MissChief Mingles PERCUSSION BOOM BOOM PaTaTa PaTaTa.. You can't keep me quiet, but you can keep me busy...! Anything that makes a noise... give it to me! There are quite a few different things i like to do with percussion; Like djembe, Middle-Eastern rhythms, Latin percussion, Chinese lion dancing... playing with improvised instruments and juggling objects... I followed lessons in darbuka and djembe with Misha Kostava from Georgia and djembe of Alain Anglionin from Martinique. I have been learning some great conga and other percussion from Ruud Souhoka; a real groovy conguero/percussionist from Leiden. Lately I have been working out arrangments of Latin rhythms for drumset and percussion with another great drum teacher. Lucky me! I have played in several formations, playing different styles of music, varying from African percussion and acoustic stuff like flamenco to funk and jazz. I have also been teaching people at different community centres and drug rehabilitation for some time. The accent here isn't achievement in music so much, as more coöperation, concentration, letting go, creative impuls etc. Beneath, I shall lay out some different aspects of themes I have to offer; TRAMMELANT IN TROMMELLAND Fun percussion workshop for kids. In a playful way, children get introduced into the world of rhythm. Using not only drums, bells and shakers, but also sticks, voice and clapping games. At the end of the course the children can do a show together. Our motto is; WHO HAS A HEART, HAS RHYTHM This workshop was running as a 10 lesson course at community centres, but has also been performed as a one-off event on parties. The form of this theme can be adapted to one's wishes, combined with circus, facepaint or other ideas. MONTHLY DRUMCIRCLE, OPEN PERCUSSION JAMSESSION Every first Sunday of the month, starting at 16.00h, we have a free drumming circle in Leiden. People come from all over the country, with all kinds of instruments to jam together. Varying from drumkit, to congas, darbukas, djembé, cymbals, triangles, bells, shakers etc. it is open for all levels, so it is not so much about the quality of the music, but more the fun of everyone being on the same groove together. However, people are asked to help people, if needed, to find the correct rhythm. Everyone is welcome to come and play, dance or just to have a drink. The entrance is free and the event is held at Bar en Boos, Koppenhinksteeg 4, Leiden, NL. We also run an online percussion forum, with info on the drumcircle and percussion in general. For drumcircles in other countries, please visit the drumcircle list. FUN, LOW INTENSITY (TEAMBUILDING) WORKSHOPS With the emphasis on fun, we will play percussion together with a variety of instruments. Especially interesting for companies, but also as a community/neighbourhood activity. People taking part have to listen to eachother and coöperate in order for things to sound good. Possibly, some people will overcome personal barriers. Sure is, that it gives a great deal of fun and people will get to know eachother in a different way. GROUP AND PRIVATE LESSONS FOR BEGINNERS Regular classes for djembe and small percussion in groups (1,5 hrs) and privately (1hr), learning general rhythms from Africa, Asia, Middle East, S-America, funk, basic improvisation and more. At the moment, there are classes running on Thursday evening, from 19.30-21.00 hrs in the Bar en Boos, Leiden. There is room for more people. If interested, feel free to contact me. WORKSHOPS BY VARIOUS MASTER PERCUSSIONISTS We also organise workshops for various high-level percussionists. The instructors are from different backgrounds, like Middle Eastern, Samba, African, Latin.. These workshops are for people who are already familiar with percussion and are more intense. When interested in the above, please contact me. TOETERS EN BELLEN Recently I started playing small percussion in a big brass and percussion street orchestra, called Toeters en Bellen. With an occupation of around 25 people, we play world music, varying from Carribean to klezmer. REPAIRS If your djembe is broken or sounds awful and it needs repairing, check out the Making & Repairing Page. If you still can't figure it out, or you don't feel like the heavy job, i can do it for you! Often after repairing your drum, it sounds and looks like it never did before, just like a new drum! If you have any questions on how to proceed in your project or maybe you wonder how much it'd cost if i'd do it and how long it would take, please don't hesitate to contact me |
