled out the 7-6 victory and improved to 13-8-1 overall.
W&J WINS AT JOHN
CARROLL 4-2 |
DECEMBER
1, 2007 -- GATES MILLS, OH -- W&J picked up another College Hockey
Mid-America league win as the Presidents defeated the hosting Streaks of
John Carroll by the score of 4-2.
W&J started the scoring on
the power play as Mike Guthrie (5) scored from the point with a
low shot off a setup between Ryne Savisky and Mario Panucci.
John Carroll would tie the game at one after a 5 on 3 goal by Ryan
Atkinson after a nice pass by JCU leading scorer Nick Morici.
Midway through the
second period, Dave Crockett (15) gave the Presidents a 2-1 lead
after a nice centering pass from Craig Frey. Brian Doak
began the play with a nice feed to Frey. Frey spotted Crockett and he
quickly deposited it into the back of the net, low stick-side past JCU
goaltender, Nick Fabrizio. |
Just four
minutes later, Craig Frey (4) gave W&J a 3-1 lead just on the power
play after a turnover by John Carroll. With just 8 minutes remaining,
Ryne Savisky (12) took a lead pass from Chad Talotta. Savisky
skated into the JCU zone with 8 minutes to go and lit the lamp with a slap
shot from the top of the right circle, lasering it past Fabrizio for the
4-1 W&J lead. John Carroll's Zack Skook added a late goal for the Streaks
but it would be for not as W&J held on for the 4-2 victory.
John
Mioduszewski stopped 29 of 31 John Carroll shots on goal to preserve
the win for Washington & Jefferson.
W&J CRUISES TO 7-3
WIN AT DUQUESNE |
NOVEMBER 17, 2007 -- ICE
CASTLE CASTLE SHANNON -- W&J (11-8-1 and ranked #17 in the latest ACHA
Division I rankings) jumped out to an early lead and didn't look back as
the Presidents prevailed over the hosting Duquesne Ice Dukes #23 by the
score of 7-3 tonight at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.
Mike Guthrie (4)
kicked things off with a nice goal from the slot after a nice feed from
Dave Crockett. Duquesne quickly tied it up at 1-1 but W&J
returned the favor. Ryne Savisky (11) deflected home a Clint
Lang shot from the point after some good puck movement between Lang
and Mario Panucci.
Not much later,
Mario Panucci (7) struck for a shorthanded goal with a nice slapper
from the right side that found its way over Duquesne goaltender Matt
Vaughan's shoulder for the 3-1 W&J lead. Duquesne added a goal to pull
within one but Chad Talotta (10) scored on the power play with a
lot shot along the ice after a setup from Jim Pasquine. Duquesne
answered again to cut the lead to 4-3 but it would be for the last time
as W&J goaltender John Mioduszewski stood tall in net for W&J,
including a Hasek-like sprawling save late in the second period. |
Despite
being shorthanded more often throughout the game, W&J still found a way to
extend its lead. Jim Pasquine (7) scored in the third on the power
play off some playmaking between Ryne Savisky and Mike Guthrie.
Craig Frey gave W&J a 6-3 lead off another nice centering pass from Dave
Crockett. Dave Crockett (14) capped the scoring as Craig Frey
returned the favor with an assist on a 2-1.
WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON DEFEATS RMU AT THE SHOWCASE |
NOVEMBER 16, 2007 --
Washington & Jefferson #17 and RMU #19 battled in what was a defensively
minded game at Mellon Arena on Friday night at the Pittsburgh College
Hockey Showcase. Once again, it was the Presidents who prevailed with a
3-2 victory.
Dave Crockett
(13) scored the game's opening goal with a slick backhander that
found its way over RMU goaltender Jon Hoffman's shoulder for the early
1-0 W&J lead. W&J took a 2-0 lead as Brian Doak (6) took a
centering pass from Dave Crockett and Doak slipped it past
Hoffman for the 2-0 President advantage.
They say a two goal
lead is the hardest lead to keep and RMU proved that as Chris Campell
scored for the Colonials to cut the W&J lead in half. The teams stifled
one another on this night with most of the play found in the neutral
zone. The W&J defense played well as Mike Guthrie, Clint Lang,
Aaron Siegel, and Dave Bean helped limit the Colonials to
25 shots on goal for the night in front of goaltender John
Mioduszewski.
However, the Colonials
completed the comeback as Jacob Javitt scored to notch the game at two
late in the third period. Soon after the RMU goal, the Colonials were
whistled for a penalty, and the Presidents made them pay. Ryne
Savisky (10) tallied a one timer from the left side after another
great centering play by Dave Crockett.
John Mioduszewski
stopped 23 of 25 to earn the win. The win gave the Presidents their 5th
in a row and 6th out of their last 7. |

(6), and Matt Chapman (3) each scored a goal to sweep the
Wildcats this weekend. Mike Ellis added two assists on the night.

JEFFERSON 6 - KENT STATE 2 |
#18 W&J LOOKS
IMPRESSIVE IN WIN OVER #12 KENT STATE |
NOVEMBER 8, 2007 --
Washington & Jefferson entered the rink determined for a win versus what
has become a big rivalry between the Presidents and the Golden Flashes
of Kent State. W&J stormed out of the gate early and didn't look back.
Dave Crockett (9)
scored 5 minutes in on the power play with assists from Chad Talotta
and Ryne Savisky and W&J was off and rolling. W&J took a 2-0 lead
with 5 minutes remaining in the first period with another power play
goal by Ryne Savisky (7) off a setup between Clint Lang
and Jim Pasquine.
Chad Talotta (8)
has had a hot hand of late and struck early in the second after two tape
to tape passes out of the W&J zone between Ryne Savisky and
Mario Panucci. Panucci controlled the puck coming out of the W&J
zone and sent a streaking pass to Savisky. Savisky hit Talotta in stride
and Talotta scored with a nice forehand shot on a breakaway for the 3-0
W&J Presidents' lead.
Jim Pasquine
(4) skated tough and it paid dividends. Just three minutes after the
Talotta breakaway goal, Pasquine stole the puck from a Kent State
defenseman, skated in for a break, deked left and scored low on the
forehand of KSU goaltender Craig Mohr.
Clint "Clubber" Lang
(2) spotted W&J a 5-0 lead midway through the second [period] off
some passing between Aaron Siegel and Jim Pasquine.
Pasquine moved the puck to the point to Siegel. Siegel sent a pass from
the point over to Lang. Lang faked out a KSU player and wristed a puck
with eyes through traffic and hit nothing but twine.
W&J finished off its
scoring for the night just 23 seconds into the third period as Ryne
Savisky (8) capped his 4 point night with his 2nd power play goal of
the game.
KSU broke John
Mioduszewski's shutout bid with two goals in the third but it was
Mioduszewski who had the last laugh as the freshman goaltender stopped
19 of 21 on the night as he improved to (4-2-1) on the season.
W&J looks to build some
momentum this weekend at Villanova for two games on November 10th and
November 11.
WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON SLIPS VS. JOHN CARROLL |
NOVEMBER 4, 2007 -- A
night after an impressive showing and victory at Mercyhurst, W&J
couldn't get things going consistently and fell by the score of 5-3
to CHMA opponent, John Carroll University.
W&J got goals from
Ryne Savisky (6), Matt Chapman (1), and freshman Bo
Gezzer (4) but it would be for not as W&J couldn't shake off a
sluggish start in which John Carroll jumped out to a 5-1 lead.
W&J also got two
assists from Mario Panucci while Jeff Rich, Mike Guthrie,
Chad Talotta, & Jim Pasquine picked up assists on the
night. |

WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON WINS BIG AT MERCYHURST |
W&J POWERS PAST
MERCYHURST |
NOVEMBER 3, 2007 -- W&J
was on the road Saturday night as the Presidents traveled to Mercyhurst
College. The Presidents have had a tough test early this season with one
of the toughest schedules in the ACHA. On Saturday night, the Presidents
put together a complete game en route to an impressive 8-4 win in Laker
Land. The
Parkway Line took it to the road and had success all night as
Chad Talotta [4 goals (4,5,6,7) 1 assist], Ryne Savisky
[1 goal (5), 3 assists], and Mario Panucci (5 assists)
tortured the hometown Lakers. Freshman Brian Doak (3,4)
skated tough and scored 2 nice goals. Jim Pasquine (3) added a
nice goal from the slot as he went hard to the net which complemented
some nice checks and big hits that made for a solid game on Big Jimmy's
part.
Chad Talotta's
first came just two minutes into the game off some tape to tape passing
between line mates Mario Panucci and Ryne Savisky. Savisky
took a lead pass from Panucci and in turn fed it across the goal mouth
to a waiting Talotta. However, ACHA leading scorer Matt Warren quickly
responded with a nice roofing wrister that found twine to notch the game
at one. W&J had several opportunities through one period of play but the
score remained the same heading into the intermission.
W&J's Jim Pasquine
scored in the slot off a rebound after an initial setup by Bo Gezzer.
Just after the Pasquine goal, Chad Talotta struck again with a
quick one-time snapshot off tic-tac-toe passing between Mario Panucci
& Ryne Savisky to give W&J a 3-1 lead.
For the second time on
the night, Mercyhurst's Matt Warren answered with a power play goal to
cut the W&J lead in half. With 3:23 remaining in the second Brian
Doak lit the red light with a quick rush up ice to regain the 2 goal
lead for the Presidents.
Freshman goaltender
John Mioduszewski (3-2-1) played solid in net for W&J and
turned aside 22 of 26 shots on goal, and made some impressive stops
early in the game as the Presidents were on the short end of a 5 on 3.
Entering the third
period, Chad Talotta notched the hat trick on the power play
after a setup between Mario Panucci and Mike Guthrie.
Guthrie's initial shot on net was deflected right in front, low along
the ice, and past the Mercyhust goaltender for the 5-2 W&J lead. Chad
Talotta scored his 4th after a slick breakout and puck movement
between Mario Panucci and Ryne Savisky as they entered the
Mercyhurst zone. Savisky spotted Talotta and he quickly swept it into
the Lakers' goal to give W&J a comfortable 6-2 lead.
Ryne Savisky
later added a goal this time the passing was between Mario Panucci
and Chad Talotta as Savisky dunked one in for his 5th of the year
off a 3 on 1 break for the Presidents.
Late third period,
Brian Doak took a lead pass, skated around a defender on the angle,
and backhanded home his second goal of the night and capped the W&J
scoring after a lead pass from Dave Bean with credit to Nick
Masters on the assist. The Lakers added two late goals for the 8-4
final.
Jeff Rich's
intensity showed as he heckled the Lakers most of the night. Meanwhile,
Mike Ellis did the same as he played a gritty game that took the
Lakers off their game.
Washington & Jefferson
returns home on Sunday, November 4th for a game versus John Carroll at
the Iceoplex. The puck drops at 3:50 PM. |
WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON VS. PITT |
MOMENTUM BUILDER? W&J
DEFEATS PITT 4-1 |
OCTOBER 25, 2007 --
Washington & Jefferson skated well and got timely goals en route to an
impressive 4-1 victory over visiting Pitt at the Iceoplex on Wednesday
night in a College Hockey Mid-America league game.
The Presidents started the
game's scoring just three minutes in as Mike Ellis (2)
intercepted an errant Pitt clearing attempt, skated in and roofed a nice
wrister over Pitt goaltender, Ben Levy's, left shoulder.
W&J skated well and
outplayed Pitt throughout the first period but the game remained 1-0.
However, late in the first, W&J got the goal it was looking for as
Mario Panucci (4) intercepted another errant Pitt pass out of the
zone, skated in on a break, deked, and slipped the puck five-hole for
the 2-0 W&J advantage. The goal gave W&J some momentum heading into the
first intermission with a two goal lead.
Early in the second,
Pitt drew a penalty and capitalized as Pitt's Ryan Severyn scored on the
power play after a setup from Graham Cohen to cut the W&J lead in half.
But once again, it was
The Parkway Line that lit the lamp just a minute and a
half later to reclaim the two goal lead. This time it was Ryne
Savisky (4), who scored from the left side, with a quick wrister
that found its way past the short side (blocker side) of Levy. Mario
Panucci began the breakout and moved the puck up along the left side
to Clint Lang. Lang spotted Savisky with a nice lead pass that
sent Savisky on his way for the goal.
Joe Michelucci,
who skated well all night with some hustle plays and good back-checking
efforts, thought he had given W&J another big goal but went unnoticed,
keeping the score 3-1 in favor of W&J.
W&J got the game sealer
with 13 minutes to play as The Parkway Line struck again as
Chad Talotta (3) roofed a backhander into the top right corner for
W&J's fourth goal after some nice puck movement from Savisky and Panucci.
Senior goaltender
Jed Michael nearly played flawlessly stopping 26 of 27 Pitt shots on
goal, including some sprawling saves in the second and third periods to
shut down the Pitt offense.
W&J out shot Pitt 46-27
for the game. |
WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON AT WEST VIRGINIA |
OCTOBER 20, 2007 -- W&J
and WVU battled back and forth all night long in a gritty game between
the two CHMA rivals but it was the Mountaineers who prevailed in this
contest by the score of 6-4. Mario Panucci (2,3) added 2 goals
and an assist while Dave Bean (4)and Bo Gezzer (2) also
lit the lamp for the Presidents. Ryne Savisky and Chad Talotta
were playmakers all night long and resulted in them each picking up 2
assists on both of Panucci's goals.
Just two minutes into the
game, the Presidents dented the scoreboard on the power play as Mario
Panucci scored with a low slapper that beat WVU goaltender Ratislav
Kret. On the play, Chad Talotta moved the puck over to Ryne
Savisky. Savisky drew a defender and made a nice drop pass to
Panucci who deposited it into the back of the net. WVU struck back with
a goal by WVU forward Tony Attanucci who poked one past goaltender Jed
Michael to tie the game at one.
Later in the first,
defenseman Dave Bean scored the Presidents second goal from the
slot after a saucer pass from Panucci and a helper from Savisky to give
W&J a 2-1 lead. With the period seemingly over, WVU struck with just two
seconds remaining to tie the game at 2 at the end of one.
WVU struck early in the
second to take a 3-2 lead and the teams continued to battle back and
forth throughout the second period. Mario Panucci and Dave
Crockett narrowly missed on breakaways and the game remained 3-2 in
favor of WVU.
WVU added a power play
goal early in the third to take a two goal advantage. However, with six
minutes to go in the third, Mario Panucci scored his second of
the night, from down low, after some more puck movement between Chad
Talotta and Ryne Savisky.
Defenseman Mike Guthrie
and freshman forward Brian Doak skated well and played strong
games for the Presidents.
WVU again scored on the
power play with just 3 minutes to go to make the score 5-3. W&J didn't
waver, kept the pressure on, and freshman Bo Gezzer scored with 8
seconds to go in the game to cut the WVU lead to one. However, WVU
gained possession from the draw added an empty netter for the 6-4 final. |

(3) scored with a nice 2 on 1 connection and setup from Mario Panucci

JEFFERSON vs. RHODE ISLAND |
W&J struggled again at
home versus another top notch ACHA team in Rhode Island. W&J has played
through a tough schedule thus far and it got even more tough as they
played host to the #3 Rams.
W&J fell on Friday night
by the score of 5-2 in a competitive game but faltered by the score of
7-1 on Saturday. W&J took the early 1-0 lead as Chad Talotta (2)
scored on a low shot from in front off assists from Jeff Rich and
Mike Guthrie. However, URI struck back twice with goals 20
seconds apart by Peter Ducharme and Kyle Krannich.
Midway through the
second period, Rhode Island then got a timely shorthanded goal from
Stephen Gaffney for a 3-1 Rams lead. W&J answered back with just under a
minute to go in the second, as Dave Crockett (6) scored on the
power play off some nice passing between Dave Bean and Chad
Talotta. The goal gave some momentum to W&J heading into the 2nd
intermission. W&J had some scoring chances early in the third but could
not put one past Rhode Island goaltender Ray Martin. With 8 minutes to
play, Rhode Island's James Gaffney scored and seemingly took the air out
of W&J. W&J tried to pull goaltender Jed Michael with under a minute to
play but it would be for not as Jaryd Coleman added the empty-netter to
seal the Rams' 5-2 victory.
W&J found itself in the
penalty box frequently on Saturday night and never seemed to have the
opportunity to gain any momentum. URI held a 1-0 lead at the end of one
but then notched 3 quick goals in a matter of three minutes early in the
second period. Once again, W&J found themselves in a tight game but
seemingly a few minute lapse cost them on this night. URI's Cory Manley
heckled W&J with 2 goals and an assist on the night. W&J's Mike
Guthrie (2) ended the W&J scoring drought early in the third on the
power play off an effective setup between Mario Panucci & Ryne
Savisky. However, this would be all the Presidents could muster on
offense and URI went on to win with by an impressive 7-1 score. |
#15 WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON AT OAKLAND #6 |
OCTOBER 7, 2007 - The
Presidents (2-3) had a rough weekend as they were swept by Oakland
University, last year's ACHA DI champs. The Presidents couldn't
seemingly get anything started on offense during Friday's game as the
Grizzlies stormed out to a 2-0 lead at the end of one. The Presidents
had a few scoring chances in the second period but Oakland goaltender
Colin Chase stood up to the challenge and was nearly flawless all night,
stopping 32 of 33.
Jim Pasquine
scored W&J's lone goal of the night on the power play off an assist from
defenseman Dave Bean.
W&J had its chances
with the 5 on 3's but couldn't dent the scoreboard. The W&J power play
was 1 for 10 on the night.
On Saturday night, W&J
was able to generate more offense but the outcome was the same as
Oakland prevailed 8-5. The Parkway Line was reunited as Ryne
Savisky
(1 goal .2 assists), Mario Panucci (1 goal, 2 assists) and
Chad Talotta (1 assist) accounted for 7 points on the night. W&J
was able to put three in on the power play on the night but it would be
for not as the Grizzlies offensive out put was enough for the W. W&J
took a big hit on offense as senior Craig Frey was injured and
did not return.
Presidents' goal
scorers were: Ryne Savisky (2), Dave Bean (2), Mario
Panucci (1), Dave Crockett (5), & Jim Pasquine (3).
W&J has a big
opportunity this upcoming Friday and Saturday as they host 4-0 Rhode
Island at the Iceoplex. Game times are 5:50 and 5:20 respectively.

W&J vs. OAKLAND GAME
PREVIEWS |
OCTOBER 5,
2007 - The Presidents will travel to Oakland University to take on last
years' ACHA Division I National Champs.
W&J is 2-1 thus far this
young season with a recent frustrating 4-3 loss to #22 Niagara in what
was an evenly played game.
Dave Crockett has been W&J's consistent goal scorer again so far
this year with a hat trick against Slippery Rock. Meanwhile, Craig
Frey, Ryne Savisky, Mario Panucci have created some
nice plays on offense. It is unknown whether or not freshman Brian
Doak will give it a go tonight, as his speed and skill create plays
almost instantaneously. Jim Pasquine has been a force to be
reckoned with thus far this season with some huge hits and ability to
skate through defenders.
W&J defensemen Clint
Lang, Dave Bean, and Mike Guthrie are playing well
this season and are looking to lead a severely underrated defensive
corps. W&J has benefited from solid goaltending as well with Senior
Jed Michael and freshman John Mioduszewski, who has stepped
right in and played well for the Presidents.
Oakland
(1-1) recently split with Michigan-Dearborn and counters with Brent
Cooper, Steve Picolli, and Jesse Worrell, who have accounted for a good
portion of the Grizzlies goals thus far. However, the Grizzlies have
more than just three goal scorers with another deep roster and
playmakers including Matt Kowalczyk (1 goal and 2 helpers) already this
season. W&J will have to put some pressure on the Oakland defense and
goaltender Chase Colin. Colin has already faced 75 shots in 2 games this
season with 9 goals against. |
WASHINGTON &
JEFFERSON vs. SLIPPERY ROCK |
W&J PICKS UP 4-3 ROAD WIN AT THE ROCK |
SEPTEMBER 29, 2007 -- Everyone
knows that its always going to be a competitive game when W&J and Slippery
Rock compete. What has now become a College Hockey Mid-America rivalry, this
was another match-up that didn't disappoint. However, once again it was the
Presidents who prevailed 4-3 in a nice come from behind victory.
Dave Crockett (2,3,4) notched the hat trick with three nice wristers as
W&J came back from a 3-1 second period defecit. Mike Guthrie (1) put
home the game winner from in front off a nice setup from Ryne Savisky
and Craig Frey. Savisky notched 2 assists on the night and made his
biggest play for last on the nice centering pass to Guthrie with just under
four minutes to play. Frey also picked up 2 assists of his own as the
Presidents picked up a nice early season win.
Goaltender John
Mioduszewski picked up his first win in net for the Presidents,
stopping 30 of 33 Slippery Rock shots on goal. No save bigger than late
in the third, Mioduszewski made a slick glove save from point blank
range to preserve the W&J win.
W&J had some early
opportunities but couldn't solve SRU goaltender Kris Wisniewski.
Mario Panucci raced against the clock at the end of the first with a
breakaway off a nice outlet from Brian Doak but Wisniewski stood
to the challenge and made a nice glove save on Panucci as time expired
to keep the game tied at one at the end of one.
The speed of Doak,
Panucci, and Crockett led to several odd man rushes and several scoring
opportunities. Jeff Rich and Chad Talotta heckled the
Pride all night long. Defenseman Clint "Clubber" Lang played a
strong game and did a nice job of keeping pucks in the zone along with
some nice puck movement.
W&J came out a little
sluggish in the second but Crockett found the back of the net twice in a
5 minute span to give W&J the momentum heading into the third. Jim
Pasquine, who skated through defenders most of the night, had a nice
setup to Crockett and helped to provide a spark that W&J was searching
for.
Mario Panucci
had another opportunity as he stole an errant pass raced in on for his
second breakaway and was hauled down from behind, and got the shot off
but it was Wisniewski who again held strong to keep the Pride in
striking distance. Although, it would not be enough as the Presidents
dug down deep and Guthrie and Savisky provided the drama late as they
hooked up for the game winner.

SEPTEMBER 23, 2007 -- Washington & Jefferson #15 in the ACHA
pre-season ranking polls, returned to the ice for the first time since their
run to Nationals last year and did so in a successful manner, posting a 4-2
victory versus Eastern Michigan on Saturday night. New coaches Jeff
Fenton and John McCarthy were excited to get down to business.
The Presidents were ready too as they shook off a jittery and anxious start
to put together solid second and third periods for the win.
There are several new faces
associated with the Presidents club this season but it was the same result
as the Presidents (1-0) put together a solid outing against the Eagles
(0-2). However, W&J found itself trailing early as Eastern Michigan's Aaron
Peterson lit the lamp with a nice wrister from the left side that found the
upper corner past President goaltender Jed Michael. However, the Presidents
would answer back as Craig Frey (1) put one home on the power play
midway through the first after a nice set up from Dave Crockett and
Cling Lang.
W&J found themselves
shorthanded just a few minutes later but still managed to dent the
scoreboard again. Brian Doak spotted linemate Dave Crockett
(1) on a break. Crockett took the pass, danced around a defender, and picked
a spot for his first goal of the young season to give the Presidents a 2-1
lead.
Eastern Michigan found the
equalizer with under seven minutes to go in the first as Aaron Peterson
picked up his 2nd goal of the game on the power play to tie it at two. This
would be the last time the Eagles would put one up on the scoreboard. Senior
goaltender Jed Michael clamped down and made several huge saves
including many on thee Eastern Michigan 5 on 3's. Michael stopped 27 of 29
shots against on the night along with some nice sprawling saves in the
third.
The Presidents got an early
second period goal and eventual game winner from Chad Talotta (1) on
the power play after some nice back and forth passing from Jim Pasquine
and Mike Guthrie at the points. Talotta found the puck down low and
wristed one low into the back of the net for the 3-2 lead.

(middle) & Mike Ellis (right) celebrate as Talotta sends home the game
winner versus Eastern Michigan in the second period on Saturday night at
the Iceoplex. |
W&J finished off the
scoring just a minute later as Brian Doak (1) picked up his first
goal as a President off some slick passing between linemates Mario
Panucci and Dave Crockett. Crockett moved the puck to Panucci.
Panucci skated the puck deep into the EMU zone and made a slick pass behind
his back to a flying Brian Doak who promptly distributed the puck into the
net past EMU goaltender Erik Schardt.
