A Witch is a woman, or a man*, who practices a life-affirming, nature-oriented way of life referred to as WitchCraft, the Craft, or Wicca. It empasizes the unity of the natural world and the spiritual powers it possesses.
Witches believe that all living things have a "soul" and spiritual powers, and that the world is composed of a network of spiritual/energy forces. These forces cause rhythmic changes in all life, and one thing being touched in any way effects all things. (See the Nature of Magick section for more information on this.) A Witch is someone who takes these forces/energies and uses them to affect change for the better in themselves, their lives, and the world around them.
I see WitchCraft as somewhat separate from Wicca. Mose use the terms interchangeably to represent the Wiccan Religion; I don't. WitchCraft is the practice/art/science of Magick, whereas Wicca is an ancient religion that includes WitchCraft as part of their practice. You could say that WitchCraft is the science of Wicca (although WitchCraft can be very spiritual in its own right); or that Wicca is the religion of Witches (though not all Witches).
It is said that "Being a Witch is not what you DO, it's who you ARE". To me it's both -- WitchCraft (the doing) is what Witches (who you are) do.
WitchCraft includes, but is by no means only, spellcasting, divination (fortune-telling), herbcraft, meditation, the raising of energy, ritual, clairvoyance, and other psychic abilities.
It is an absolutely wonderful practice with no fear, no hate, and no cowering before the 'God'. Each one of us has the right to enjoy everything this Universe has to provide. Every living entity has the right to live as they please and indulge in what makes them happy and comfortable. WitchCraft and Wicca allow us all exactly that.
It is not without responsibility, however. There are limits to doing what we want and living the way we want. While it's true that a person is made up of what she/he believes in, and that it's not necessary for our beliefs to conform to anyone else's (or theirs to ours), we do have to consider others in what we do. "An it harm NONE, do what thou wilt" (see the Wiccan Rede if you've never heard that Law).
In the Craft there is room for anyone and everyone. There are many different traditions involving many different beliefs. Some Witches practice the Craft strictly within the "magickal" boundaries, and some practice it in a strictly religious form, and still others find a balance between the two.
One thing Witches DO NOT do is "preach" our ways to others. There is no ONE way to follow, no ONE way that is the "right" or "true" way. There are as many different paths as there are people and all are right for those who believe in them. We teach, we guide, we lead, but we don't preach or search out those who are vulnerable and try to convert them. If we draw new people in to the ways of the Ancients, then it is by example that we do so, not by force or coercion.
We are people just like you, just like the guy down the street or the girl across town -- we just practice our own brand of faith.
*= A note about the word "Warlock": The term "Warlock" means "oath-breaker" and is a derogatory term. Male Witches aren't called anything different than female Witches are. A Witch is a Witch whether female or male.
Read the pages here to learn more about Wicca and The Craft, and then find other places (there are many on the net and I have some links to some very wonderful, informative sites for you) that can take you even further into the study if you feel WitchCraft is for you.
