Getting to Washington, D.C.

By Air

Washington is served by three airports, Washington National Airport (DCA), Baltimore-Washington International (BWI), and Dulles International Airport (IAD). There is local ground transportation for each of the three airports.

Airport Information

Reagan-Washington National (DCA)

  • Location: Arlington, Virginia
  • Distance from Washington: 6 miles
  • Best bet for getting to the hotel: Take the (free) Marriott Crystal Gateway hotel's shuttle from the airport. Shuttle runs every 15 minutes between 6 AM an 11 PM. Go to baggage claim level, doors 9 or 5. Please be sure you are taking the shuttle to the Marriott Crystal Gateway--there is another Marriott close by with a very similar name.
Baltimore-Washington International (BWI)
  • Location: Anne Arundel County, Maryland

  • Distance from Washington: 32 miles

  • Best bet for getting to the hotel: Take the Metro bus B30 (schedule in .pdf format) from BWI to Greenbelt Metro station. Greenbelt is the end of the Green line, so get on the first departing train. Somewhere between the Mt. Vernon Square station and the L'Enfant Plaza station, you will need to change to the Yellow line (in the direction of Huntington) and get off at Crystal City. The B30 bus ride to Greenbelt takes about half an hour, and the subway portion takes about forty minutes.

Dulles International (IAD)

  • Location: Chantilly, Virginia
  • Distance from Washington: 29 miles
  • Best bet for getting to the hotel: Take the Washington Flyer coach to West Falls Church Metro station. From there, take the Orange line (in the direction of New Carrollton). Change at Rosslyn to the Blue line (in the direction of Franconia/Springfield), get off at Crystal City. The bus ride is about tewnty five minutes, and subway portion takes about half an hour.

Tip: BWI tends to be the cheapest of the three airports but DCA is the most convenient, especially since the Marriott Crystal Gateway has a complimentary shuttle from DCA.

By Train

Washington is the southern terminus of the Northeast Corridor. Trains leave hourly from Boston, stopping in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. Trains also travel from across the United States. The autotrain from Florida also ends in Lorton, Virginia, just outside Washington. More train information can be found on the Amtrak website. To get to the hotel from Union Station, catch the Red line in the direction of Shady Grove. At the Gallery Place/Chinatown station, change to the Yellow line and get off at Crystal City

By Bus

Washington is served by Greyhound Bus service. Though the Washington bus stop is a few blocks from Union Station, we recommend taking a cab from the bus stop to Union Station where you can catch the Metro to Crystal City. Take the Red line in the direction of Shady Grove. At the Gallery Place/Chinatown station, change to the Yellow line and get off at Crystal City.

By Car

Washington is notorious for its traffic. The easiest way, if traveling by car would be to park at the hotel (or contact us for a free, but not convenient alternative) then forget about your car for the weekend except for the trip to Mount Vernon--car pool volunteers will be needed for this trip.
