White Jade Design Int'l

Goodie Bags

A Simple Favor ANYONE Can Do

Think those tulle favors just AREN'T for you? Well then, let's try something new. We didn't see this one in any invitation catalogs or instructions/descriptions on-line anywhere. This one comes from the imagination of the White Jade staff. Sometimes the simple and obvious idea is the best idea. :)

These bags were found at an Iowa City party shop for: 44 cents, 29 cents, and 19 cents. Top was just 15 cents!

Three types of bags work well for this project, depending on your style, budget, preferences, and audience. A handled bag, handleless bag, and a mylar bag. A top like one here makes a cheep but fun filler for a child's goodie bag.

To make this favor you will need:

Small gift bags: 4-6" is the best size for most stuff, but use your best judgement. You can get solid colored ones at most party stores for a very reasonable cost.

White tissue paper: purchase no less than 2 packages if making more than 5 bags.

Colored tissue paper: for variety, get at least two different colors. purchase single color packages for more economy.

Curling ribbon: two spools of different colors minimum. Those 500 yard spools go a long way so even if you go crazy here and have fun, just two should handle most small and medium quantity requirements.

Glitter, confetti, or any other extra touch you like

Minimum 2 lbs. of candy

Votive candles, poupouri, or whatever else you want to put inside.

Scissors

Assembly:

1. Using scissors, cut sheets of white tissue paper into 2-6 sections roughly 6-10 inches in each direction. They don't need to be perfectly square, but you should experiment with the first couple and see what you like best. Since paper sizes vary by company and packaging, you will just need to experiment and use your own common sense. If you buy too much paper you can always use it later for holidays and birthdays.

2. Using two squares of paper layered together, center about 1 tablespoon of candy. 4-5 foil wrapped candies should do the trick if you are using something like Hershey's kisses or related candy. Taking the corners of the paper, gather up and tie about 12-15 inches of curling ribbon around it, forming a close fit. You can also gather up one layer of white, then take a same sized square of colored paper and gather it up from an angle so that both colors alternate colors at the top, then tie secure with the ribbon. Curl the ribbon with scissors and put in your bag one side.

3. Using a slightly smaller square of colored paper, align a larger white square over the smaller, positioning so they form mid angles and you end up with an eight pointed star. Center your votive candle, poupouri, or other goody on the paper. Gather up and tie with a contrasting ribbon. Curl ribbon. Place next to candy in goody bag.

4. Using paper, curled ribbon, glitter, confetti, or whatever other effects desired, fill the remaining space of the bag.

For children's goody bags, try using a non-solid colored bag to contrast with the adult bags. Or take a solid bag and decorate with some stickers. White bags with crayon drawing or with a crayon taped to the front is also a good idea--that way while the adults are having fun doing grown up things, the child can color the bag.

Popular children's favors (definitely better than just candy) include tops, noise makers, crayons, erasable pads, plastic rings, small notebooks, wedding bubbles, erasers, or other fun toys. Most party supply stores have a wide range of fun stuff that keep your children occupied during the reception without getting into trouble.

For children's bags, a larger bag is often required, but if you have the money for something bigger, coloring books, markers, and other school supplies are a real hit!

For adult bags, a book of wooden or paper matches, either plain or with your names/dates on them, are good extras to put in with candles. Or try a candle with candle holder if you have the money! Many discount stores sell glass candle holders for under $1.50 each, some for just 45 cents!

Christmas is a GREAT TIME to get candles if you want to use them in the goodie bags, assuming red, white, and green are acceptable colors! As of fall, 1999, these often run about 25-50 cents US each, instead of 80 cents or more at other times of year. If you can plan ahead, this is a great way to save money!

Thanks for reading this FAQ...have fun making them yourself!
