The alphabet blocks sat under the Christmas tree. Tomorrow would be Christmas Day. This was their last chance to have a party. A Block Party, so to speak. They were a present for Tommye. Tomorrow, Tommye would play with them, and they would have to do what he wanted them to do. This was their last chance to do what they wanted to do.

The cat was sitting on the back of the chair, eying the satin ornaments on the tree. His tail flicked. The blocks spelled out “M E O W”. The cat ignored them. The blocks spelled out “C H R I S T M A S”. The cat ignored them. The cat sauntered off the chair, and stopped beneath the tree. A red satin ornament was just above his nose. He swatted at it. The blocks spelled out “S T O P”. The cat swatted them aside. He clawed at the red satin ornament until it was a mound of red fluff under the tree, then moved to a gold satin ornament. The blocks huddled together. They spelled “T U N A”. This caught the cat’s attention. The blocks spelling “T U N A” moved slowly toward the kitchen. The cat stalked behind them. The blocks pushed open the swinging door. The cat followed. The blocks quickly retreated. The ‘Q’ block wedged himself against the door, so that the cat could not get out of the kitchen. The remaining blocks returned to their spot underneath the tree. Low ‘mrrow’ noses emanated from the kitchen as they continued their Block Party. They spelled out “SANTA”, AND “NOEL”, and other festive words. Shortly before dawn, the blocks outdid themselves and spelled out “FELIZ NAVIDAD”. With that, they collapsed from exhaustion. And that is where Tommye found them in the morning. (Except, of course, for the ‘Q’ block, which was found next to the kitchen door.)
