Oh Nick was such a funny child, oh so funny indeed, as he did love holidays as much as he did love sweets. On whatever the occasion, any time of the year, Nick was into it, especially the food and comradery. “Grandma was his best friend, as he did spend lots of time with her. But Grandpa, he was Nick’s man, for he was a toymaker, and all-around handy man. Fix a cupboard, repair a shaky chair. Resole boots and a leak pot he could fix.

So Nick grew up in a house full of love and active people. People who cared for others and went out of their way, to spread good cheer.

It was a cold and snowy night, a night was the eve, eve for a holiday when little Nick did appear in the world. The only son of an ageing couple, the only son to Frau and Herr Nicholas, a house frau and a street sweeper who had a love for toys. Into a house of love he came, into a house filled with joy. Into a house which was poor, but rich beyond anyone’s dreams for it was always animated and on-going.

Herr Nicholas did, in his spare time, mend toys and make new ones. Then he would in late December leave them in front of poor childrens' doors. That was what made him happy, that is what he did enjoy, as Frau Nicholas did take all the scraps of cloth and make lots of baby dolls.

Nick grew up with these going on and soon became a part of the cycle. “Nick, see what Klaus does wish,” were his marching orders. “Nick, can you deliver a few presents, for so many this year I have made and help I do need,” his poppa often said.

When Nick did go to school, he was not a very good student, not the whiz with math or science, or history of his nation. But he did do good in geography. And after a few years, he was the best there was. For Nick knew about people, people from throughout the world.

Then one cold December, one cold and snowy night, as he the toys and dolls did deliver a bad accident did happen. A house on the Strausse did as Nick walked by, shed its roof of the deep snow, covering and snuffing Nick’s own life.

But an angel from above who had been this young man been watching, did take his spirit and body in hand and did send him to a foreign land, so no one Nick would know. In the frozen North, Nick was put in with friends, friends and elves galore, who had talent and nothing to do. Nick did meet and wed, a lovely girl, and so they became Mister and Mrs. Nicholas Claus.

Remembering all the fun of giving out presents, Nick was approached by the council and asked, “How can all these elves we keep busy?’

Nick did laugh and smile, as a simple answer he did give. “Let them make toys, dolls and presents, and then let me them distribute as my father did, when I was only a child.”

“But how will the presents be distributed, can we do it world-wide?” came the question from Herr Strapman.

And so it did begin, simple, yet with lots of problems. But over the next hundred years, Old St Nick and Mrs. Claus did become household words.
